What do you use LOL's for?

I use LOL when I find humor in a post. I like/enjoy the post plus it's funny!

I recently found out that some forum users may use the LOL button as some sort of a sarcastic disagree.
Is this true?

If so ... how come we can't have the agree and disagree buttons back?

I do not want fake LOL's!

Personally I do not care if forum users agree with me or not. I care more about FAKE LOL's

When I disagree I comment and state why. I don't LOL and run away and hide. I think it is rude!

The disagree button was taken away because many forum users thought it was being used as bullying.

I use the LOL two ways. When I find a post funny and when I find a post so ridiculous it's laughable and making a comment would probably get me in trouble.

As far as what people click or don't click for my posts....I don't care. It's a forum and no reason to get angry or upset over what an anonymous poster says.

Yeah, that "disagree" was being put on the most innocuous posts. All you had to do was post about something that happened in the game and you'd practically guaranteed a "disagree".

Personally, I use the LOL when I think something is actually funny and when I know I'm laughing with the poster, not at them.

I've received LOLs on all sorts of odd things, including routine technical advice. Pretty sure they've knocked me up onto the leaderboard sometimes.

I could live without the LOLs. I'd happily use "like" when a post makes me laugh. And I say that because I'm honestly not sure if it's a good thing that since September, I've become immune to the misplaced LOLs and feel nothing. There's a line between a thick skin and an overly thick skin that stops feeling appropriately, and I don't want to ever cross it.

So the dislike button was misused and now the LOL button is being misused. That's fine!

I was just wanting to know what I read was true or not.

    Thanks

I use it on posts I find funny. If someone posts something I disagree with/makes me upset, I either call them out on it if I feel strongly enough or just ignore them. I don't use it as a dislike button.

I use "like" for several reasons. If I liked the ideas put forth in a post, I "like". If someone answers a question for me, I "like" (and try to follow up with a "thank you" post, because it's nice to acknowledge when someone has been nice to you). If I think a post was particularly well-written or presented, I "like". If it's a choice between "like" and "LOL", I tend to go with "like".

If I vehemently disagree with a post, I'll either post a rebuttal or just pass it on by. Usually the latter, because I try to not get involved in internet arguments (waste of energy). Even if the post with which I disagree is well-written, I still won't "like" it because I don't want to give the impression that I agree with it. In that case, I may write why I enjoyed the post but also why I disagree with it. If the post is just basically offensive (and that includes being rude or aggressive to me or to others), I "flag" and move on. Not worth the effort to post (and doesn't give the offender the satisfaction of a reply/bump).

I "LOL" when I genuinely find a post funny. I never use it sarcastically because sarcasm typically doesn't translate well over the internet. This is especially true when communicating with a global audience -- what registers as sarcasm in one culture doesn't necessarily fly in another. Given my "take-all-LOLs-at-face-value" attitude, I always assumed every "LOL" I received was given because I brought a smile to someone's face (ooo that gives me a warm, fuzzy!). Oh dear, were all those LOLs actually mocking me???

ETA: I tend to distribute a lot of "likes". I liken it to spreading a bit of joy :). "Likes" to all the posts above in this thread, for example :).

Almost every time mention that I like TS4 my post gets more LOL's then when I actually post something funny. It is weird but I understand why some people are doing it! They like to be sarcastic and mock people that enjoy the game. Well it's getting old! Just wait ... !!! lol

Isn't that assuming why someone is doing something though? It's not necessarily being either sarcastic or mockingly. Like I said earlier I'll LOL a post if I read something so ridiculous I have to laugh. Having someone say "I like TS4" is not something I'd LOL. Seeing TS4 is the best evah! I'd LOL.

No I am not assuming anything when the comment someone made was not funny but gets lot's of LOL's.

If a post is not funny it should not have LOL's ... just saying! They might as well bring back the dislike button. OR a do not agree button. I have been on other forums and the disagree button is not a problem.

(If it is a fact it is no longer an assumption. Facts that have proven wrong become assumptions.) lol

I agree with the statement that a fact is not an assumption. Please show me that it is a fact that LOLs are used for sarcastic means. If you show me a post that is supposed to be serious and it has a lot of LOLs all you are doing is assuming you know the reason it was done.

I do not have to prove anything to you. The posts are all over this forum. Just open your eyes. By the way .... do you know that you talk in circles? lol

I have to go now (supper/chores)

I am interested in what other have to say!

I'm sorry you're having trouble following me. I'm just using logic. Just a post with a lot of LOLs is not proof of anything except it has a lot of LOLs. It's an assumption. If you would go to each of those people who clicked and ask them why they did it...that would be a different story.

It is no secret that many people are using laughter to mock and insult others :)
So why should it be any different with the LOL button? But it is not a very smart strategy
in my opinion because those who uses the button for that purpose are also rewarding their
target with popularity points :) And in the long run, badges as well!

It's just ridiculous and therefore I couldn't care less.

I use the LOL button myself when someone causes me to laugh out of joy :)

You took the words out of my mouth. If it gets a chuckle from me, it gets an LOL.

Just to add: I'm sure I've clicked an LOL or two when I meant to click "Like." They are very close and when on a phone it's even easier to make the mistake. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it either way.

To the person who LOL'd me: Thank you, thank you please, no applause. *Bows deeply*

As I indicated earlier, it honestly never occurred to me that LOLs could be/would be used to mock, insult or express disdain for others' opinions and viewpoints or used as a way of putting people down. It runs counter to the way I operate. I try to not intentionally insult people, so I'd never use LOL in that way. If I disagree with someone BUT I feel their (faulty) argument is worthy of reply, I'll reply. If the disagreeable poster is not worth the time and effort to reply, then for me, they aren't even worth the time and effort it would take to click LOL.

It boggles my mind that people would use LOL like that (yes, I've been called a pollyanna at times :)). This thread has been an eye-opener and, again, makes me scared of the LOLs I've been granted !

Apparently this is not supposed to bother people because "funny" is different for everyone.

@SimPoseyYum I do the same as you and I guess it's not my business what others do. I am in charge of my own feelings. It to bad that some may abuse the system.

I will only "LOL" a post in a sarcastic fashion if I was very confident the original poster was intending on it.

I almost made a thread about this, because using LOL's in that manner is bullying and harassment and I have said that in the forums a few times. I am an adult.... very adult but I won't give my age and I can let that behavior run off me. There are people that are a little more sensitive right here on the forums.. I've seen teenagers bullied off the forums by this.

    This:
    http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/799015/we-care-supporting-simmers-going-through-hard-times/p165

If you scroll down you will see that @SimGuruDrake says this
"I want to pop in this thread to state that users should not be using the LOL feature to harass other users."

There are people that say they use it for that reason. In my mind the LOL is suppose to be used not to ridicule or mock people but for pleasure... when you made someone laugh. They said something witty or downright funny people laugh.. it's polite.

At this point, this shouldn't be about votes. People are abusing a feature anonymously. It's just not ok, and there's nothing "lol" can do legitimately that can't be done with "like"

They should make the buttons like they were before (not anonymous)! That would keep trolls from LOLing since everyone can see who did it anyway.

I'm sorry that happened to you but yes it doesn't surprise me. I would love to have the LOL feature but yes if people can't "get it", I agree it might as well be taken away.
