For those uninstalling/reinstalling - I would suggest moving the basegame up to the highest (you're willing to go) as early in the processes as possible.

Now Bluebellflora may have further reasons behind her suggestion to install in order, but from an engineering standpoint installing in order will do this:
      Install Basegame (1.0)
Install EP1 (patches basegame to 1.5, installs EP1)
Install SP1 (patches basegame to 1.9, installs SP1)
Install EP2 (patches basegame to 1.12, installs EP2)
      etc...

Instead I would do one of two things. Option 1:
      Install Basegame (1.0)
      Patch live to 1.47
Install EP1 (Recognizes basegame is higher than 1.5 and skips patch, installs EP1)
Install SP1 (skips patch, installs SP1)
      etc...

OR, if you don't want to be near Seasons because it is unstable:
      Install Basegame (1.0)
Install highest product you want such as Supernatural (patches to 1.3X (?), installs EP)
Install EP1 (Recognizes basegame is higher than 1.5 and skips patch, installs EP1)
Install SP1 (skips patch, installs SP1)
      etc...
This should take less time with identical (if not cleaner?) results.

I second this. While I did follow some of BlueBellFlora's instructions, I decided to install the latest patch before I installed anything else after installing the base game. Basically:

    - Base Game
    - Latest Patch (At the time, it was 1.39)
    - Rest of EPs and SPs IN ORDER. (Of course, you could also do SimGuruSteve's suggestions and install EP1 and then SP1, etc.)

My game has been working smoothly since. This was long before Steve appeared, so I can support this.

You can always install the latest version without the ones in-between, the launcher should pick up the cumulative patch for that. However, Seasons will only work with 1.42 and later (ie, only 1.42 and 1.47).

Sorry, SimGuruSteve, but when you say Seasons will only work with 1.42 and later, do you mean (1.42 and 1.47) or (either 1.42 or 1.47)

Keeping my fingers crossed that you mean the latter.
Seasons requires a basegame at 1.42 or later. Currently there are only two flavors, 1.42 and 1.47. Either will work. My point above is that 1.39 will not work with seasons.

ok, so what you're saying is that if i do in fact order the 70s, 80s, 90s stuff pack and install that before i install in of the other packs it may be possible that the errors and crashing MAY go away??

additional question: i asked this in another thread, but maybe you can clarify. is there anyway possible to update or rather download an update to a thumb drive on a computer then take that thumb drive and use the patch to update to a computer with the game? i'm asking because i'm deployed and we don't have internet available on our personal computers, but it would be nice to be able do update the when patches are released instead of waiting until aa sp/ep is released.

Oh thank God! And thanks for clarifying SimGuruSteve.

Now I'll skip 1.42 all together and hope that 1.47 will download.

I have been kind of frustrated that Riverview and Lunar Lakes wouldn't install. But I did get Barnacle Bay and HIdden Springs to install. I've always loved Riverview the most, and with what 1.47 fixes, I should be able to install them all (she said keeping her fingers crossed and knocking on wood).

Actually the main reason I mentioned following Bluebellflora's advice is her warnings on uninstalling, and how to do a "clean" uninstall by making sure you remove Cider Preferences and a couple other things.

So it's good to read what she has to say, even if you do a different reinstall.

No, 70's, 80's, and 90's requires 1.47 or later. It seems that anything after 1.42 makes the game unstable.

Yes, you can download the cumulative update to a thumbdrive (or whatever). Double click to apply and select the basegame file. You can do this with Mac or PC - being able to apply a patch to a computer without internet connect was a requirement of ours.

Yes, there are some other cleaning procedures that she probably knows much better than I personally do. Our QA team has a cleaning script that I have to run on the Mac - it probably does the exact same thing.

SimGuruSteve, firstly, Thank you for responding to us. I sincerely apologize for my hostile post. Secondly, I installed the patch and whenever I try to play it says to insert the disc. But it's already inserted..

Off the top of my head that should work, 1.39 should be sufficient for everything besides Seasons. I'll double check my version numbers when I get into work tomorrow.

Can you double check your basegame and cider version through the info.plist?

Sorry, I'd normally give you more detailed instructions or not bother posting to say "I'll check when I get in tomorrow," but I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you when I answered WeasieLou. Or I think that's the name. I'm typing in bed on an iPod, I can't go back and check.

    Totally understood.

I have since used the launcher to update to 1.47, but this is the info from info.plist the first time I installed the patch and got the error:

    Client build: 1.39.3.018001
    Cider build: 8258

I'm taking a bit of a break from this. I no longer feel Super Frustrated, and I kind of like that, so I'm going to savor that for a while before I uninstall and reinstall in your recommended order and try again.

I don't see why this wouldn't work with every pack except for Seasons. Plus, the instructions I gave shouldn't really affect the final outcome, but should be a more efficient way to install. You should be able to play Supernatural at 1.39. Try verifying by installing that first maybe? There's a very slim chance that the 1.39 patch I uploaded might be wrong - but I highly doubt it, the version numbers check out and I make a huge fuss about making sure a version number never has different contents.

Nothing in the patch has changed about disc authentication, I don't know what errors would cause that.

Yeah, I guess I'll try installing just the base game and Supernatural next, and applying the patch. It knows it's Supernatural - the right icon, the right name, the right start-up screen (after I update using the Launcher, that is), blah blah blah.

I have the some problem with ShoeQueen1.
Every time I finished my latest patch 1.47 downloading, it just told me: "You cannot apply this patch on this version of the application, please re-install" and "Patching files 3.7.TG13.008247" What's wrong with my version of the application?
I've have no idea what is going on and I re-installed it for 3 times. Now my sims can't stargaze. When I told them to do so,they just jump out their house. I'm so angry because it never happened before and now I don't even know how to deal with this problem which has spent my time so much...Ugh! I want my sims married! I want my sims to use their telescope!
I want this problem fixed IMMEDIATELY! (I don't use mods at all)

I have a mac and I havent updated to 1.47 due to the instability of my game. If you guys to a clean install, get rid of all CC and install xquartz, it should work fine, thats whats been keeping me afloat since supernatural.

    Gosh,

The support hasn't been contacting me for a week. They said that I was escalated to the specialists team and should expect a response in 24 hours. THIS WAS SAID A WEEK AGO. At least, they could be kind enough to reply.

I just updated to the new patch and now the launcher won't even open. It says Unknown Error Occurred. Anyone else have this problem? :(

I installed just the base game and Supernatural and patched to 1.39. I opened the game - success.

Later I'll spend a few hours installing the rest of the games and see if my luck holds out.

If The Sims 3 wasn't so 🐸🐸🐸🐸 terrible for the consoles, I would get it. I can never rely on these computer games..... but unfortunately, it's BEST on the computer.... sigh.....

I'm using the 1.39 patch and I'm able to play Seasons... o_O Well, don't really know for how long, but at least I'm able to get past the launcher. The only thing that continues to bug me is the Error 12 when saving. That thing's a 🐸🐸🐸🐸!

I first tried uninstalling seasons, but the patch just made the game freeze constantly. Now I've reinstalled all my EPs except Seasons and Supernatural, and I didn't dare get any updates at all. The problem is I can't even play the game. It won't let me place households in empty houses so I can only play the townies, and I don't want that. Should I get updates? I am going crazy here. This is like the third time I've reinstalled all my EPs. I've wasted way too much time and money on this game...

Use Bluebellflora's advice on "uninstalling". You need to get rid of Cider Preferences and some other things.

SimGuruSteve gives different advice on "reinstalling", however I used Bluebell's prior to his post, and have had no problems playing (but I'm only up to the installation of Pets).

I installed in order, then rebooted my computer and opened the game, installed the patch/update SPECIFIC for that EP and played the game for several hours.

You DO NEED TO install the updates, SPECIFIC to the EP, as you go along. These will appear when you first open and run a newly installed EP, and they will say that they are for that EP (including the EP's name in the patch/update).

After installing those patch/updates, DO NOT install any other patch/update that appears on your screen. This way, you'll avoid installing the dreaded 1.42 update.

Every time you open your game, this update box will appear. Just CLOSE it.

You should open and play your game, after successfully installing each EP, SP. Open each new world that comes along. Make sure everything is running smoothly.

SimGuruSteve says we need update 1.42 or 1.47 installed to run SEASONS. DO NOT install 1.42, that causes error12 and crashing. To date, most mac users seem to be having a problem downloading 1.47, so I'm staying away from that for awhile.

Keep SEASONS on the shelf until EA does something to fix this. And enjoy playing the rest of your games.
P.S. Seasons will eat up memory, so you really need to have at least 8GBs to run it successfully.[/quote]

It kinda sounded like you might have been saying that only 1.42 was unstable, but any update after and including 1.42 has been unstable for a large group of users. 1.47 has no fixes, so it is just as unstable as 1.42.

    SimGuru:

I hate to be the one to say this because it seems like somebody at EA would've thought about this by now. But your problems with patching, testing and programming could be greatly alleviated by taking the Mac platform waaaayyyy more seriously and hiring some dedicated Mac programmers who actually know and love the platform to WORK WITH YOUR 3RD PARTY MAC PROGRAMMERS TO SOLVE THESE ISSUES!!! I'm saying this as both a programmer and a project manager. What you're doing is like playing the children's game, "telephone". You try to communicate the customer's problem, but by the time it's gone from the customer to the forum moderator, to the PC-based tech support person to the 3rd-party team, you get the "can't reproduce error" problem because there are too many layers of people that the problem has to filter through who don't know Mac before you get to the people who do. In short, this is a really bad management issue way more than it is a tech support issue. Hire some people who know Macs already and start solving problems!

You certainly have enough money from just the people in this forum who've bought your game and all the expansion packs to pay the salaries of a few hard-core Mac coders, so why don't you? I know you don't have any because if you did, they'd be answering questions here instead of you, mostly because they can. Get some Mac coders who's sole responsibility is to be the first line of defense with your 3rd-party coders (and your customers) because they know the Mac OS, Mac error codes and Mac coding in general.

Even better, HOW ABOUT YOU JUST START WRITING MAC CODE FROM THE GROUND UP INSTEAD OF PORTING TO CIDER?????!!!!!! I'm sure it's a cost-cutting measure, but is it really saving you money? Not if you start shedding paying customers because your software sucks. Yes, it's certainly going to be more work up front, but it'll be a helluva lot less trouble than what you're doing now, which is losing loyal customers who love your products and have bought them for years, but are sick of wasting money on games that don't work, don't get patches and don't get the attention they deserve.

FYI, the "can't reproduce error" thing is what 3rd-party developers tell their clients when they don't want to waste the money and manpower paying people to debug their work if the client is still willing to keep paying for buggy code. I've worked for 🐸🐸🐸🐸 companies that commonly use that excuse for this very reason. Why waste money fixing something the client is perfectly happy paying top dollar for broken? As a project manager, I'm telling you, it's time for someone at EA to start withholding the huge sums of money they're paying their Mac service provider until the 3rd-party code team starts swiftly knocking the more serious bugs off their issue logs. You'd be amazed at how much faster and effectively contractors work to solve problems when they think they might not get paid.

    Just my two cents!
