I have made several video tutorials on how to build various roofing structures within the base game. The newest edition is on how to create mansard roofing. If anyone has any other specific things about roofing that they would like tutorials for, feel free to give me suggestions.

This is a tutorial on how to make domes in the Sims 4 in three different sizes.

Interesting video, thanks for working on it! This will be really helpful for those planning a dome roof as you've explained why you've used the dimensions you did and I certainly learned a few things that I didn't know. Very insightful and nice to hear your thought process on roofing.

I may have to fiddle with the roofing on my current project in light of watching this video to refine it a little more. I won't say much but I was inspired by your Green Dragon Tavern to create a different type of animal shape. Well done sir, your video is much appreciated. :)

Excellent tutorial, Aquilifer! The domes you create with your method are so intricate; I'm sure if I'd tried doing one on my own, it would have come out far more basic (if I'd even managed to figure it out!). I'm keeping this thread bookmarked for sure!

@aquilifer Haven't see you on the forums for a while - hope you're still around! I could use a little roofing help. I thought I might go about making some homes inspired by the architecture of Zaandam, Netherlands, in particular the Inntel Hotel:

Specifically, see the blue structure on the upper right? I thought I might tackle that one as a stand-alone home. I really love its roofline, and I knew it would be challenging, but I'm beginning to think it's just not possible to replicate. I've got the roofing at the top, and also at the bottom, but to get the middle portion of the roof design done properly is eluding me. Any suggestions? Or do I just need to compromise and come up with another design that will work in TS4?

It would be awesome if you could pull it off! We have lots of that kind of roofing over here (though most of them are not that colourful), I see them all the time and have tried to replicate it, but failed. I think we need to be able to build higher than 3 levels to actually make a home of it.
What have I been up to lately? Cerrydd / #cerrydd in the gallery

It would actually be really easy if we could have fourth story walls. I'm also a completely NoCC kind of a builder, but I can see using a custom roof decoration for that, like the two Spanish style ones currently in game, since it's not really roofing. Still, I have some thoughts on how to replicate that sort of shape. I will try it out and get back to you.

I'm still around. I'm just hoping for some new building elements for inspiration, and meanwhile working through Dragon Age. Any building I start lately just looks like a version of something I've already built.

@BryonyRae Thoughts on this? Clearly I've adapted it somewhat, but this is essentially what I had in mind when thinking it would be somewhat easy to do this on multiple floors. I've preserved all the lines as in the original roof, but incorporated it into the third floor, and used the decorative dome piece to get around needing another full story for the uppermost right angles. I'm actually thinking of a much more complicated version right now which wouldn't need the dome piece at all, but I wanted to show this to you first.

That's a really good approximation, @aquilifer! Helps me see where I was going wrong too. Yeah, I'd really rather not use that dome, so I'm curious about your more complicated version when/if you have a chance. Glad you're still around! I've been playing a lot of Dragon Age too. :) I'm slower than a snail getting through it, but I'm savoring it because it's the kind of game I'm going to be sad to finish. Anyway, thanks so much for taking a look at it!

@BryonyRae This still isn't a super complex version, because I've kept it on multiple floors again, but this eliminates the dome. I used a combination of a half hip and a half gable with the eaves pulled back for the top. Matching the edges of the two pieces requires some playing around with their heights, too. The longer you make the half gable, the flatter you can make the top of it by curvature, but then you have to cover up the curvature somehow. The second picture shows an unfinished example of a gable used for covering up the curves. It would also give you room to play around with adding some dormers on the third floor, jutting out of the gable.

I had to widen the base by one square on each side, as well, to accommodate the topmost roofing parts, because the half hip needed to be wider in order to make it rounded instead of pointy.

Thanks! These will all definitely be useful! Roofs can be one the hardest portions of building homes.
