GlenDonnach - The Scottish Highlands (UPLOADED)

After a lot of experimenting, I finally decided to question my long-held belief that the visual style of the sims 3 does not lend well to the portrayal of Scottish houses. Thus, I have created a brand new world based on the lush countryside of my home country.

screenshot_original.jpg

It is a large map which covers an expanse of Scottish countryside, featuring a distillery, railway line, small villiage and plenty of farms and ancient structures. The world and all the lots have been be made by myself to give the world as much character as possible.

SPEC: I have aimed to make it to the best standards as possible, including spawners and many hidden areas. It does not contain any any custom content other than the rabbit holes (see below).

- It will need Riverview, World Adventures and Ambitions to work.

- Functionality for most rabbit holes relies on the use of Jynx's rabbit hole doors (most rabbit hole buildings are WAY too big for scotland in my opinion!!). They can be downloaded here: http://customsims3.com/forums/thread-53.html

As a side note, the world takes advantage of Simsample and GiLaNg's unlocked neighbourhood objects (which show up fine if you have ambitions) Thanks should also go to Regina at bogsims.com and MrCrumplebottom1 for some of the road textures.

Here are some more pics:

SAVE GAME FILE: Includes 18 households, each fully detailed with flavour texts, bios and relationships. Get it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?84d5ewqxz1n9l4j To install, just download, unzip it and place in your documents/electronic arts/sims3/saves folder.

PERFORMANCE NOTES: The World has been playtested for two sim weeks with little issue. There are a few minor routing irregularities which have either been fixed in the save file or are unavoidable due to the small nature of the houses etc. The bare world (but not savegame) is missing some lot descriptions. Needless to say, if any issues arise please don't hesitate to inform me.

Thank you very much and I hope you enjoy the world :D

    Very nice so far Doublemedion694.
It already reminds me of Strathspey, Dalwhinnie or maybe Blair Atholl in Perthshire.
I`m Scottish, so it`s an extra special world

    It's lovely, doublemedion :D

I love the textures and how warm it feels. Also those traintracks, reminds me of where I live as there are abandoned tracks all over the fields and such. I'm sure this'll be a huge hit like Constant Springs

And yes, I'd love to see more!

Very nice indeed. I'm from Scotland, Edinburgh to be specific and I do see a resemblance to the countryside area. :-)

I don't know how big your world would be, but having an area resembling the highlands would be quite nice. The browns of the heather are quite unique, and some of the mountains near the Isle of Skye look like the 14,000 foot peaks in the Rockies.

It would be interesting to include some Brochs, stone circles, glyph stones and similar artifacts. A Broch would be a real simple meshing project -- basically two cylinders. A ruined broch would be a little more work But, all in all, could be made in less than an hour.

I agree that the Southern California architecture of the Sims does not scream "Scotland."

Looks amazing, you've clearly given your terrain a lot of love, and the train track over the road looks very nice. I must learn how to do that! Hopefully they will release a Seasons EP soon so you can get the rain as well ;)

Best of luck with your build and please do keep us updated!

Yes, I've got to admit that the absence of appropriate pine trees (and silver birches!!!) is causing me some annoyance. Nevertheless the spruce and junipers are doing a fine job standing in for now.

And yes Johnnywr! the strathspey area is my main source of inspiration.

You are doing a fine job so far in recreating a Strathspey-like part of Scotland. The distillery idea is brilliant, I love it. Strathspey is whisky country 8)

I love how this is turning out!

I toured Scotland with my choir in high school and it was an amazing experience. Everything was so beautiful and the people I met were exceedingly friendly. I am definitely visiting again one day. I really like the way your distant hills look and your use of the train tracks.

Ooooh...I like it like it! (sorry, the Rhianna song has been on the radio at work mega-times lately). It looks like you have done an awesome job blending in the distant terrain which is so difficult isn't it?

Double, you are a master at creating worlds ... and you back them up with an intriguing history and interesting lots. Good stuff. I think the sculpting and trees and town layout in this world look quite realistic. Can't wait to see more!

Okay, here's some more pics. There's not been too much progress but I thought I'd show some more of the details I have already done.

At the moment I am working on all the surrounding hills - which is much easier than usual since they're all farmland :D

Oh wow, this is really beautiful! Love the colors and as others have remarked, the "rolling hills", as well as the buildings you have added so far; it's all very charming and quite lovely! I'll definitely have to keep an eye on your progress.
