When You Didn't Get the Pictures

Right now I'm feeling like a total lamebrain. For some odd reason I had two Screenshot folders inside of my game folder. I do have another one labeled _Older and another one labeled _Starlight Accolades, They have been in the folder for some time without causing any issues. However, I thought I had deleted one of the two EMPTY folders, but apparently not. Now, I'm sitting here on the horns of a dilemma.

Do I …

I'm confused, if you deleted your screenshots how would a roll back help?

No, I didn't delete them. I discovered they weren't anywhere. Then I saw that I had two Screenshot folders in my game. I totally thought I had already deleted the second one I didn't need. I'm feeling like I have a very low I Q at the moment. :'(

I still don't understand how rolling back a save is related. The game doesn't interact with the screenshots folder at all outside of when you click the camera button to view them within the game.

I would like to help or give advice, but I’m a bit confused.

Did your sims do/achieve something, or you had a pic of the sims in a lovely scene, but then you accidentally deleted the folder that had pictures of the event/situation?

If so, hmm…Is the folder in the trash on desktop?

If rolling back doesn’t help, I would try re-doing the event/situation again or use cheats to take off a status and try the event/situation event again to take new screenshot pictures of, maybe…

Have you looked in the Recycle Bin?
Things usually stay there for a while, and you might find the entire folder. If you've checked and it's there, Just right-click the folder and select "Restore." The folder will pop back to wherever it used to be.

Please forgive me if you've already checked. I work with non-computersavvy people, and also understand forgetting one's own head now and then.

I usually forget that Sims 4 has screenshots, and only remembered again just now, so if the recycle bin doesn't help, I hope someone cleverer than me does!

Thank you @phantasmkiss I did check just this morning. I even went through the Screenshots folders again, in vain. the pictures went nowhere. By having two Screenshots folders in the game folder confused the game mechanics. I'm still wondering how I had two, when I know I deleted one of them. I have this bad habit of double-clicking on everything, when in some cases it only takes one click to open it. I generally get two of something, as a result. I'm leaning toward rolling back and playing it again, hoping that my Sim will win again. I also had some very charming shots of his children that are lost. Oh, well. Chalk it up to lessons learned, I guess. :/

The problem is, I apparently had TWO Screenshot folder when there should only be one. The game had no idea which folder to use so they went nowhere. My Bad, I tend to double-click when it's not necessary. I could swear I deleted the second file the day before, realizing I had two, but, no there it was. Dang it all. Yes, something fabulous happened, besides me getting some very charming snapshots of four of the Child Sims. Oh, well. What's gone is gone. I can only hope the important event happens again after I roll back a save. I'm so very glad I do a Save As for each gaming session. It has come in very handy. I'm finding that a much better solution to having to start this story from the 'beginning', if you will.

The roll back is in the hopes I can catch pictures again of what went down, so to speak. Sometimes the game plays out as it did prior I have noticed. Not always, but sometimes. If so, I hope to truly capture the images to help tell the story later. I did see Erik being attacked by a chicken to help answer what happened. I stuck with that save and other stuff happened, so I hope to catch the pictures I thought I had. Will Andrew look sideways at the camera again? Probably not, but it might be fun to see if that happens and other charming moments with Erik's children. They are all just too cute.

On a somewhat related subject, if you are syncing your Documents folder to OneDrive disable that. It can cause all sorts of problems with missing folders and files. Its more reliable to regularly do something like zip up a copy of your saves, screenshots & videos folders (or just your whole sims 4 folder, if you dont have gigabytes of CC) and save that somewhere else, like a USB stick

Ahh, I understand better now. I still don't understand how you even can have two folders with the same name...Windows wouldn't let me do that even if I wanted to. But I do understand that what happened is you didn't even get the screenshots you thought you took.

I'd change my vote to just forget about it...there's no way I'd roll back a save just for a couple of pictures.

Have you checked that the game didn't create the missing Screenshots folder? Having the other two folders shouldn't have confused the computer, they had a different name to the one it is programmed to save screenshots to.

OH! Now I bet I understand what happened, she had two screenshot folders with slightly different names and NO actual Screenshot folder with the correct name. It is weird that they didn't program it to auto-create a new one when that happens...but at least I actually understand why it failed to save the pictures at all.

This thread did really have me confused until your comment.

I just checked and you can delete/rename the screenshots folder even while playing. So not having it there at all is something that can happen.

Yes, you can remove it or rename it, but I thought it was created automatically when/ if not found, like the mods folder and the ini files.

The game only creates the ini files when you launch it, so maybe it does the same for the screenshot folder, but she deleted it while actually already playing?

No, I wasn't playing the game at the time I deleted the extra Screenshots folder. I had two by mistake. I only became aware of it AFTER I shut down the game for the day and was anxious to select which pictures I wanted to use when I posted my story. That's when I found out I didn't have the pictures taken during yesterday's gameplay. I went through both Screenshots folders and they were empty. I even went through the other two Screenshots folders I had already renamed. It is my understanding once you rename a file, the game doesn't recognize it. But none of the day's photos were there. None. I even checked my trash as another player suggested. Nope, not there either. Oh, well. I had one really sweet photo of the five eldest Child Sims as they left the kitchen after their meal. Peter, the youngest boy gave the camera a sidelong glance. I took that picture, but what can I say? When I bungle something I go all out! LOL

Before I began my reconstructive gameplay today, I checked and doublechecked my game folder to make certain I didn't have more than one Screenshots file. I was also in a quandary as to whether I should rollback or do a save recovery. I decided to start with a save recovery and if that didn't work, I would rollback. I was given a choice of at least four under that save's number. I chose one and it put me back into the game in the wee hours of Sunday morning. I reconstructed the day as I recalled how it went. The family, (both parents and the eldest five Child Sims) did some volunteer work. They visited an Old Folks' Home and later went to help out at a Soup Kitchen. When they got back home Erik puttered around until it was time to get ready for the Starlight Accolades Show. I ended up putting him in a different suit than what I had chosen for him the day before, but he went and the Show took place. I have pictures (I think, haven't checked as of yet). I'm working on a story in my head and when I have it all worked out, I shall share what happened. :)

Please see the answer I gave @Stormkeep above. I had Four Screenshots files, two were renamed: One Screenshots_Older, the other Screenshots_Accolades and two named Screenshots, which is the correct wording. The game must have gone tilt unable to choose between the two correctly named folders. So my photos went nowhere. May I cry now?

Totally unrelated to screenshots, but if you want to feel better about your little blunder, I'll share with you what I did yesterday.

I have a batch file that I run to delete the caches, which includes going into the various cache subfolders the game makes and calling out to "del *.* /q"....which in layman's turn means, delete everything and don't bother asking me if I'm sure.

I somehow deleted one line in the batch file by accident at some point and instead of pointing at one of the cache folders for the sims, it ran in my Windows\System32 folder....

Fortunately most of the files there are protected and can't be just deleted by a batch file, but it still deleted a LOT of files, super quickly, before I could stop it. I have had to reinstall directx and some Windows SDK's so far and I think there's probably some things still missing that will cause me some problem or another down the road.

As foolish mistakes go, I think I take the cake from you.

I am not sure you can have two folders with the exact same name, one of them must have been spelt slightly differently.

Well, thank you @Stormkeep I'm not that computer savvy (as if you couldn't already tell) so most of what you did flew right over my head. I gather that you should never have directed it to not ask if you were sure. I do get annoyed as my Recycle Bin (trash) does the same thing. But, on the other hand, if you've actually goofed, this could be a saving grace.

The long and the short of it is today I am in a much better frame of mind. I chose (quite by chance) the correct method to replay that game day. While I didn't get all of the pictures, I did get some cute ones of the kids. And once I work out that story, I'll share what happened. :)

Yep, you absolutely cannot. Unless you are running Unix or MacOS and have chosen a very specific file system for the drive. Even then, at least one letter in the name needs to be a different case (upper vs. lower). So "Screenshots" and "screenshots" could both exist at the same time.

Windows is not case sensitive though, so in windows you just simply cannot have it and very few people even on Mac use the file system which allows it.
