how to make money in retail

My employees show up an hour late ( I have 2 ) when I had one employee she would at least stock. Now I can't get any employee to do anything. Half the time I can't even berate my employees because I don't have the option to when they are clearly sitting or talking to each other. My poor some has to do it all!

I don't think I'll be hiring any employees by the sounds of it. I'm doing okay without them!

you need to check your aspiring employees skills before hire them, to me the most important are Ethics and Sales but keep in mind the higher skilled employees cost more

I let my sim run his shoppe all by himself because every employee he has ever hired was totally useless. Now, he just does everything and saves himself from paying wages.

Just like Kojik said, you need to see how high their Work Ethic bar is. Even if it's at medium levels the employees don't seem to work well. I hired one female at medium work ethic and she never rang up a single customer, then I hired one at full ethic and he was much better, also make sure you assign them the task to ring up customers.

I hired one employee that was full-barred (is that even a word lol!) in ringing up customers and one that was proficient in stocking. Neither one did anything, ever. I fired them and hired 2 more. They were just as useless :(

If you have other sims in your household you can also get them to go to work with you. I had a few employees that really didn't anything other than goof off. Once I checked up on them a few times and there was something else (I didn't think that I berated them.. I can't think of what the action actually was off the top of my head right now..) they did pick up their socks and start improving.
