Patching: What is the difference?

In the Ambitions disc, there is a file called "TS3_1.12.70.00600x_Update.exe" (where x means 1,2,3,5 or 7). Will it update my game to 1.12 if I have version 1.1 of the base game?
What is the difference between this file and cumulative patching?
The file is found in "Sims3EP02\Support\Updates".

The Ambitions disc contains base game patches that will bring it up to version 1.12 - this is convenient when reinstalling your games. After patching, the base game would only need the 1.14 incremental patch to be fully updated and in synch with Ambitions version 4.2.3, either via the launcher or via a manual update.
