This topic has always been a sensitive spot among the gamers, even though the Sims4 never had any sort of attraction system. So unless you're a designer, spending hours in the character creator is totally pointless. Even if you manage to create the sim of your life, it will remain completely unnoticed by the other npcs. Here the relationship is roughly based on whether you can manage your sims to get into a flirty/romance mood or not. Maybe it's not so unrealistic, the basic idea isn't too bad, but this method completely ignores the external appearance of all sims. There are mods with attraction systems, but let's face it, none of them achieved the expected effect.
My idea is actually extremely simple, and I'm not even sure it would work, but maybe a modder has already created it, just I don't know about that. But before I get to that, let's look back a bit at the previous games' attraction systems.
The Sims2's chemistry system was mostly based on your sim's turns on/off list. All of your characters could have a maximum of 3 types of ideal traits to which they were able to attracted, and if another sim had all the three traits, your character indicated that with a maximum of 3 lightning bolts. This was fun at first, just the only problem was that the attraction was determined only by such factors as the hair color, body shape, etc.. So eg. if a sim's turn ons contained for example black hair, then there was a good chance she was attracted to any guy with black hair no matter how ugly they were actually. So overall this method was so superficial that it was already dropped in the Sims3.
In the previous game, the attraction between two sims was based on matching their traits. In other words on their compatibility. This also meant that there was no one-sided attraction, and unlike the Sims2, it was rather the internal qualities of a sim that mattered here. That's all good, but creating a perfect looking sim in the Sims3 had as much sense as in the Sims4.
So based on what we have seen so far, I can say that for sure creating the perfect attraction system is almost impossible with the current artificial intelligence. The characters in the game will never be able to perceive the concept of beauty by themselves, so I think this part should be left 100% to the players. This means, we should be the ones to choose which characters are attractive, and which ones are repulsive.
Maybe the attractiveness of all sim should be divided into levels. In the character creator there should even be an option where you could choose the attractiveness of each sim from about 10 different levels from the ugliest to the most attractives. Of course this doesn't have to mean that an ugly male sim could never get his dream princess, but in this case a persistent effort and a longer build up should be required for him.
But I also know that the notion of beauty is partly subjective, but we have to realize that there are such women and men in real life as well who can get almost anyone mainly because of their external "gift" ...So it is partly objective as well..
But back to the topic the only problem here is the same as in the case of the other attraction systems of the previous games. You cannot set the attribution and abilities of the new residents in time, and the game randomly does it for you. This can be a problem when a troll-looking grandpa becomes every woman's dream man in the entire town until you set him the right attractiveness lol ..But it is possible to find a solution for this.
In the end it should be noted that this entire attraction method that I described cannot be a decisive factor just by itself, because as they say, the appearance is not everything. In other words, this system I wrote should be combined with something else. Maybe factors such as personality and traits, or wealth and reputation, etc. must also should have some influence.
Overall this is also just an idea not more, and since I haven't thought this so thoroughly yet, there could be some dead ends in that.
This is very true. Even in the distant future, the AI will probably never be able to recognize the nature of beauty. The machines have no feelings, no hormones or tastes, and even have no sexuality and reproductive instinct either. They will remain just emotionless robots forever..
I think that AI will be able to recognize, for example, the societal definition of beauty, or any sort of definition that you input really. The nature of beauty is something that may be beyond them, as @BreakTheSilence says, because that is more nuanced, more emotional, more human. As far as reproductive instinct goes - it is arguable, according to research, that humans do not have that, just as no actual human pheromone has ever been found. It has been argued by scientists that we as humans ourselves have learned behavior rather than innate behavior when it comes to many things such as that. Even as basic as the body parts that we sexualize, it is learned from society, not innate. Contrary to popular belief, the bosom has not always been sexualized throughout all cultures and all time.
That's a little far away from the sims, but I do find the research to be interesting, and it has to do with the comment above...
All my daily trances, and all my nightly dreams, are where thy grey eye glances, and where thy footstep gleams.
I dance to the beat of my own drum, no matter how measured or far away.
I do love a road. You can always be wondering what is at the end of it.
This approach seems promising. Too bad the English isn't my native language, I had a little trouble getting along with the long translation. This post was a bit tough for me.

Then I'm glad you didn't see the first version of that. It was quite a mess. But maybe it's still hard for those who aren't familiar in the topic.
The starting point of the attraction should definitely be the appearance, and not things like personality. Everything starts with a first sight, and we all know the saying, the appearance catches you, the "inside" keeps you. But I recommend the system I mentioned here rather than the chemistry, since the execution of the latter does not resemble reality at all. I mean, does the fact that some1 has brown hair and blue eyes just by itself make them attractive to us? No. That's why the chemistry system was doomed from the first minute..
After having the external impression, this can be followed by those conditions such as social compatibility, and the social status, etc..

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." There is no such thing as universal attractiveness. There's also more to it than visual looks, such as DNA chemistry, immunization chemistry, musks, pheremones, personality compatibility, and then there's the part of beauty determined like in The Sims 2 which is real, too. Sometimes people are into black hair or blond hair, either it's their own hair color (xenophobia), or it's the hair color of an exotic people they're attracted to (xenophilia). There's a lot to beauty, and it isn't always based on appearances. What is based on appearances we don't all agree on what to look for in a partner. It's best this way. If we all looked the same, we'd be inbreeding. You shouldn't want everyone to look the same.

The reality is obviously more complicated than the method I suggested here, on the other hand, we shouldn't forget that we already have limits in the artificial intelligence. You beautifully described to me how the human nature works, and how deep the chemistry between men and women. But you will never see this in a computer game...
And about the universal attractiveness... I know girls who are courted by tens of thousands of men, and girls who are courted by none. Yeh, people are different, but you can't say it's not exist.
I like the idea of having a new kind of attraction system, but without a strong autonomy in the game it doesn't make sense. I'm getting tired of that the wohoo and other erotic activities are only in use if the players command the sim characters. It would be nice if, with the help of the attraction, the npcs could fall in love, and finally form a relationship with each other even without the players contribution.
This game simply just uneventful. I want relationship dramas like infidelity, jealousy, and love triangles, and I would like that the NTR genre to be able to realized in the game. I finally want to see characters with own will instead of these empty bots. And I repeat, if they make a new attraction for the Sims 5, or even for this game yet, we need strong autonomy too!

Excellent wording. This game shouting for changes like this. But the key word of your comment was the npcs own will, and for this the high autonomy is really necessary. The NTR as a possible event sounds good to me as well. Too bad the developers won't even read these posts.

The NTR as a genre has actually always existed in all Sims, just the problem is that you have to create the whole event yourself. And that brings us to the root of the main problem. As @LoveInHarmony pointed out, the real weakness of The Sims is that the characters in the game are practically unviable without us. Their all life circumstances such as friendships, relationships, or even the NTR itself, depends on us in the game. I'm not exaggerating, without mods I got bored of the Sims 4 in less than 1 month. This game has giant potential, but right now it's nothing more than giving orders to unconscious characters.

Indeed. How much better would it be if they could occasionally visit public places on their own, where you can follow them if you want. Or by a working attraction system they could choose their ideal sim whom they desire, and they would constantly try to get him or her. Although the initiative is rather the man's task..
I've been waiting for about twenty years for the npcs to finally be much more independent.
So if I understand correctly, you thinking of a new type of attraction system, which the core of is no longer the chemistry but the players choices and tastes. This seems hopeful. I've always wanted that certain sim characters to be more popular and desirable just because of their looks, and with this idea it might finally become possible. It's definitely a good start, but I wouldn't stop here, and I would go even further. We need to include an option too where we can choose which type of personality some sims prefer such as smart, shy, decisive, good humored, etc. But it's true the quality of humor is more important for a woman than for a man, because it's not a kind of girl trait which attracts the men, thus a distinction must be made between the two genders' options. But I think your idea is great because the appearance would finally matters, just something like zodiac compatibility is also necessary to add.
I really like the new feature where you can say what traits your sims like and dislike, I just wish I could make it romantic as well - as in what turns my sim on might not be the same as what I'd like in a friend. Also physical features would also be nice, as we are attracted to different things, and it could be easily integrated into the likes/dislikes as well (so my sim might get attracted to moustaches on red heads, or by romantic sims, but just want to be friends with deep thinkers).
Moreover, I advise that the cart button must be destroyed!
Related to this discussion, I could imagine such social sites in the gameplay, where our sim characters can make new friends and they can upload their own selfies. This is where the importance of physical attraction would be, which would affect their popularity as well. The more attractive our character is, the more likes and followers she will gain after an uploaded picture.
Thanks for all the comments guys, and the effort to improve this discussion. To be honest I didn't expect such helpful ideas, and I appreciate everyone's input.
There's a mod out there that has a sfw version that has a fantastic attraction system (which from my understanding we're not allowed to name even though the game itself references it with certain wicker furniture?) - it will randomly decide what every sim finds attractive/unattractive, but the player has the ability to manually change those options, and you can end up with Betty finding Bob extremely attractive but Bob finding Betty to be basic-looking.
It would be great if the actual game could use that mod's existing system, and incorporated it into Neighborhood Stories - so sims that find each other attractive are more likely to end up married, and if you the player manually change what those sims like, then there's a chance they'll autonomously cheat with someone they now find attractive (as an extension of that, how wild would it be if that meant neighborhood stories sometimes gave you a married couple who had a kid, but the kid's father wasn't the mother's husband?)
I definitely don't think there's a realistic or fair way to have the game determine what is attractive just based on facial structure, but how chaotic would that make things like a breed out the weird challenge!

Yes, I have a guess which mod you mean, and it uses the chemistry. But as you confirmed the problem correctly, there is no way for the game to determine the real attractiveness e.g. by on facial structure, and unfortunately even the chemistry system can't do that, since it diagnoses the ideal just by hair, and eye color or body shape etc. That's why I think that it has no real future, even if many mods still using it.
So as I said above, I rather suggest to create an other attraction system that works based on the player's will (or as some1 said "tastes"), where we can determine each npc's attractiveness from about ten possible levels from the ugliest to the most attractives. I'm not sure how well it would work actually, but maybe it would worth a try.
@BreakTheSilence
You are too optimistic. I strongly doubt that the devs are planning something like that.
And you think I'm not aware of that? 😀 Those few more upcoming kits they are only planning yet won't change the game significantly. But actually that pic was rather an attraction meme to lift the spirits, and shows the difference between games and reality. My main wish was always a smarter AI, but I also want a better attraction system too.

I really hope you're wrong and there's still a lot of content left, since the Sims 5 was promised to be released in 2026 ...at the earliest. But based on the activity of this forum, there is no sign this series will be finished in this year. Not to mention we can still find a few leaks to fill in this game, like a missing holiday pack, or some gameplay, and interaction improvements etc.
Btw I appreciate your attempt to uplift a bit the mood here with memes:)
To be honest I liked the Sims4 attraction system much better then the Sims3. For me the Sims3 attraction system was like a dumbed-down version of Sims2. I feel it was the worst system from all. In fact I'm really curious what it will be like in the Sims5.

I like this. Being able to say, this sim likes these things, and this other sim likes these other things, etc. Kind of tailor your sims and the npc's the way you want them to be. I like to micromanage when it comes to certain things, though...but I see no problem with that in this case. Ultimately I think things like that should be able to be modified by the player and the player's preferences for the sims in their universe. You can modify gender preference and all of that when it comes to romance - if they add traits in as well, why not add that into that little section. You can select or deselect whatever number of things.

Personally I'm more then open to finally see a new variety of attraction system since I wasn't really statisfied either with the older games results. I can definitely say I'm not that easy to impress when it comes to this topic, but the suggestion I read here is finally a good one.
But if I had to highlight something from the comments too, I would start with my biggest wish, when it comes to "determine the real attractiveness by on facial structure" just like in the reality. I really wish this could happen once in the Sims, but the game's AI won't do that, it's evident. That's why I preferring the conception which was proposed here in the main post.
Although the main reason I reacted to this post was that I think the attraction should play a bigger role than whether both sim find attractive each other or not. I recently responded to another post which was about the lack of social differences in the game. I truly believe that it would be good for the game if this so-called equality between the sims would disappear, and the popular sims would get more recognition and respect than average. But beyond the wealth and workplace prestige the attraction should also have a big influence on the social differences. Especially the life of the teenagers should be affected by this topic, where the attractive sims have a kind of popularity and influence, which an average sim cannot experience. Perhaps I don't need to say that it should also affect the development of friendship between the two extremes.
I would really like to finally have a usable attraction system for the game that has something to do with reality as well, but then it should really be finally an attraction system, and not a kind of chemistry system.

That's a little far away from the sims, but I do find the research to be interesting, and it has to do with the comment above...

I've been waiting for about twenty years for the npcs to finally be much more independent.
I dance to the beat of my own drum, no matter how measured or far away.
I do love a road. You can always be wondering what is at the end of it.But if I had to highlight something from the comments too, I would start with my biggest wish, when it comes to "determine the real attractiveness by on facial structure" just like in the reality.
