What's the Point in Film Work Opportunities?

OK, so one of my sims is in the film career and keeps getting offered opportunities to work. For example, handing out flyers at the local club or researching a rival movie etc. I've carried out a few of these now but can't see that I've gained anything at all. No financial reward, no job performance, nothing. In fact, because I'm carrying out the opportunity instead of being at work I'm actually losing because I'm not improvnig my performace and working toward promotion. So what's the point? Am I missing something?

Yup, I did this about twice after LN came out and never again.
