You can earn money from skills, too. You can sell paintings, write books, sell produce from gardening, sell fish from fishing, "Solve the Impossible" on a computer if your Sim is a genius, and even Hack at night if your Sim is a computer wiz. There are also various opportunities that present themselves and will allow you to earn simoleons upon completion.
Ctrl Shift C then type motherlode into the bar on top and press enter. Thats a quickie 50k. If you are determined to earn it and not use a cheat all of MagicGirls suggestions are great. I will add that collecting bugs(some of those butterflies sell for a couple hundred bucks each) and rocks/gems can get you a bit of money, so can dumpster diving or going through the junkyard and selling what you find.
