Sim Stories mouse glitch-help?

I reinstalled my Life Stories game, that I hadn't played in months. When the game loads, I try to click on things with the mouse. When you click with the mouse usually, you know how you get options like in a ring, then you can click one of those options? Well, when I click, everything disappears like instantly, all the options, as if I never clicked that item. I remember having this problem before, and I remember someone telling me how to fix it, but I don't remember the fix.

Hubby suggested that I slow down the 'double click speed' under mouse options, but that did not help. If I click anything, the 'pie menu' flashes, and its gone before I can click anything.
