    i'm a guy and even i think that's cute :D

i think another thing that should be mentioned is that a few trees isn't a garden. there should be a mixture with variation of height. a good example is spectrefiends garden.
moveobjects cheat is also good to give a fuller effect especially with cat tails boston ferns. by rotating them slightly as well when doing this helps.
i also think that when a pool is put in don't just leave it un-styled, re-colour it as well

Oh, I almost forgot. Use emotional associations by deciding on what emotional impact you want the room to have. For a lively room use different shades of reds and yellows and in between. I f you prefer subdued choose blues and browns and in between. The emotional impact of color should reflect the activities being preformed in a space. If it is for rest such as a bedroom or family room, choose darker values of color that relate to restfullness such as blues greens and browns. (Personaly I like dark reds blacks and dark browns for a couples bedroom.)

And heres some stuff for small apartments:

I dont know if u can do this on sims 3 but put curtains not just on windows. Behind couches in the bathroom and outside the house. Lucite tables or chairs and glass tops all give the impression of openness while still delivering the function you need. Add light up, down and all around to create interest and the feeling of space. And thats something I really get buged about. Usually the room is so dark I cant tell the difference between lime green and black walls. Unless you're trying to make a statement with a dramatic, overstuffed couch in the room, your small space will probably feel better with moderately sized or even slightly smaller furnishings. It's all about scale. The apartments that actually look bigger with the furniture in them are those where the furnishings fit the space and yourself. Go ahead and use a full-size sofa, but pair it with a chair that has longer legs on it, as opposed to one that goes to the ground or has a skirt on it. Because most apartments are box-like, it's fun to add some curves like round tables and chairs with a curve and rugs that are either in shapes or adorned with shapes like spirals and dots. A carpet remnant that you have bound can work great. If your apartment came with stained or dark wall-to-wall carpeting, cover that up with a rug in a lighter hue, saying if your floor is carpet add a rug! Contrary to what you might think, small spaces don't have to forgo a bed with lots of linens and fabrics. Layers and an elegant mix of colors, prints and pillows can make a space seem airier and give depth to what is almost always one of the biggest pieces in the apartment. The layered look also equals luxe, and that's a small-space strategy in itself.

It's not the best but I am still practicing and learning (yes, I did go a little over the top with the Dry Grass for this pic.) :)

    Your example looks very excellent.

JALIDA GETS A 72 HOUR SUSPENSION FROM THIS WEBSITE. EA ACCUSES JALIDA OF
TRYING TO IMPERSONATE AN EA OFFICIAL ON THE FORUMS THROUGH A SIMPLE MESSAGE POST MADE UNDER JALIDAS ACCOUNT, SHOWING PERFECTLY WELL THAT IT WAS CREATED BY JALIDA, AND WAS A RESPONSE TO A MESSAGE THREAD AND WAS WRITTEN AS A JOKE, IT WAS ONLY EA WHO DIDN'T CATCH THE JOKE, WHAT PART OF "THANKS FOR SENDING US THE MAC AND CHEESE IT WAS YUMMY, BUT IT HURT MY TUMMY" DID THEY NOT GET?

ADVISE TO ALL OTHER SIMMERS, DONT BREATHE TOO HARD, DON'T TYPE FASTER THAN 3 WORDS PER HOUR, IF YOUR HAIR IS UP IN A BUN HUN, LET IT DOWN, IF YOU THINK YOU'VE WRITTEN A JOKE IN A THREAD THAT IS FULL OF JOKING AROUND, REMOVE IT, EA HAS NO SENCE OF HUMOR AND CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A JOKE AND URANUS.

THEY HAVE OBSCENE CENSORING OF WORDS THAT PUT MANY MINORITIES BACK INTO THE DARK AGES AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. HECK, IM EMBARRASED FOR THEM. IMAGINE IN THIS DAY AND AGE CENSORING WORDS LIKE POTTIE (AS IN, WHERE IS THE TODDLERS POTTIE) OR CENSORING THE WORD GAY (YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS, THEY MAY UNCENSOR IT NOW THOUGH AFTER THEY GOT ENOUGH FLACK).

I'M SINCERELY EMBARRASED TO OWN ANY EA TITLES AFTER THIS APPALLING TREATMENT OF ME ONE OF THEIR CONSUMERS.

I MAY COME BACK IN 72 HOURS, OR I MAY JUST STAY CLEAR OF THIS OVERZEALOUS CENSORED FORUM AND GO TO WHERE THE MODS AND ADMINS ACTUALLY WANT PEOPLE TO VISIT, SO IF I DON'T SEE ANY OF YOU ON HERE AGAIN, ASTA LA VISTA BABY. IT WAS FUN FOR A WHILE, BUT THE EA CENSOR BOARD AND CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT DOESN'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A JOKE AND THEIR NOSE HAS MADE THIS PLACE A VERY UNENJOYABLE PLACE TO VISIT AT THE MOMENT.

As for using trees, stick to trees that would be found in nature together. Where I live currently, Palm Trees are the "natural" tree, so we don't get a whole lot (actually none) of Palm trees on the same lot with Pine Trees, or Weeping Willows with Akaza trees.

Also (IMO) stick to either a formal garden or a casual garden, I really don't think that using the more formal bushes in the game look right when used next to or near to the more casual raggedy looking bushes.

Layer your flowers, one of the great things in TS3 (maybe earlier versions too, I just don't know) is the ability to layer flowers on top of each other, flowers like the iceplant and other low growing ground cover plants/flowers. When mixed and matched it gives for a very natural appearance.

These are very useful, and I'm only done with reading the first page. :-) I'm pretty amateur when it comes to architecture and interior design but I'm learning... ^-^

Glad we could help! The whole point of this was to help people with their building. I also hope it helps cut down on the number of plain, square houses on the exchange!

I was looking for this thread yesterday but in the end gave up (I forgot to bookmark it... :?)

While this isn't a building tip, I was going to say that it might be worth moving the hints and tips to the top post (if you can edit that post to add them in) so people can see them straight away instead of scrolling through the messages. Then if they have anything to add they can just add it on, since you seem to be doing a pretty good job of keeping all the new tips updated into the one place. :)

Please when doing advanced constrain floor elevation tricks on your lot. make sure that if a wall is slanted to the next wall. (ie. The garage foundation trick) the wall texture matches the slant. Using brick wall texture looks horrible. same with windowed pools.

That's a good idea. I was thinking about doing that earlier and I guess I'll do it now.

To skiptharock, I don't know if you can frame paintings because I have never tried a painting sim. :P Sorry. If anyone else knows, then feel free to answer!

Nevar, I'll add that one in!

Yes, you can frame paintings your sims made. Though there's just ONE type of frame, and some pictures look better without (personal taste ;))
You just have to hang it up, and then there's an option to frame it. (None to unframe as far as I remember)

Oh and another little deco-thing: mirror's aren't just for practicing speeches and checking your looks... use them to make a small room appear bigger and more decoprated, IF it fits your overall theme.

Okay guys, so I took the advice and switched the color guide's spot with the tips spot. Now you will find all of the tips right under the first post. I hope this makes it easier to read! Also, the color guide can now be found at the upper bottom of the first page. (Where the tips used to be!) :)

Okay Asante! I'll add that one in!
And thanks a bunch for helping out with that question. :D I thought you could, but I wasn't completely sure so I didn't want to say either way.

    -As we know, "Flat Lots" are more then dull.. you should try to add some natural curves to the layout of the land. I'm pretty sure this Tip had been posted but I'm just gonna say and show you;

Practice! Practice using your Raise/Lower/Smooth Terrain, practice makes perfect (I still have a long way to go..)

    Example:
    Screenshot-46.jpg

I'm not the best at explaining things so I typically like to follow up with some visuals :P
