Graphics Card/Memory

«1
Ok so I've been advised that getting more memory and a better graphics card will stop/help the crashing that's occurring. Now I can't afford it now, however, I am asking for suggestions as I'm not that great with computer hardware. What Graphics Card/Memory should I get for an ACER computer that is a few years old, and is used mainly for Sims 2, Sims 3, and most likely Sim City. I want something that I won't have to replace in a few years when more expansions and or Sims 4 come out. Also something that's affordable (aka I'm not going to spend the cost of a new computer to upgrade)

Also what would you recommend for Memory.

Thank you

April

EDIT: I have all the current expansions and stuff packs for Sims 2 and 3. Also a lot of store content.

First off, what's your budget. When buying a new graphics card, a good rule of thumb is to buy a card that you would want tomorrow (eg: more powerful) so it will not be outdated as fast. And when it comes to playing Sims 4, there is no known release date or system requirements, so the graphics card you buy today may very well be already outdated when it comes out. On average, a computer becomes completely outdated after 4 years.

I'd prefer to spend less than $200 if possible, though I know installation will probably make it more than that. I figured out what I thought would work with my limited knowledge and it came to around to that. I can go a little higher but not much.

A couple year old Acer. Well, you probably don't have a PSU that can handle a new GPU. And unless it came with a good CPU, you'll receive massive bottleneck. I wouldn't reccomend anything more than a 7750 for fear of bottleneck. It'll last you until maybe 2014. It will play Sims 3 on maxed out setting fine though.

    Radeon 7750 ($100) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102969

    Antec Neo Eco 400w ($40) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371029

The Neo Eco is a great PSU by the way. It is cheap because of it's low wattage, but it will handle a 7750 with flying colors. As for memory, I would make sure you have at least 3GB, though 4GB would be better. Go on crucial.com and run a test to determine what kind of memory you need. Post results and I will help you pick out some from newegg. If you want something that will be able to handle Sims 4, upgrade now and build or buy a new computer that has GOOD specs shortly before Sims 4 comes out.

It is very easy to install parts. You could easily do it yourself. I wouldn't pay someone to do something like that. Either do it yourself or find a friend who could.

Radeon 7750 is a nice bang for its buck, if only there was a Nvidia as powerful around the same price :(

ATI is much better for pure gaming than Nvidia. A GTX 650 will beat the 7750 for a little more, but a little more than the GTX 650 gets you a Radeon 7770 which beats the 650 pretty bad. Nvidia doesn't become worthwhile for it's price until you hit the GTX 670 and GTX 680.

To do a comprehensive recommendation I really, really need to know exactly what you have now. We know you have an Acer and that is all we know. A model number (and dxdiag) would be nice. Need to know what cpu, type of memory, amount of memory, operting system, etc.

I could recommend 4gb of main memory as TS3 is a 32 bit application and will never use more then 4gb (actually about 3gb) of memory. Type and speed of memory is important.

    TS3 is a DX9 game.

You what something for TS4. This is a hard one as there are no specs or even if there will be a TS4. Let's go on the assumption there will be. I guessing the graphics will be DX11 as this is the latest. Therefore you want a DX11 capable video card that is a least mid range (btw DX9 games play on DX11). Whether you buy ATI (AMD) or Nvidia (don't even think about Intel) is a personal preference as most dollar for performance is about equal. I have been using Nvidia and am quite happy with the product and driver support (driver support is very important). I recently bought a GTX 550 Ti and am quite happy with it. (was $150 w/$50 rebate - I hate rebates).
I do not work for EA nor do I have any association with EA. I am a gamer helping other gamers.

I'll have to pull up the dxdiag again, or find the thread where I posted it. Anyway, I can't afford it right at the moment (dental work and other bills are taking priority.), Thank you for those of you who suggested things.

As to me doing the work myself...not going to happen, I'm likely to really mess something up by doing that. I know enough about computers to know I don't know that much.

Also I'm worried that I'll spend all this money to upgrade and the game still will crash.

The strange part is since I asked, the random crashes have stopped...

But I've heard the ATI has weird shadow problems in the game? I've just seen many more people with Nvidia's for Sims 3 rather than ATI's. Which graphics card do you have?

I have both an Nvidia...in my desktop and an ATI in my Toshiba Satellite and they both run great. XD

If you can afford it I would go Nvidia..imo. XD

ATI is better. This is coming from a hardware expert. Get a 7750. No offense OP but your CPU is terrible. That is about the best card you could get that wouldn't receive massive bottleneck.

Should I upgrade the memory too, and yeah not the best computer, but it worked for sims until i loaded seasons.

This is why I asked for the dxdiag:

The Athlon 5000+ is an older processor - I have 2 around here and they are 2 generations behind in my gaming computers. You should be running a quad core or better now. The one I just built is a 6 core AMD processor. The free space is really low on the system drive (c).

That computer uses DDR2 memory. Today's technology is DDR3 which is faster. DDR2 right now is more expansive because of supply and demand and you are getting less performance for your money.

power supply is 220W - This will have to be upgraded. 220W is obsolete.

The 9200 video card is weak.

The Computer has Vista operating system. Win 7 is a much improved and polished Vista.

    Here's where your at:

processor still has life but fading fast.

memory needs to be 4gb - TS3 is a 32 bit application and can't access more then 4gb.

You will need a power supply. Don't cheap here. I would recommend a 600W name brand psu.

You need a video card with more power. An Nvidia based 9800 can be had as cheap as $50. TS3 is a DX9 game and the 9800 is a good DX9 card. Looking forward a DX11 card would be nice but a good card will be about $150. I recently got a GTX 550 Ti for $150 with a $50 rebate (and I did get it). For the money it runs TS3 just fine.

I still have 2 Vista computers but the Vista 32 bit is hardly used and I'm on the Vista 64 bit now.

If you don't have the money plan on a power supply, look for a sale on video cards (or rebates), and bump memory to 4gb. AND start saving for a new computer.
I do not work for EA nor do I have any association with EA. I am a gamer helping other gamers.

Would this desktop work (It's about what I'm figuring all this will cost me to upgrade anyway.) Everything seems to fit the specs from what I can tell, except not entirely sure about the graphics card.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Desktop+-+4GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive/7030093.p?id=1218824763854&skuId=7030093#tab=overview

Might be able to afford this in a few months.
That'll give me time to find all the sims 3 game cases (and sims 2 for that matter) so I can reinstall them on the new one.

Unfortunately I can't agree with this. Any ATI card I have ever owned has given me nothing but grief, even under light gameplay conditions. Three of them had to be returned under warranty because they completely stopped working (monitor wouldn't even turn on, or computer wouldn't boot) and every time they would come back "fixed" just to completely break again a few weeks later. I learned my lesson after that. I got my first Nvidia back in 2007 and it has run flawlessly ever since. Not a single issue with it and I still run it to this day every single game on the absolute highest settings (most recently Skyrim). It's been 5 years and still runs perfectly.

A previous company I worked for also had so many problems with ATI cards that the year before I started there the entire company switched over to Nvidia graphics cards and people were telling me how happy they were with the switch. I have to say also every person I know who are gamers have tried both ATI and Nvidia and none of them have ATI cards anymore.

Most of that computer would be fine, but the Intel HD graphics chip would need to be replaced with a supported and dedicated graphics card.

The 8400 is not that powerful of a card. It is the lowest supported 8000 series so I wouldn't expect you to be able to play on high. The graphics card I have, although old now, is still out-performing many new cards. The 9800 GT or GTX is now fairly cheap, even though it was around $350 when it first came out. It was the card I specifically bought to run Crysis which is still one of the most graphically demanding games available. It's a powerhouse of a card and I would highly recommend it. My boyfriend has one as well and he's a system architect/admin. and he also recommends it highly.

Haha 600 watts? She doesn't need anything more than 400w. 600 watts is for having high end cards and power hungry CPUs, not Athlon 5000s and 7750s. Get a 7750 by the way, just trust me. It is your best option now.

Price-wise, 600W isn't that much more than 400W, and is worth it. Newer cards can require more wattage, and it is always an important rule-of-thumb to have 100 more watts than required from the graphics card. A lot of cards require around 400-450, so the 400 could be insufficient. It never hurts to have more.

Again though, I can't agree on the ATI card personally. It is her decision, however the known shadowing issues in The Sims that is ATI-specific is enough to turn me away from any ATI card for playing The Sims, on top of the other issues I have experiences myself.

Montosaurous, LittleV, what do you two think of the computer I linked, also recommend a graphics card but I can't go over $400 including installation if I need a new graphics card.

I may be able to save enough by April to get that.

Also consider the desktop is *only* used for Sims 2 (including all stuff and expansions), Sims 3 (again including stuff and expansions) and hopefully Sim City. Really I don't play anything else, on occasion I'll put up netflix if I'm working on the laptop but not often.

Not sure I'm going to do anything, depends how things go however I will look into it.

Haha ATI destroys nvidia in most benchmarks. Until you get into the GTX 670 and GTX 680 Nvidia isn't worth it. At all.

It's about $20 more for a decent 620w PSU from Antec. A 7750 would run fine on that PSU.

Well, the CPU and RAM should be good. The graphics are not however. And that PSU stinks. You'll need at least 400w for a GPU of any kind. You won't be able to find a computer that can play TS3 well for under $500. Upgrading would be your best option.

what is a gsu and psu...

Also from what I can figure upgrading will cost me around $300-$500 but I'll keep looking into it.
