Creating a Sci-fi save

«1
Hey everyone. I usually play in one main save with aging off, but lately, I've been wanting to create a sci fi save. I'm thinking along the lines of: each world could be considered a "planet" with a specific type of architecture and/or people/aliens living there. Has anyone done anything like this? I know there are some people that play historical saves, and, while I've never done that, I'd think a sci-fi save would be quite similar, possibly easier. I do use mods and cc, but after a few quick google searches, there doesn't seem to be as much cc for futuristic/sci-fi stuff as there are for historical. Because of this, I am considering doing a sort of "it's the future/another planet but it's not that different from present day earth" kind of setting, but I'd really rather make everything at least somewhat unique and unusual. (that's the fun part after all) I'm thinking I can use Lot51's fashion authority mod to dress everyone (including the townies) for each "planet"

Some worlds, I'm a little unsure what to do with. Mostly worlds like Copperdale, Willow Creek, and Henford On Bagley that don't really fit with the sci fi theme.

I may never finish this, as I've tried creating a fantasy save before and stopped after placing like three houses from the gallery, but this is something that's been on my mind for a while, and I think I'd be cool once I finished it (and fun to work on as well, as I'm definitely more of a sci-fi kind of guy than a fantasy kind of guy)

Do you think this would work? Any suggestions? Are there any potential problems I'm overlooking?

    I don’t have a full sci fi save. My save is a fantasy save with some sci-fi elements. I have a Sixam Alien outpost parked in Strangerville and another one in Oasis Springs along with a training camp for alien hunters. There was also a Men in Black type unit operating out of a high tech warehouse in Willow Creek. I say “was” because they were sacrificed when my save got corrupted and had to be migrated. I also have the 10th Doctor parked in HoB. All of my aliens, except the Doctor, are trying to fly under the radar, so their homes fit in with their surroundings but are high tech/ futuristic on the inside. Although, The Doctor does have a quaint little cottage in HoB with the Tardis parked out back.

    Basically, my game is separated into the human sim world and a magical realm called the Myst. Everything is set in modern times. I group game worlds into one of these two larger worlds and use mods to control who can travel where. I think you could do something similar with your game and have a futuristic type world alongside a less developed world or even a post apocalyptic, Mad Max type world. Group the game worlds where they are best suited and work out their relationship to each other. In my game, The Myst was created as a refuge when magical creatures got tired of being hunted and persecuted by humans, so there’s an adversarial relationship between the two lands.

    Anyway, I think your idea is doable. I hope you’ll share more when you get it done.

    I think scifi often takes cultural inspiration or inspirations from architectural styles that already exist

    kind of like retrofitting existing home with the new things future has to offer or things you need to survive the future or whatever

    for example there could be some normal homes but maybe the air quality has gone really bad so they built domes around them

    maybe there is old mansion with just gadgets everywhere

    or maybe there was a say a old barn but scientist bought it to work on strange futuristic projects

    or perhaps there was a castle until it was coated in all the modern technology and such after being taken over by aliens

    there is lots of possible combinations

    i also think school is rather good place for dystopia + scifi theme like maybe AI took over maybe it was zombies maybe robots who knows many possibilities so many possibilities

    i do tend to lean more historical myself but ive been kind of eyeing Newcrest for some futurism myself if i could just get working :lol:

    Another thing, there are a lot of Steam Punk resources for builds and CC. Worlds that don’t fit your more futuristic style might be able to go that direction.

    The idea of a Sci-fi save sounds great. I once tried to rebuild oasis springs in a sci-fi theme but never managed to get it finished. I might return to it some day.

    By now we have so many worlds from so many packs, that rebuilding everything is very much work. I would begin by starting (or downloading) a completely empty blank save with no buildings and just focus on one world or a few neighbourhoods to rebuild and leave the rest blank. I would focus on those worlds or neighbourhoods with few decorations like oasis springs or the island in Windenburg (just this one neighbourhood without background buildings). Another route could be to go for really modern looking neighbourhoods like the uptown financial district in San mychuno or the foxbury campus in britechester. You can change the lot type of the dorms and use it as a penthouse lot, just like the ones from San mychuno.

    For builds there are quite a few nice assets in get to work and strangerville. If you like a more dystopian grunge vibe also journey to batuu

    For gameplay I find useful things in
    get to work
    - inventions in the science career
    - aliens
    get famous
    - the sleeping pod. If only we had a matching toddler pod
    discover university
    - servos
    - robotic arm and exo skeleton
    - various household robots robots
    eco lifestyle
    - the fabricator as a way to create objects, if I am informed correctly it even allows to make one food recipe if you unlock it
    - the tech looking planter

    I once saw an episode of Star Trek where Picard when to visit his brother on Earth. His brother lived on the family farm that was very traditional looking. What if the future is not shiny? What if wide swaths of people reject or do not have access to shiny? What if people in the future move through time as well as space just like they move between worlds in Sims? What happens to each world? What stays the same and what changes?

    CC is grouped narrowly. I agree with Cyncie to look at the Steam Punk themed items. Steam Punk would look great in Henford on Bagley. Keep an open mind about what might be available within other themes. I'd look in the camping, dystopian, and loft stuff. I bet there might be a few things in the 70's stuff, like a lava lamp.

    CopperDale could become a giant retro theme park. Instead of trying to change it, make it a giant tourist attraction like a Disney Park.

    In Las Vegas, there are themed residential areas that have been built to look like different parts of the country. People are forced to move to Las Vegas for work, but don't want to be there. When they drive through the locked gates of their home neighborhood, they enter what looks like a different state. There are very strict rules about what plants are allowed so the theme is not disrupted. These places consume huge amounts of water because home owners are forbidden to plant things that survive easily there and are forced to maintain a certain number of plants listed on a short list of approved plants. I can imagine in the future that there will be even more themed gated residential communities.

    Get famous also has the sci-fi space station set and light swords. Can combine nicely with Batuu stuff. I think he could play in any world if he adds a common sci-fi twist to the lots, like robots and servos, landing pads for space crafts on the roofs, green house pods for gardening or living in, etc. It doesn't have to be that far in the future that all traces of current lifestyle have been completely erased.

    Great suggestions everyone! Thanks so much for the ideas!

    @cyncie
    That's a really cool way to set up a save! I'm wanting to do something similar. I've worked on it some a few weeks ago, just sort of planning out the general ideas of a few worlds. One of the ideas I had was to make some cyberpunk type abandoned factory areas areas in both evergreen harbour (the area near the docks) and the upper-left neighborhood in Del Sol Valley (where Vanessa Jeong lives). I'm picturing the big, futuristic mansions in the upper right neighborhood are home to the rich sims who don't even really know that the cyberpunk area is there. I'll probably use an eco lifestyle mod I found to make the air dirty in the abandoned areas.

    I'm planning to, if possible, have my aliens not wear their disguises most of the time, since in this future world I'm planning to have different "planets" (worlds or combinations of worlds) Maybe I could have some areas where the aliens prefer to, or are encouraged to wear their disguises because the people in those areas are still getting used to seeing aliens everywhere.

    Also I looked and there does seem to be a good variety of steam punk stuff. Thanks!

    @Simmingal
    That's a great idea to mix and match historical and futuristic! Henford on Bagley would work especially well with this idea. Perhaps it could be a town/planet that still tries to stay traditional, but they are having to adapt to modern times. I like the idea of a castle, maybe the world could still be ruled by a monarchy. Maybe their technology could be less advanced than other places, and perhaps their focus could be on farming (I believe there are some alien plants that sims can grow)

    @Atreya33
    That sounds like a good way to approach it. I tend to get easily distracted and jump from one thing to another often. I agree that it would be best to go world by world and to only use a few worlds, ant least to begin with. Some places, I'll likely just download some futuristic lots from the gallery, but if I want a particular theme for a world, then I'll likely build it myself. I'm not much of a builder, mostly I renovate what I find on the gallery. For this save, I'm going to give it a try, especially since if I make a mistake or something turns out kind of quirky, I can just say "But it's a sci-fi world! It's supposed to look like that" lol. I never thought of sims living at the university dorm lots, but that would add another city-like area (the game is quite lacking in modern city areas, in my opinion)

    Also, thanks for the list of objects. I'll probably use most of them for my save. Unfortunately, I don't have strangerville or Batuu (the two best packs for sci-fi) but I'll look for some similar cc.

    @Katofhyrule12
    I haven't seen that episode (I've mostly only seen the original Star Trek series), but that's a great idea! As I mentioned to Simmingal, I'm thinking of doing this with Henford On Bagley. As far as Copperdale, I would have never thought of using it as a theme park, but I can see that working out really well! I'll probably add some rental houses for sims to stay in, and some themed lots for sims to visit.

    That's interesting about Las Vegas. That gave me the idea to do something like that with Willow Creek. It could be a very exclusive area that has been designed after historical towns on earth, and is known for being a sort of traditional town with lots of gardens and parks where, as you mentioned, the sims who are more traditional and don't like the modern places live. Maybe there are strict guidelines in place where everyone has to be very environmentally friendly and keep up the neighborhood and such. I'm already looking forward to designing it!

    @crocobaura
    I do plan to have lots of robots and servos in my worlds. I think that most people would have at least one robot in the future. (if real technology continues to advance, it may not be that long until we actually have robots in our homes.) I wouldn't have thought about putting landing pads on the roofs, but I'll likely do that (or put them in place of the garage for smaller houses. The save will probably be set close enough to the present day where the furniture and such look the same as it does today, since it would be hard to find futuristic furniture cc for everything.

    I'll likely work on my save some today. I'll post a few pictures when I get some work done. Any more ideas or thoughts are more than welcome!

    I have a SciFi Game Save. It’s called
    Futuristic 2525& Beyond. I created it over 4 years ago. I use my Foxfury Science Tree (University Pack) for my Futuristic landscapes . I also use alot of Get to Work/Strangerville/Batuu Pack objects as well as the hidden Get Famous SciFi objects for my builds.
    My households are from Doctor Who to Star Wars to Voyager. I also have a lot of Hybrids thanks to the Occults. I so wish I could show my Futuristic Worlds. However I do have them all saved in the Gallery under my username SEREFRAS.🚀🛸

    In the Original Star Trek series, they often ended up visiting planets and in some cases they were very much like Earth. One in particular was even visited by previous Starfleet Captains who so badly violated the Prime Directive, that the inhabitants of that planet took a book on the history of mob families to heart. And designed their society after such. Hits often occurred from each side. It was really hysterically funny to see Captain Kirk, Spock and the landing party sort it all out and return things as best they could to the proper timeline for that planet's development.

    All this to say, that you can get away with dwellings that aren't all that futuristic in design. Have fun! And I hope when you are ready to read your story updates. I am, after all, GalacticGal. ;)

    I love juxtaposition. I think your sci-fi world will be so much more interesting because of the juxtaposition of the old and the new.

    I would add a library and lots of books to your areas that are meant to be retro. Books are quickly becoming antiques. In my area, all the bookstores that sell new books are gone. All we have left are used bookstores stocking books that are less and less current each year. The last time I went the used bookstore, I cried. Used was not old a few years ago. Now all used books are old books.

    If you are using CC, there are mods for a newspaper box and a magazine rack.

    I guess in contrast, your modern libraries would be all computers with maybe a single room with rare artifacts for any books, and a restricted door that only let certain people into it.

    In Bermuda, there were no cars until WW2. The US Army built a base there and forced Bermuda to allow cars onto the island if they wanted the protection afforded by the base. Before that there were only trolley cars and horses. Not because the island was poor! There was a strict ban on a technology that the island did not want there.

    The Amish and Mennonites continue to ban certain types of technology while embracing others. They love plastic and they prefer synthetic fabrics to natural fabrics. Will you have religions?

    With advancement, there are always people left behind. Where will those people live? and in what conditions? What is the history between now and your future? Was there war? Plague? Or has man gotten kinder and smarter and more benevolent? What percentage of people were left behind? Are income levels fairly equal, or is there a very small elite class? Do the elite restrict access to technology for the masses? Or is there some other barrier than prevents some people from having access to certain technologies?

    Can lots be merely changed from residential to museums?

    Living Museums are interesting. Plimoth Plantation is gone, but that was a great living museum. There were families that worked there for generations and their children grew up on the site dressed in historical clothing and living in the houses during the day. I have sometimes wondered what some of those children thought when they were young.

    Maybe you could leave some lots untouched, but in your head think of them as part of a large living museum.

    You could make holidays that required visiting them as if they were museums? Plimoth Plantation was packed at Thanksgiving. A nearby railroad museum was packed at Christmas.

    I've seen that episode before! I had forgotten about it, though. If I remember correctly, they had cars from that era as well. I remember Kirk had quite a hard time trying to drive one. I might end up doing something similar with Windenburg's Old Town. Maybe the residences there could live life like it's in the past.

    I may end up posting a few story updates once I finish it (I've thought about doing that with my main save more than a few times, (and did post a few recently) but I'm never certain how long I'll stick with a story, and wouldn't want to leave everyone in the middle of it. (When it comes to consistent story updates, I would be considered a non-committal sim :# )

    What happens if you turn every lot in a world to offgrid with story progression on?
  • Options
    MrPlumbobMrPlumbob Posts: 347 Member
    @Katofhyrule12 A Historical Library is a great idea. I do agree that books are getting fewer and fewer these days. Though from what I've seen, books seem to be quite popular with young adults like myself, at least where I live. I'll probably add a library in Willow Creek, where I'm planning a more historical town. I like the idea of having restrictions on technology.

    As for history, my idea is that this save in set not only in the future, but in space. Each world, being its own planet, would have its own history. Humans have developed ways of warp speed travel and have colonised other planets. Most of the planets will probably be sort of a mix of aliens and humans, since I can't really control what kind of townies generate. (though I do plan on controlling their clothes through a mod) There will definitely be varying income levels. I intend to use Evergreen Harbour and the starter neighborhood in Del Sol Valley for the lower class sims, who tend to use older, more cyberpunk style technology.

    A living museum is another great idea! There is one near where I live that I've visited before. I hadn't thought about holidays, but in addition to the normal holidays, like Christmas and Thanksgiving, I could also add some alien holidays as well. Visiting a living museum on holidays is a good idea too. You could even add an "Earth History Day" holiday.

    I hardly use the off the grid trait, and I usually don't use story progression since I play with aging off most of the time, but I think that would be interesting to try.

    You really have some fascinating ideas!

    I play with aging off and story progression on. I never thought that might be an odd combination, until reading that you treat them as a combined on/off. Your way makes a lot more sense! LOL.

    I have been playing Sims 3 lately, but maybe I will turn on Sims 4 and leave it running all night to see what happens if I leave a world of Sims to autonomously deal with the power going off.

    Well, having these ideas and and actually playing out the ideas are two very different things. That's the part I always have trouble with. As for story progression, how you set story progression is of course up to you, but I've never thought about turning it on with aging off. It would be interesting to me to try it your way. I know there are settings for the neighborhood stories that allow you to change different things as well.

    What keeps me from doing more worlds like this is, that it just not fits anywhere because of the objects in the worlds we can't remove.

    Well, I just went weird again in my Futuristic 2525 & Beyond Game Save. After I finally got my Chestnut Ridge to look sortof futuristic thanks to my Foxfury Science Tree (University Pack), I got my new Futuristic Cowgirl named Star Hybridcree & her blue/white Futuristic Country Ranch in the 50X50 lot, I decided to go a bit weird with my build. So, I made sure she had the Rocketship an alien mushroom plant & of course a dormant Strangerville plant. Oh & I duplicated her & made her otherself her Daughter named Starla Hybridcree. Now, to figure out how to make an interstellar horse or two. Lol :D:p

    @SERVERFRA That sounds cool! I'd like to see a picture of that ranch! I don't have the horse pack, but I do know you can paint the horses like you can the cats and dogs. I looked at your gallery yesterday, and you have some really cool builds on there! I especially like the space landscapes you made with the university trees. They look like a futuristic city!

    In my apocalyptic save I've converted Willow Creek to a steampunk hood with residents and retail lots to fit the theme. As mentioned previously there are great lots on the Gallery for steampunk buildings. This is one place where no one lives in tents.

    @rudolpha Steampunk would work really well in Willow Creek as well.

    Speaking of lots from the Gallery, I've been looking through some futuristic/space lots on the gallery and I have found some really amazing ones!
    This is one of the homes I found on the gallery. For some reason, the stairs were missing when I downloaded it, so I replaced them with some elevators using the Uplifting Elevators cc by Ravasheen.

    I've been creating a family of aliens in CAS this morning, and I've just realised something about my sci-fi save. I'm going to have to name all of my aliens myself if I want them to have futuristic/alien names. I'm used to just using the name randomizer for most of my sims. Some of the aliens could have human names, since there are both humans and aliens living in the world, but I'd like many of them to have unique futuristic names.
    This is the first alien family I've created for my sci-fi save. (they are still a work in progress, including their names.)

    Thank you so much for the wonderful compliments of my futuristic builds
    @MrPlumbob . I really did enjoy remaking my worlds. I so do wish I could show them in the forum unfortunately I don’t know how to, that’s why I usually just mention my builds & households that are saved in the Gallery.
    However once in a while I do share a screenshot in my avatar of my sims or a lot or even one of my worlds. (FYI: I only play vanilla, so I depend on my packs/kits & my own unusual imagination.🧐😛🤪😉
