Can't even get past creating a sim

I have had the game for 2 days now, have yet to get past the point of even creating a SIM without the game freezing my whole computer. Patches for the store, etc...need to be installed. Would be nice, if like in the olden days, the games worked from the get go when you get them from the store. What happened to that?!?!?!?! Gonna ask for my refund if I am not able to get past creating a sim one more time.
