At first blush, I don't think §1M is too much - especially based on the luck I was having with a legacy I was starting. I had a wonder-dog that was bringing home pink diamond and tiberium every little bit and I had almost the entire legacy house built before the kids had aged up to teens....
BUT, with that said, I seem to be having less luck with Dusty! (Which I keep meaning to post some details! Soon, I promise!)

This game sure does keep us guessing sometimes. My RIMS game is moving slowly in the money department. I am thinking Twinbrook does not have many (or any?) Tiberium or Pink Diamond spawners. Just decided to add the Collection Helper Kitt has earned to help in the search. Thinking she should either travel or take up using the Mining tool.
Will be looking for your adventures soon.

Even if you choose not to share your Rain In My Shoes (RIMS) story I would love your feedback. You are invited to share hints, tips or game play strategy. Anything funny, exciting or frustrating happen while playing? Pictures and story or blog links are encouraged.
On that note Kitt Peregrine (from my RIMS story) had a son named Grady. Her son aged up from toddler to child in this outfit.

I decided to start over, and I'm having completely different luck this time around. And I started with the same initial save as the first time around. He found a compendium in the garbage this time, whereas all he found was scrap the first time around. Then he literally stumbled on a pair of uncommon/rare birds on day one!
One thing I can say for no transportation - you really notice a lot more collectibles. Or at least I did. I would never have found those birds if I had him going around in a taxi. I only saw them because he was walking around and I had the camera following him.
I wish I had the collection helper though, but I've not built up enough reward points yet.
And speaking of progress... I still need to post an update! I find I like to spend more time playing the challenge than I do taking notes/writing about it! So a mini- update on Dusty.
He became a professional sculptor and got married. Kia, the dog, aged up and they trained her to hunt. That is a major money maker, but much better if they are hunters and have the "Alpha Pet" reward. Anyway, they are now co-owners to the diner, the bookstore and the grocery store.
As for whether to start over or not... I don't know. Have you tried getting a hunting dog? For that matter a hunting cat, though not quite as profitable. Or perhaps a miner machine? And never overlook the power of the dumpster dive! If you have SN, get a gem cutter (or use the one in the elixer consigment store). If you are gardening, don't waste time on cheap plants. Go for the big money makers - most of the mushroom varieties, life fruit, flames that sort of thing.
  I also find myself engrossed in just playing the game. That is why this is such a ... well ... a challenge.
I must remind myself to do more dumpster diving. I am also watching consignment store for a miner and trying to get inventing skills up so I can make one ASAP. One way or another I will give it my best shot. My Kitt and her husband just aged up to adult so I better get to hustling!
I am also playing another save (... or two ...) just for fun. And want to set up Monte Vista to give it a proper go as well. And Christmas is just a few days away and making sure I am ready for that as well. My kids are all adults but that just means bigger .... and more expensive toys. LOL

I got some help and figured that I needed to type in the testingcheatsenabled true cheat first. With that said, I have my Sim made, placed him in Sunlite Tides and am having a lot of fun so far.
Glad you got it figured out.
FYI: For anyone who still needs to know here is how it is done.
First use the cheat window to activate testingcheatsenabled true.
Then enter familyfunds Dragonheart -16500 (or whatever funds the family has on hand. Just put in the code to subtract the required amount.
Please forgive me if you do not get a reply right away. I am monitoring this thread. In case I miss your comment and you need a quicker reply you can also post on the RIMS Rain In My Shoes thread as well. Thank you! -EQ

A RL College student would do odd jobs or work part time to supplement tuition, buy books and supplies.
Accepting the Day Jobs and Donating would be okay as well as Posing at the Art School and are part of the Uni experience.

Would it be ok to fix the fixer-upper car and sell that? Kind of feels like cheating as it sells for $30,000!
Yes you can use any means to make money. If you feel it is cheating you do not have to use it to make money. I used that car myself a few times when I played thru. I hope you are having fun with the challenge.
