I created this topic in september 2014, asking people to compare basegames.

I haven't bought TS4 yet. But, from what I saw, I think The Sims 4 is better.

But I do play Sims 4 from time to time in between hours of 2 and 3. I honestly think it has potential. All Sims games did. Remember when Sims 3 came out and everybody hated it until like 2011?
All Sims games got more and more interesting as expansions came out over time.
The Sims got the most interesting in 2001 and on.
The Sims 2 got the most interesting in 2006 and on.
The Sims 3 got the most interesting in 2011 and on.
And if we follow logic like that, Sims 4 will get interesting in 2016 (now) and on.
No, not everybody;) If I'd hated Sims 3 I would have never continued playing it. Of course games get better with expansions, but when you compare basegames (Sims 2 and 4)? Apart from that, we've reached "2006" and "2011" with Sims 4, would you say it already lived up to its potential?
Looking back on that that was a very stupid post and now I regret even commenting here in the first place.
This will probably be another stupid post.

I was just really into TS4 when posting that, but after a few weeks it got boring...again.
I don't think Sims 4 will ever live up to its potential now that I think about it.
Even WITH the expansions, nothing feels different. Same game, different stuff I'm either not interested on or will never do.
With Sims 1, 2, and 3, you knew that the new stuff was there (in Sims 1 there was the mystery man that delivered the Makin' Magic kit and Mr. Humble in Sims 2 with the computer), but with Sims 4, it just feels...shallow.
It's empty and feels like the shadow of the previous 3 games.
Oh sure you can see the new stuff in CAS and Build/Buy, but quite a bit of it is sorta uninteresting.
Which is why it still feels the same; a lot of the stuff in the Sims 4 expansions and stuff packs are boring compared to Sims 1 - 3.
There's no personality to it and it feels like EA trying to get a corporate buck from us fans.

@SirDerrickTheSimmer I'm starting to think it's true what people say: if there's something wrong with the basegame (for you, it's always subjective of course) no EP will save that. The other way around goes as well. That save will EP no... (sorry, kidding) When you like the basegame it doesn't matter if an EP isn't completely your thing or even a bit poor, it will add something to the game anyway and you'll have fun with it. I think the reason people love Sims 2 has everything to do with the way their personalities were designed. And that was basegame.

The Sims 2. I enjoyed The Sims 4 for what it was. A lot of things are left out, the game is stripped down, however CAS and gene inheritance is spot on and I did connect with my sims. What killed it for me, was something that I was aware of a good year and a half ago when I bought it. Forced updates. Sorry, but I'm just not rocking those M-M, F-F pregnancies, gender modification and unisex CAS. Even if it is optional, the fact that I could not have even expressed my distaste about it on the forums without having my threads closed really made me feel insignificant and not part of the games community. The Sims 3 was in the same danger zone as well (hated body hair update personally and it really ruined it for me), however The Sims 4 is even more so, as it's no longer just pre-expansion updates that add things in, but now monthly updates. If you don't like something added you either live with it, or you leave it. So I left it.

So here I am, looking at the next 3, potentially 4 years of The Sims 2 playing, pointlessly hoping that either another company tries life simulation, or that The Sims 5 will somehow be THE ONE again. I do feel like The sims 4 was a reboot that the series kind of needed after The Sims 3. However I still think that the game is aimed at a smaller demographic this time and it's just not entirely exactly what The Sims 2 fans needed.

Exactly!! People say just wait for more expansions.. They're supposed to ADD to an already good game, not make up for previously missing content. I can easily just play TS2 and TS3 just the base game, and still be very entertained. Unlike the Sims 4, which I have one GP and one EP and its still soo boring and lacking.

I love Sims 2. All the way.

In terms of gameplay, Sims 4 appears to be more interactive and has less need for posing (although I hate the fact that you cannot pick up your sims with cheats).

However, in terms of story lines and storytelling aspects, wishes and wants, lifetime aspirations, turn-ons and offs, etc - Sims 2 wins hands down. It might be an old game but I feel like a lot more thought went into the creative process. Even though I hardly ever play the premades, I love the fact that they have detailed backstories. I can never get bored with it. Even if that happens, I can always go into CAS and make another sim to play with.

Even though I own Sims 2, Sims 3 an Sims 4 (still need to get my hands on a copy of Sims 1), Sims 2 is the game I always come back to.
Check out my stories: Cederville Heights (TS2) and The Delios Legacy (TS4)

the difference between 2 and 4 is that 4 is babyish and 2 is not.
I remember you from university, I still have your story.

Nah , Sims 2 is da best ...
if sims 5 had : good sims like sims 2 , good hair like cc , emotions from sims 2 , and little cutscenes like the ones on sims 2 (birthday , first kiss and so ...)

I have alot to say and I'm writing on my phone which is always a pain in the split cheeks, so I will just copy my thoughts on this from my "the essence of the sims" thread, but since this compares sims 2 and 4 you can ignore the 2 things I added from sims 1.
*
The big thing this game lacks of is special NPCs and those unexpected moments that made the precious sims games so diverse. Toddlers too, I love family play and ofcourse I miss them, but I would trade them any day of the month if I could get the special sims moments back that I will bring up in this comment.

I miss being robbed. I miss having a random fire in the kitchen. It was unexpected when it happened and it made the game more dynamic and real. Even if some things were very surreal, it still contributed to the ”real life” feeling, because sometimes things happen and you have to deal with it then and there.

It didn’t even bother me if someone died. I mean yes, ofcourse I was devastated when my pregnant mother of 2 unexpectedly died from warming up in front of the fireplace. I probably shouldn’t have bought the least expensive one. I wasn’t worried though, I had a landline directly to the Grim Reaper, who resurrected my beloved sim for me. It was costly, I would have saved on just buying the forking expensive fireplace. Unfortunately she lost her baby, I suppose you have to give a life for a life, things like that happen when you die.

I could have loaded another save just minutes earlier, but I like these things about the game. How it always tend to steer off the normal path and make it interesting. I didn’t even know you could get pregnant by aliens. When that happened I was blown out of my mind! The funniest part was how the NPC alien parent was named, Pollination technician, I laughed for days.

Those surprises is what I love. I had a super big family and had some problem taking care of everyone, so the father went bananas, mimicking chickens while the mother was rocking a bag of flour, and a therapist showed up! How funny ain’t that?

Just to get back to the ACTUAL PHONE TO GRIM REAPER(sooo cool). My crazy scientist loved to resurrect zombies. He had lots of them. And he had actual graveyards to visit….

And remember how you could be on a date in town when suddenly old Crumplebottom showed up and ruined it? Hilarious. It could get annoying sometimes, I mean why would she need to visit a nightclub(sims 2 nightlife ep)? But I still like the idea of an old prude walking around like that, and I miss it.

I miss the responsibilities you had and most importantly the consequences! If I left my baby on the floor and went to work, a social worker would show up and take it away from me. If I had a bad relationship with my teenager, she would run away. Same with my pets. I could get my pockets picked if I wasn’t smart enough to stay away or notice the scam. I could go to jail, and my teenagers could get escorted back home in a police car if they were doing mischief late at night.

I liked when Drew showed up at my parties, I’m all for rewards too(not just consequenses). But most fun was when the Dropinsky party crashers stormed in! Give us more of that! Oh, and do you remember how the flamingo sculptures could come to life?!

And I don’t know how long I tried to figure out the mystery of Bella Goth. Honestly… I spent years on that. I had a whole book where I had written clues and thoughts.

Also I just Loved how you could be on a university lot and then suddenly some random dude is running around with his plumsack flapping all over the place! Imagine if Crumplebottom had seen that! Streaking students and toga parties. Ah… those were the days.

And to sum this all up I just want to say: Pimples. My teenagers actually had pimples, as it should be. Also... I love the new build mode, just give me auto roofs....

I prefer sandbox mode, if the sims 2 didn't have timed parties or dates it'd be great. I think sims 4 was the worst for building custom community lots.

At the moment I prefer using the Sims 4, but I believe the Sims 2 was a better game 'as of yet'.
First the good about Sims 4 - (Obviously the Graphics/Cas/Loading screens)
- I have gone back to the Sims 2 before and the big thing I noticed was the closed world, it makes a HUGE difference having semi-open worlds, my stories all happened on my lot, because I could never be bothered to go anywhere else - and I still can't, really, but at least in Sims 4 I have a whole neighbourhood to explore without needing a taxi, rather than not being able to step off my front garden.
-The second thing was the scenery, Sims 4 is like a work of art, the sun rays are beautiful and you can't even tell where a lot ends without a grid. Especially Windenburg, some of the roads/countryside views there are so real and similar to places where I live in England, it gives me such a nostalgic feeling, but sims 2 had block like lots which stuck out like a sore thumb.
- Above is also the reason I don't miss editting a neighbourhood, usually I was terrible at it anyway, sticking rocks everywhere and multiple rainbows. However when I did manage to stick it out and make a gorgeous neighbourhood, I never even got to appreciate it in game because we were limited to our lots. Whereas in Sims 4, I already have stunning neighbourhoods.
- Clothing/Hair in Cas, for the first time throughout the series, I don't have to use CC, I really adore the hair and the clothes that come with the vanilla game, even the clay hair has its own style that suits the character of Sims 4, whereas in previous games I basically drowned everything with CC.
- I also think it's amazing that we can go to alien worlds like Sixam, or other hidden locations.

However, Sims 2 had so much dark humour, fantasy and character. Ghosts could actually kill you, the grim reaper was terrifying. There were Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies! You could get facial surgery which would mess up your looks. The Cut scenes were amazing, and the game wasnt afraid to be a bit naughty (while still keeping in the boundry of the age restriction).
I adored how you could step into a pre-made characters life, and they would already have all the emotional ties set up. Such as Cassandra, you jump right into her wedding day. The Caliente sisters had a burglar that came over in the first day or two. Don already had romantic relations with about 5 different women and a date schedualed. One sim was cheating on her old husband with Don, it was clear she thought her hubby had one foot in the grave. There was history to every family, and legitimate ties. Instead of in Sims 4 where the description is the only effort at story telling we get.

And that is why Sims 2 is better so far. While Sims 4 has a lot of stuff and oppertunities to do more, it's pointless with out the intruige of Sims 2's storylines and attention to detail. Hopefully in future EPs we get more and more of that in Sims 4.

Well, at launch, TS4's base was just a little bit behind TS2's for me. TS2 has deeper gameplay, gives you more control over the development of your sims' stories and relationships, and allows you to make your own custom neighborhoods. However, TS4 has the superior CAS and Build Mode, explorable districts (not a full open world, but still fun to mess around with), has the dating mechanics built into the base game, you can have latchkey kids without the stupid social worker ruining your storyline, and the sims are more interesting to watch in action.

For a while, TS4 actually felt like it was catching up to TS2 too. They added pools and ghosts in a patch, the memory system added more strategic depth to the use of emotions, two new careers were patched in...But then they screwed up the memory system, made the same sims keep popping up at every venue instead of just randomizing it, and added inactive household relationship decay instead of just getting rid of the random new relationships that the game generates for inactive played sims. WTH?

So, at this time TS2's base game kicks TS4's base game's butt. And it's all because they broke so many good things in this game instead of adding more good things to it... :/

I like the creepy low poly mouths on sims 2 if sims 4 had creepy low poly mouths too I would like that more. But Sims 4 it's way easier to create animation and to edit the character sims 2 is...it will make you sweat

I always liked the Sims 2 more, purely for it's gameplay. I love the Sims 4 for it's looks and animations, but.. the gameplay replay value is just not as good as the Sims 2. I can create so much more stories even though the looks are outdated, i'm having more fun with the older installement of the Sims series. Can't help it. Maybe it's because I grew up playing since the beginning. I like the Sims 4 and it's fun, but I get really bored after playing for a few days, which is not the case with 2.

i always loved the sims 2. Before i came back to it, i thought that it was just a "good old day" stuff, just some nostalgia.
And i start playing again, just to see.
First, the sims 4 win on the graphics, the build mode and the create a sims (except for the chemistry).
And for the rest, it's the sims 2. It's not easy to find the job you want for your sims, not easy to keep it (wrong choice ? fired), so many way to spent money (you have to buy clothe, and it give sense to a clothes store), the teens looks and act like teen, same for the children, and there is always something to surprise us.
The pre-made families, there is mystery, like the goth, challenge like the broke family, or even the capp and the monty with romeo and juliette, or even Olive Specter (is she a killer or the grim reaper is a bit jealous ?). This was awesome.

Yesyesyes! The pre-made families were my all time favorite. I always played the broke family because they actually had a story. In the Sims 4 I couldn't care less about the pre-mades. They just don't seem that interesting.

I tried to play the sims 2 again. I really did, but it just couldn't hold my interest longer than 10 minutes. It's not because of graphics or anything like that. It's just not my game.

I tried to play TS4 again- get those silly sugar skulls ... but it's the same old game. It still looks like blurry crud without a mod to sharpen it. And the Sims were so... boring. It has time, sure- but I doubt it'll ever be a creative game that I've enjoyed through the older iterations.

This is exactly why I continue being intrigued by Sims 2, even though the whole set up of Sims 3 suits me better: the sims. They're constantly interesting to watch and follow.
