New PC - TS3/4

«1
Hi all,

I'm considering purchasing a new PC as my current one has been slowly dying for the last few months. :s

I live in the UK and my budget is around £700. I'd quite like to build one through https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/ as I ordered my current desktop with them and was very happy with their service.

Ultimately I want to be able to play Sims 3 & 4 on high settings with all packs installed.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated! :):#

700 pounds is a low budget for a custom computer with certified hardware. You may have to buy a computer off the shelf @chesterbigbird is a build expert. I would speak to her

The cheapest custom on that site i made was $800 including Vat, and that's a basic AMD cpu with GTX 1050ti card.
When customizing from that site you need to add a better power supply (the standard corsair is CRAP) and need to add cooling also.
Let me know if you want me to list the changes i would make to this particular build :

Thank you for your replies. :)

I meant to say also that I don't need a monitor, keyboard or mouse so that might have an impact on the total cost.

Your welcome. Chester is saying just the custom tower will cost over 800 pounds for basic. It will be even more if chester recommends you better hardware. Custom cost more than buying off the shelf .

I just also checked PC world UK for premade PC specialist pc's and their computers that have hardware that meets all requirements are also out of your price range. The computers in your price range do not include all hardware that meets requirements for this game and they all have weak and old processors.

PC world UK does have an MSI infinite gaming desktop on sale for 699 pounds that meets all requirements

Amazon UK has a PC specialist PC that meets all requirements. it's called Vanquish Centurion gaming PC for 695.35 pounds . It's sold by a 3rd party seller Ebuyer UK Limited

@alexspoom13, please note this is the Mac section. :) Hope you enjoy your new Windows computer. (Oh and all computers are PC's as it stands for Personal Computer ;) )

I've just looked at the Centurion PC. One of the things I forgot to mention is that ideally I'd like one larger HDD and one smaller SSD.

Also, are the i5 and 8GB RAM enough for complete Sims 3 and 4 games?

The more you want in a computer , the more costly it will be. This includes having two hard drives. Your budget is too low for custom. If you want more in a desktop, I suggest saving more money before buying a computer.

i5 and 8 gb ram is fine. Your video card, processor, amount of ram and hard drive space all come into play with meeting requirements.

Thanks @Tremayne4260 I didn't realise! Hopefully the mods can move it.

I could possibly increase my budget to £800 but that would be the maximum. I've seen a few decent-looking builds in that price range.

If your trying to go custom you need to speak to @chesterbigbird but as she said you will get low end hardware for 800 pounds. for a custom with certified better hardware I suspect will be 900 pounds or more

I will list you a custom hopefully today.. been busy and have not turned the pc on. Have not forgotten about this thread ;)

The problem with that is, decent looking builds may not include the best brands on the hardware included and often come with less then desirable power supplies which is a bad thing.
If you don't mind the last gen intel cpu then this is ok for a basic gaming desktop

The 8Th generation intel is out of your price range and so is the higher end AMD.

@chesterbigbird Thank you. I have looked at that build although it was missing a few things that are important to me such as a Dvd drive and an SSD.

I have just configured the following specs on Pc Specialist for £858:

Couple of thing's wrong.. the power supply is horrible. That power supply should not be used in a gaming desktop.. this is why i said pc specialist desktops will need to add a better power supply.
The case has basically no proper cooling or ventilation and if you stick with intel stock cooler then you're asking for problems.
I can do a custom for you but it's most likely not going to be intel as it's going to push the budget too far. I will get back to you when i get on my pc.

Okay thanks. How much power (W) would I need ideally?

Some of the things I would like the PC to have

    - An SSD, in addition to a larger 1-2TB drive
    - A DVD drive
    - Built-in Wifi (made the mistake of forgetting this with my current PC)
    - Memory card reader
  • chesterbigbirdchesterbigbird Posts: 8,581 Member
OK so it's not just about wattage it's about the quality of the power supply and how efficient and stable it is.
500 watt would be enough but it needs to be a quality 500 watt. (preferably gold rated)
So say you were looking at the build :
    https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/view/Vortex-800/
First i would change the case as that one only comes with 1 front fan and no exhaust which is a no no. OR keep that case and add the extra case fan option (2x120mm)
Next i would add the corsair 550 watt TXm series power supply
I would then add the Cooler Master hyper 212x cpu cooler (under processor cooling.)
As for wireless then i would probably choose either the AC1200 or the AC1300 option (from wireless/wired networking)
You can then add anything else you want (Memory card reader)

@chesterbigbird Thank you, I have made some changes to that build and it's coming in at just under £1000. :o I may consider purchasing it on finance as I cannot justify spending that in one go.

Regardless, I clicked 'proceed' and it advised me the following: We've checked your specification for compatibility. Please consider our advice below before proceeding:

You have selected a 550W power supply, but based on our calculations you actually only need a 350W power supply. We have calculated your specification to require around 287W of power including a 20% allowance. Although it is not a mandatory requirement to select a lower wattage power supply, doing so will save you money and the last thing we'd like to do is over charge you!

Just curious to hear your thoughts on this. And thanks again for all your help thus far.
  • phoebebebe13phoebebebe13 Posts: 19,400 Member
I can answer you on that and chester will agree. You do not want a low end power supply and you do not want that low wattage a power supply. It runs the whole computer
  • alexspoom13alexspoom13 Posts: 7,439 Member
That's okay, I thought it was too low as when I got my current PC I went with 650W. That's quite misleading of the site then.
  • phoebebebe13phoebebebe13 Posts: 19,400 Member
I agree. You do not want a 350 watt power supply in a gaming computer.

LOL like phoebe said, pay zero attention to that "advice" that's very bad advice.
