I'm at the goal where I have to search for ghosts and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to do that....

One of your Sims needs to select ghost hunting as a hobby. To do that, purchase a haunted bookcase or painting through Furniture and place it in the Sim's home. Select the item and among the options that come up will be ghost hunting.
