@miklc: What you have built so far looks like it should be in Paris, Rome, or somewhere like that. Barnacle Bay doesn't really have the same "feel" to it. I would suggest if you want luxury, that you go "old" style (like a restored abbey) for the build and then make the interior luxurious. It should be a building that might have been on the island since the very early days, just before or shortly after the pirate era, when people were starting to take notice and settling there. Think of the back story of the island. Maybe an abbey was built then but fell into ruin, or maybe an old castle was abandoned. These could be renovated and turned into a library. Something like that. I'm sure you can imagine other scenarios, too.
Not that you can't do whatever you want in your own world ... you could turn the whole island into those mammoth luxury types of buildings, if you wish. But if you are building for other people to download, then you may want to appeal to a broader base of people, who are already in step with the current pirate theme.
As far as how to make buildings look attractive or have a certain appeal, it is probably best to look at pics of real buildings. You have to prime your imagination with possibilities, and the internet is full of them. Once you see all those pics, you'll have a head full of great ideas, and your own builds will be more to your liking.
In these pictures there are some gaps in the ceiling and it is really annoying me because it completely ruins the effect, is this a bug or something? How can I stop it from happening?
For the gaps in the building. Delete the roof tiles and replace them (with roof tiles). I found that worked for me. Don't know why it does it but it may take several times to get then all. Also, angle up from your build to see if you have those tiles, that are invisible otherwise to the naked eye except at this angle, and delete. Be careful to click those squares only sometimes they take on a life of their own. Good luck.
The yard is beautiful so I didn't touch it, just updated the interior decor. I used Dave Piece as my sim and he is a widower so it is decorated in somewhat of a bachelor pad style, lots of zebra and leapord (wink, wink).
Here, again, is Buccaneer Hut, with screenshots this time, LOL! This is Dave Piece's original home. I am using him as my sim for this remodel project and am moving him around alot. He's probably dizzy, LOL!

Very nice. The original interior is pretty hideous, yours is vastly improved.

Okay guys I am wondering whether anyone can offer me some advice, opinions and/or inspiration because I seem to be short of all of those at the moment :?
Sorry if this post isn't very clear I am quite tired at the moment, basically I am wanting suggestions on how I can improve this library and even examples of luxury libraries others have build as examples if you have any. I am far from a great builder but I really want to make something that I (and anyone else who would be interested) can add to their world
Did you use the same lot as the old library? It can mess up your game if you bulldoze your lot before removing the gravestone that EA put there.
It looks good overall, but I think you made it too big. It will be really hard to fill all that up with library stuff. You might want to go only 2 stories, and 2 sets of windows on each wing.
Oh yes I did, I bulldozed the old library and then started building the new one on the lot. What can happen? Thank you also for the feedback, I think your right about it being too big, I wanted it to be quite an imposing building from the outside but I think I may have gone a little overboard

amjoie thank you for your feedback it is much appreciated! I agree that the style of building doesn't really fit with a tropical, pirate island like Barnacle Bay I was pretty stuck on what styles of building would actually fit and I knew I wanted to go for something grand so I kind of just went with a whim, you have given me some ideas though, I like the sound of a converted Abbey, if I can achieve it that is. I am also wanting to build a Tudor style Tavern so I think I might leave the library for now and try creating that, then I may continue with this library but place it in another world and start from scratch
I can't wait to see what other people create, I am already loving some of the stuff that has already been shared

Thank you so much for the tip, so do you mean the actual tiles on the roof of the building or as in the tiles above that specific floor. It is so annoying because it completely ruins the effect but never mind at least it can be resolved...hopefully
Gothique - Vampire Lounge. Drinking, dancing, pool, DJ, gyro-sphere. Also works as a Fusion Lounge or Exclusive Lounge. No CC. Lots of store items. Designed for Barnacle Bay @ 15 Wanderer's Way.
I did the interior with the environment in mind. The dining room has a bambo
focal wall.
The ajoining living room has the same bambo as a trim at the top with grasscloth wallpaper underneath. The couch and matching chairs are in a linen-type fabric and the rug is jute.
My favorite way to remodel a house is to leave it in the original "footprint" so to speak, then just update the interiors. But this time I moved the living room wall out a bit to break up the straight line of the front of the house. I also shrunk the kitchen and the bathroom. The kitchen is on the small side, but the bathroom retains its original tub AND seperate shower combination. This makes it seem more luxurious. All it needs is Rubber Duckey

Looks good. One way to add on to an existing house is to add a second floor, either full or partial. A lot of people do that in real life even. You just have to find a good place to put the stairs.
And you know you can buy a Rubber Duckey & Bubble Bath soap in Debugbuy, right?

Both of them can now be bought at the grocery store . There is a house picture at the top of the choices, next to produce and meat. With Generations you can buy flowers, birthday cake, bubble bath, and rubber duckey.
Sometimes I do put second floors. Since this is for Barnacle Bay, and there is a spiral staircase, I should do that for one of these remodels...hhmmmmm...
I designed this to be a summer rental home. Casual furniture and a neon orange and green color theme are fun. There is a flattened roof to relax on and take in the ocean view. A telescope for watching the locals, and easel for painting the ocean are there, too.

But if you use Debugbuy, you can do it while you're building the house, w/o having a sim move in and buy stuff.
I'm still irked about that staircase. I bought Barnacle Bay about a month before the staircase and the other things were added. They did allow us to get some of the other "bonus items" but not the staircase. I still haven't got it.
This is the same lot as Strongbeard Manor I posted on the previous page, but upgraded. Upgrades to appliances and lots of paintings all over. Many more store items from the Steampunk and Looking Glass sets.

For the invisible/ghost tile delete only them. For the roof missing parts. Delete the tiles in the area of the roof that do not show from below (like in the picture) and then replace with new roof tiles. Delete a few tiles at a time to experiment and watch the ceiling fill in.
You know what is fun? Using the subways to connect the main island to the lighthouse and the off beach island. You can also use dive wells and teleportation pads.

i never thought of this....will be doing that tomorrow!

How do you use a dive well to connect to a different lot?
Is it just the names? I've used them within the same lot, but never tried different ones.
Ready to move back into Strongbeard Manor, it's the Strongbeard Family!
Sam (short for Samson) Strongbeard is the strongest man in Barnacle Bay. Along with his wife Lavendar and their daughter Ruby, they live in Strongbeard Manor.
