About changing traits through self discovery

With the new growing together pack sims can swap out a trait and gain additional ones. I have a few questions about that.

1. We only get 3 self discovery moments. If I decline a new trait, will that count towards one of those three moments. I was offered the unflirty trait for the first self discovery for one of my sims and said no. Does that mean this sim will only have two self discovery moments left?
2. What happens when I take a sim with changed traits into CAS. Can I change a 4th or 5th trait they gained in CAS. Can traits that are swapped out be altered in CAS. Obviously the full edit in CAS cheat needs to be active for this one.
3. Is there a way to trigger a self discovery moment. One of my sims married a townie with the mean trait and I would like to replace that one through gameplay.

I would think to replace the mean trait you might have your sim act nicely to people, and maybe outgoing or cheerful or something similar might pop up. I’m still working on compatibilities for my big rotational save, so haven’t tried it yet. I remember reading somewhere that to get the close family dynamic that you can use deep thoughts, and I remember someone saying that when you ask your children to do things that a strict family dynamic might pop up. I’ll be following this thread as I’m interested how to change things as well.

    I’ll share a few things I noticed.

The last time I went into CAS to edit my Sim’s original 3 traits after they gained new traits through self discovery, my game crashed.

After that I used the reward trait (I forget the name but it lets you reset your Sims traits). Well what that ended up doing was completely removing the self discovery traits and allowing me to reset the original traits.

After using that potion or whatever it is, I noticed my Sim didn’t get any new pop ups to learn the self discovery traits again even though the ones learned were removed.

    1. We get more than 3 self discovery moments (I rejected the cheerful trait countless times).
    2. Changing the traits through cheats could result in a bug. Seen it mentioned elsewhere.
    3. There are ways to trigger self discovery moments. I havent found all of them but cleaning makes you neat, getting scared makes you paranoid, caring for infants makes you family oriented.

To add to the list started by @kostasmpi, getting a promotion at work may trigger an ambitious self-discovery moment.

    Flirting makes ypu romantic.
Breaking up gives you commitment issues.
    Getting married triggers loyal.
Being happy makes you cheerful (it also triggers a swap if you have the hot headed trait.
I have not yet found a way to trigger evil even though I tried. Apparently making enemies or fighting wont be enough.

Evil sims enjoy seeing other sims be miserable. Maybe try to find a sad, tense, embarassed or uncomfortable sim and mock their emotional state? (Just an idea, I don't have the pack.)

    My answers to the questions:

    1. No, declining a self-discovery moment won't count towards the maximum three. Only the three you accept will.
    2. No, you can't. Others have said it will crash the game, but when I tested this out, it didn't crash mine. In addition, you will also be unable to change your sim's traits through CAS and trying to change one will lock you into traits panel. If you accept changes and return to the game, nothing will have changed in your sim's traits. In addition, if you use the re-traiting potion, all the additional traits will be removed when you change a trait through it (so you'll be back to three).
    3. That's an interesting question... A brief look into the tuning files reveals that all of the personality traits (even DLC ones) are accounted for and there are 26 self-discovery categories. I might have to look into it and make a separate discussion on it if I make anything of it...

mostly I keep getting cheerful suggestion i think might be cause full needs trigger happy which triggers the suggestion

I also had suggestion for squeamish after my sim cleaned gross toilet or due to the house being a mess or due to infant blowout i am not sure which one it was kind of chaotic

i hope its not only 3 suggestions regardless of accepted or not since some of them seem certainly much easier to trigger

@Simmingal you can decline as many as you want. Only the ones you accept count towards the three discoverable traits.

Ok. I took a look into tuning files, tried to understand it as best as I could, and shared my finding in a discussion.

    In short:

The answer to question number 3 is that it depends. Some self-discovery moments have a special way to trigger it, for example drinking spoilt milk leading to Lactose Intolerant trait. Usually, each category has a value that can be raised or lowered through gameplay. Once a certain value is reached, the game may suggest a new trait randomly chosen from the category from respective extreme (min or max).

Thank you all for your replies. It is nice to know that declining a trait does not count towards the 3 traits.
I don't think I will wait for the traits I want to trigger. I will earn enough points for the retraiting potion. I completely forgot about that potion. Thanks to everyone who mentioned it. This way I can decide myself without having to cheat. Well, the potion is kind of cheaty but it is a game mechanic my sim can earn.

@EgonVM thanks for giving an overview of all pop new traits in the other thread.

If you have get to work, I believe you can sell the potions too, but if I remember correctly they cost nothing. I down loaded a youth potion from the gallery, and put them in a store so I could have my sims go buy them to change the ages of brothers and sisters that were made in CAS.

Once sims add new traits you can't change them in CAS, but you can use the equip/remove cheat to make changes. I've yet to get a swap trait popup, but wonder if these will show up once you have all 3 of your new traits?

Nope, then you have reached the limit. Trait swaps count towards self-discovery trait gains.

It all depends on the traits your sim has and the category the traits are (I'll include link to my findings). Some make sense, like Evil trait getting replaced with Good trait. Some make no sense (especially as they don't conflict), like Freegan trait getting replaced with Kleptomaniac trait.
