What on earth am I missing?

So, I create a family and I play a bit and save and quit.

Next time I come on the game, I see my family's file as "The Smith Family" and I click on it. I am lost as to how i am supposed to switch to another family in the same town. Can I only play one family per saved game? How can I play multiple houses in one town?

go to edit town

and change the active family.

On the menu bar when your in edit town mode. On the left side above the options button you should see a button that says change active family or something like that.
