Stairs Question?

I know that you can make stairs that turn by dragging them in the direction you want them to turn while placing them on the ground outside. My question is can you do this inside? I hate making straight stairs because they take so much room, I hope someone knows of a way.

Its something i wish could be possible as i miss the appartment life spiral stair case.
I also find the stairs in TS3 takes up more room than TS2 ... is this true?
I ask as i note that the possition of walls above the stairs have to be quite far back and allow what i believe more open and unusable floor for the sims to walk up the stairs.
