Can you change the color of a roof?

This is my first attempt ever at building a house in the sims. I can't figure out how to recolor the roof. It keeps saying "cannot be altered" or something like that, but I don't see why it can't be recolored... please help!

There are some default settings for colors under 'Roof Colors'.

You can also download cc colors.

In addition to what Ashleyadorble (love that name, Lol) said, you can make flat roofs and pretty much paint it anything you like, like the first photo below. If you prefer something more then a flat roof, you can make slanted roofs like the second photo below.
