So I'm doing this challenge (will do a full update when I get to the end of the first week) and noticed when I check my progress in my achievement that my Sim's net worth is listed at $7,000 even though she only has a little over $1,000 on hand and I started with a completely fresh sim in a fresh save. I'm guessing this is because the achievement takes into account the worth of the lot the sim lives on. I chose the one in the Goth neighborhood so that gave her a boost of $5,500 right there that she hasn't actually earned. Not sure how to handle this as it feels...cheaty for her to have that extra boost at the start even if her bills are going to be higher then if she was on a cheaper lot. Should I start the challenge over on a cheaper lot or check to see what the cheapest lot available is and use anything above that cost as a loan that she needs to pay back before the end of the challenge, or just make myself have to earn that extra amount in the total before I consider the challenge over. The loan I have to pay back would probably add an extra challenge but it might be easier in the long run just to tack it onto the total I have to earn on the end value. *ponders*
Anyway I love this challenge so far no matter which I choose she still has a long, fun road ahead of her.
@3KNPen Yes as you already know net worth is the actual Simoleons on hand plus the value of the lot and anything in personal and family inventory. Same thing happens when you start with the Wealth Aspiration. It will register the Simoleons on hand before reducing funds to Zero. I used that same lot myself a few times for this challenge. It is a great place for collectibles and has a nice view. Your choice as to whether you wish to start again (I would not ).
I've kept playing the challenge on the lot. I did some checking and saw that the cheapest lots were the $1,500 lots so I've decided that my sim took out a $4,000 loan in order to cover the extra cost of the more expensive lot. That loan will need to be paid back by the end of the challenge. It can be paid back at any time as long as it's before she reaches the 500K mark however for every week that goes by that it's not paid off she's going to be charged $150 in interest. I've been trying to keep things interesting by charging myself for things that aren't charged in the game. She can sleep on the bench next to her lot for free but if she sleeps somewhere off her lot she gets the first time free but after that is charged $25 per night. I've also been penalizing myself for fails on my part. For instance Aria's ended up doing this...
On several occasions (I feel like such a horrible Sim parent each time she passes out lol) each time I charge myself $50 for the failure.
Yes it makes it a little more of a challenge for myself in the long run but it also makes it more fun as well lol.
Thank you I think she turned out amazingly wonderful and she is a complete and utter joy to play. She fights me constantly but that's just makes her all the more fun to have around. Which for me is important in a challenge where you only get the one sim to play...
So I hate to double post but I finished the first week and haven't set myself up a dedicated thread for this yet so have an update.
I have decided to call this challenge: Aria's Adventures in Playing Rosebud Solitaire (aka: Drink Every Time Aria Realizes She's in this Challenge)
* * *
This is Aria Gray. She is a Creative, Gloomy, Loner who really just wants to be left alone to paint All the Amazing Things. Unfortunately for her I have selected her to take part in the Rosebud Solitaire Challenge.
Aria was moved into the empty lot in the Goth neighborhood. She took out a $4,000 loan to cover the difference between it and the cheapest lots available in the game. She can pay it back at anytime as long as it's before she hits the 500K mark. However she will be charged an interest payment of $150 per week that the loan is outstanding.
She has spent most of the first week of the challenge doing a lot of this...
A bit of this...
And being generally too exhausted, tense and hungry to do much of this...
Even though it's the focus of her job and her aspiration and pretty much all she wants to be doing all of the time if the whims she rolls up constantly are any indication.
All in all I don't think she's very pleased with me at the moment lol.
By the end of the first week she'd earned the right to a tiny windowless not-quite-a-box house which I already hate and will be renovating as soon as I feel comfortable doing so. She has mostly meager furnishings though we splurged for a slightly better then horrible bed and a more expensive counter because it came in colors I liked. Before midnight struck I changed out the bookcase for a stereo and a mirror instead. I didn't buy her an easel because she'll be getting a better one from work after her next promotion. I know most people do the lawn-living as long as possible because it's cheaper but after watching her struggle for a week I had to give in and give her an actual home.
Our weekly markers will be the bunny statue.
For some reason I couldn't actually screen cap the achievement page (my computer is crap) so I hope it's okay to just write my status updates down as I go.
At the end of the 1st Week we were standing at $10,788/500K. $5,500 of that is the lot and the rest is mostly made up of the household stuffs. She has $724 in her savings. We have nothing currently in either inventory. Her first week bills were $262 ($112 in actual in-game bills and $150 for an interest loan payment I deducted myself). Over the course of the week we charged ourselves $50 for staying in the same place more-than-once and $150 for pass out failures. We have no friends because it was hard enough just to keep her from passing out and she was already so tense from low fun that I didn't want to compound more tension from her loner trait on top of that.
So all in-all probably not the best start but not completely horrible. I have learned a lot for if I ever decide to do this challenge again after this one is over lol. I'm not overly worried about the slow start since I know once I can get her settled down with an easel she'll start bringing in the money rather quickly.

That is what I did as well. I used the first runs as examples of how NOT to make it work.
I also created a few all purpose rooms to use when it was time to upgrade the living spaces.
I finished my second week so an update of my challenge (I intersperse this with play in my Legacy save thus the time passing between update).
Aria is still Aria.
She had a much easier week this week since she no longer had to sleep on benches or had to gather her food or rely on the kindness of strangers to eat. She spent most of the early part of the week working towards her next promotion at work which would gain her the easel she desperately wanted.
She attained her goal about halfway through the week. After which she immediately started the first piece of art on it.
It wasn't all happy fun times for Aria though as she occasionally was forced to do the most dreaded of things for a loner sim. Socialize to keep her social from tanking. Thankfully it's not as bad as it could be since she gets social at work but the social still goes down fairly quickly. We will definitely be saving up for the reward trait that keeps that need from decaying as soon as possible.
Aria doesn't enjoy talking to children (you're probably lucky his parents weren't around to see you making that face at their child Aria).
She also doesn't like talking to people her own age.
Thanks to the recent addition of Get Together in my game I was able to send her to Windenburg where we managed to find one person she didn't completely hate talking to. Bjorn Bjergsen who is an adult and unfortunately married. Not that it really matters since she's probably going to out live him and she can't marry anyone in anyway. He's not her friend yet but I might keep trying on it since she did seem to like him which for her is a rare, rare thing indeed lol.
While in Windenburg I made use of the easels that were scattered about the place to give her a change of scenery. This proved an advantageous idea because while she was there she painted two Masterpieces in a row. This is the second one did it's a large pop art piece.
And this is the first one she did. This was a large paint from references pieces and I really loved how it turned out so we kept it to decorate the house.
Monday rolled around and so did the bills. The in-game bills were $223 and I charged her the $150 loan payment and an added $25 for the trip to Windenburg. With the addition of funds from another promotion she got on this day we had like $8,000 dollars in reserve at this point thanks to her painting and one day of collecting in the home neighborhood.
I then went ahead and used almost all of it to remodel her house. I really hated the old one and so I completely demolished it and rebuilt from scratch. By the end of it we had like $400 left and it's not even completely decorated yet lol.
A second bunny to mark the end of the second week of the challenge. Also two wildflower bunches to mark the two masterpieces. I've decided I'll add a flower bunch for each one. Hopefully we'll a field of flowers surrounding the house by the end of the challenge.
The inside of the house. The kitchen is tiny and things are still a little bare but I'm incredibly happy with it. My idea is to start to get the house out of the way early so that I can concentrate on saving money straight on after that.
Before the end of the night she paints her third masterpiece. Since it's before midnight I purchase a third wild flower bunch for outside. I also buy two comfy chairs and the TV she had the whim for. We are saving up for that reward trait after all.
Here are the Stats for Week 2:
Total Wealth: 21,462/500K
Actual on hand Money: A little over $1K
Bills: $398
We have one item in our inventories. I went ahead and purchased a Youth Potion once I'd saved up enough points for it. I won't be using it until she's ready to age up into an adult but I was afraid I'd forget to buy it and spend the points on other things if I didn't get it right away.
Bonus Pics Because I really adore her and the facial expressions she makes:
I truly could not have asked for a better sim to do this challenge with. She's a grumpy sour 🐸🐸🐸🐸 and her attitude (and facial expressions) are going to keep me entertained throughout the long journey of this challenge.
RE: Rosebud Challenge & Rosebud 500K Solitaire Challenge
There have been a few additions to the game since these were first posted.
Does anyone have questions or suggestions for possible updates to the challenge?
Hi Everyone! I started this challenge a few times. (posted all that info on EQ's blog)
Any way.... I just wanted to pop in and say that this is fun! And I've also recorded several Let's Play videos to boot!!
I'll pop back in with the link later.

YESSSSSSSS!!!! I made this mistake once before. lol By the way....... thanks! I revamped my simself, added a few pieces of CC (which are all safe), and I think I look better this way.
I am inspired by the renewed interest in this challenge. I am starting this again with a Sim already in my Library. Poor Grace had to strughle thru the first 2 weeks with Zero Simoleons. Due to a recent patch Sims no longer tolerate freeloaders eating their food, showering or sleeping in their homes. Luckily her empty lot was near a public outhouse. Grace was less than thrilled with the Yucky plumbing. Having been to a roadside rest / outhouse I empathize with her discomfort.
Intro and updates coming soon.
Thanks, EQ!! And as of this post, I am uploading PART 4 to my channel -- RIGHT NOW!!! woohooooooo!!! lol
BTW .... the link for my part 3.5 is somehow linked to maybe/possibly here. Can you please check this, hon??
FYI: Now is the perfect time to complete the Curator Aspiration.
The Eggs are fairly easy to collect and do count towards the "Complete a Collection" goal.
Once completed the Curator Aspiration allows you to Sell Collectibles to the Simsonian Museum for extra money.
