Counters and couches won't join up

Yesterday while redecorating a house, I had issues with the counters not joining up in the corners. Every time I placed a counter next to the corner one it (the one in the corner) would disappear.
The same thing happened with couches or sofas that join up to make "L" shapes. Every time I tried the piece next to it would just vanish. The shadow would still be there but not the sofa.
