Do Cars Matter?

«13
This is turning into a series . . . So some simmers can't stop talking about how much they want cars, others are bored with the topic. Where do you stand? Which aspect of cars do you care about? On the one hand you have drivability, i.e. the ability to drive your car around the neighborhood. On the other hand, you have parked car interactions: making out, woohoo, listening to the radio, napping, etc. If we have a drivable car without parked interactions it would basically be like an Island Living water scooter, except that it goes on roads instead of water. If we have parked car interactions without drivability, I imagine this being like a fixer-upper car that, once it's fixed up and painted, you can use it for woohoo and naps and all that, but it still doesn't run well enough to drive.
-No, my almost-elderly mother, I don't think it's a good time for you to try for a baby.
-Yes, person I barely know, you have my blessing to hang out with Johnny Zest.
-No person with the mean, hot-headed and self-absorbed traits, I don't think you should get married.

Why give us cars that you can't drive to other lots? I don't want open world driving, TS2 style loading screen kind of driving is fine and preferable, but no driving at all is just weird.

I know I'll be in the minority, but I don't miss cars in the game. Cars are not a big part of my life. I've never owned one; it's kind of a hassle in a big city like mine where just parking a car almost anywhere costs money. I drive a Communato (car-sharing) once in a while, and take cabs/Ubers sometimes, but most of the time I walk or take transit.

It would be nice to have cars in the game that are drivable with parked interactions but for right now, it's not like I need them at the moment. The team will add them eventually and we'll just have to be patient until then. 🤞

I would enjoy having cars in the game, since I think not having them does impact the realism-especially as someone from the midwest, a lot of my life involves around driving since nothing is walkable here. It would be another way to spend money (yes, I do think the money system is too easy in the sims 4) on the cars themselves and also maintenance. Cars could allow for new careers like taxi driver or repairing cars. That said, at this point I think it is unlikely that cars will ever be added to the sims 4. A lot of the worlds aren't really optimized for them and they don't fit in as well in the closed-world system. There are other additions such as further improvements to personalities, more outdoor activities, and preteens that I would like more.

Cars would be sweet, but we're already in too deep with The Sims 4 that I really doubt they'll be optimized for literally anything in that game. At most, I imagine they'll be drivable on only one world. Every other world? Just there to rust and collect dust.

Not having cars in the game have bothered me since day 1 when the game was released.

Without it neighborhoods and lots feel like movie sets, the solution of having sims fading away into nothing have always looked bad in my opinion or when sims like firemen appear out of thin air.

It doesn't feel like you are traveling anywhere and it also makes it unnecessary complicated if you want to build lots with garages or parking lots. There are plenty of cars driving around in the neighborhoods but we can't own one ourselves?

I voted ‘Need drivable cars, would be nice if they have parked interactions’. As I think if cars did ever come, the focus would be on the driving status than when it’s not moving.

More likely the car will go in a Sim’s inventory and you click on it in there. The car will probably teleport to the road with the Sim inside and drive off.

No teleportation and TS3 style cars, please. We saw with bikes, how they like to take them out of their inventories while still inside buildings and park them next to the couch when they get home. I don't want the same thing to happen with the cars. They need to have their designated parking spaces and ideally should be able to drive in and out of the lot, and sims should be able to open doors and get inside.

The animations for cars is more complex so I can’t see the actual parking and opening doors etc being done 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️. Bikes are smaller and I know people who bring theirs indoors.

I do miss TS2 cars for the reason of parking and getting in and out, as I play TS3 more I’m more used to the car system in there.

I never had a problem with cars in previous games, but now realize how much car travel and the open, but closed off, world limited my gameplay in TS3. I spent way too much time watching my sim run up a hill to a road, get into his car/taxi, drive to his destination, spend a few minutes there, then repeat the process to go home. Loading screens are actually a faster way to get on with my story, for me. Drivable cars make sense in an open world, but we don’t even have open neighborhoods in TS4. Sometimes, you have to go through a loading screen to get across the street. Plus, with the ability to travel between worlds in TS4, drivable cars would seem to be unrealistic at times. I mean, if you’re traveling from Willow Creek to Sulani, are you really going to drive there, or would you be taking a boat or plane? I also think some world aesthetics are more appealing without a lot of cars and the trappings of ultra modern life, like Sulani, Selvadorada, and HoB. Now if we could just ramp down that cell phone use, as well!

It seems to me that fully drivable cars would require a major revamp of the game, or would be so limited that they’re useless. If they are just parked in your driveway with a driving animation before a loading screen, that’s fine, but I would feel it’s unnecessary. Interactive parked car objects would be less disruptive to our games, but I doubt that would satisfy many car enthusiasts. For those who want them, I hope EA finds a way to give them cars that won’t change the overall game too much. And, if they do implement them, I hope they’re in a travel type pack of their own, and not part of a base game update. I like my game just fine without them.

these poll options are making my head spin  hopefully I clicked right

I want to be able to drive around some neighborhoods where it makes sense but more than anything if we do get cars there should be gameplay and interactions to do with the car
its not just about go from place a to place b

and yeah maybe its not like top want on my list for the game but i feel like it would just make all these suburban lawns bit more interesting to have some cars to build or whatever

The only time I ever liked cars was in TS2, when sims could restore the hot rod. Once Bon Voyage gave Sims the ability to walk to work instead of having to call a taxi, I was done with cars. I had sims who cycled in Sims 3, but never wasted space or money on a car. Blame it on my desire to live in a walkable community where I don't need a car...kind of like the one I lived in college!

If we never get cars I won't be upset, but it would be nice to have them for simmers that want them.

If/when they come I don't think they'll be drivable, at least not in older worlds, but it'd be a nice hobby for mechanically inclined sims to fix up and hang out in.

(Going off topic, I hope if this is added to the game it will be it's own skill and not just a part of handiness, although it should also level that skill up as well).

I've hated the way Sims 4 sims poof everywhere - want a normal way of traveling that seems plausible for all the worlds, and that's cars. And possibly helicopters and buses.

I'd like cars in the game. I won't be sad if we never get them, but I'd like them. I'm actually neutral on drivable or not. It would be cool in some worlds, but others just aren't set up for it (or only parts are) and I can see some reasons why having drivable cars wouldn't be practical.

But if we get them, they have to at least have parked interactions, because otherwise I can just go into Debug and use the ones we already have in game if they're just decor. Let our sims fix them up, soup them up, wash them, woo hoo in them, and use them as a means of opening the world map, and I'll be perfectly content.

Being able to enter a kind of "create a car" and detail them would be a very cool bonus, but I'm so not holding my breath. (But oh, the 80s rocker vans...)

@crocobaura I agree with you about open world driving being an underwhelming feature. For driving into a loading screen, I just don't see the appeal. Now I was playing Sims 2 back in olden times when the loading screens lasted 20 minutes, so I'm a lot more chill about Sims 4 loading screens than some other players are. I'm still not eager to add even more time to the process by tacking a repetitive animation to the beginning of it. Not only that, but it would take up Sim time, not just player time.

About the non-driving cars. I can see this making sense in the context of, let's say, a DIY pack. I got this idea from @LeGardePourpre 's "Man Pack" thread. Don't like the idea of branding DIY/mechanical hobbies that way, but the actual game play ideas sounded fun. This pack could expand on the things you can do with the handiness skill, perhaps introduce some minor DIY hobby skills like kite making. It could introduce a freelance Handy career similar to the Paranormal Investigator career. It could also introduce a number of buildable objects, sort of like the tree house. One such buildable item could be a vintage car. Let's say, from the 60s or earlier. Not sure how old a car has to be to be vintage, my father's a lot more fluent on this topic than I am, but you could have things like a a Deusy, a Roadster, a 1940s Rolls Royce, a Thunderbird. Once you've tinkered with it and polished it up, you could use it for parked car interactions, but it wouldn't be safe to ride on the street.

@DaWaterRat suggested the non-driving cars could be used for transportation in a way similar to City Living elevators. When you click on them one of the options is "Travel" which transports you to the world map. It's more efficient than looking through your phone. It would be convenient if you could do this from a non-apartment lot by clicking on a car.

Well, since there will be loading screens regardless of whether you are on foot or in a car, then this issue is not really an issue. As for adding extra time, it's not different to riding a bike or a horse. People who enjoy that can have them in their game, those who don't can continue walking to lots. Drivable cars could be used to drive on large lots, teens could practice their parking skill and such. If they add a racetrack to the neighbourhood, sims could even possibly participate in a car race or maybe drifting. Also, it would be nice if sims could open a garage and have sims bring their cars in to be fixed, cleaned or upgraded. For this you would need drivable cars and it would offer so much more gameplay than a static object that you just admire once you've finished the one time restoration.

    I don't know what to click ^^'
And I'm not sure if the cars EA would add would add to our gameplay.
We already achieved a lot with the buydebug cars (without mods/cc/poses).
We can (pretend to) repair them or wash them or drive somewhere...
Where would we drive to anyway in these little neighborhoods? Getting in the car just to drive to the next house is a little unpractical imo and the main reason why we don't have functional cars yet.

Would be nice to have drivable cars with parked interactions
I'm just going to say this once. We had cars in Sims2 that had parked interactions. In Sims3 we could drive them. Now, they zoom by and through our Sims on the roads in front of our lots but our Sims can't drive 'em and they don't have parked interactions, either. Bicycles are a mess, sometimes going through the lot. I'm nearly afraid to get cars, but I would enjoy them. Would also be great if our Teens could work on one, as they could in the past. I currently have two Teen boys in my save. A third son, the eldest is just now a YA. He would most likely help his younger brothers work on the rambling wreck that would sit in the garage. I can also imagine him wishing to take his best girl out on a date in his own nice, shiny, fully drivable vehicle. The kid is of some high fame magnitude. A sports car comes to mind.
