Crashes when exiting?

starting today, after I tried to put Meadow Glen in my game (but decided not to and took it out. Never even installed it.) my game started not loading. I did the usual process of removing my mods, doing the 50/50 method and came to the root of the problem. Now I have another problem.

Whenever I try to exit my game, it goes black screen and then eventually says not responding.

Just a note, I don’t use save and exit I just use save or save as. This has even happened on a new save. The saves don’t seem to be affected (haven’t actually loaded the recent one up yet, my laptop needed a break) but this is still really annoying.

Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks.

Perhaps you already do this routinely, but have you cleared the five cache folders in the top level of your TS3 user game folder in Documents?

If all else fails, this may seem a little drastic but you may need to remove your entire user game folder from Documents and let a new one with no content spawn in its place. It could be that for whatever reason the one you have now is damaged. If the no content game folder works properly, then you could keep it and begin installing your content and worlds into it, copy your mods over, and eventually copy your saves over so they can be played forward again.

@igazor I routinely remove the cache files before every gaming session. Which user game folder are you meaning? I’ve already deleted the entire Sims 3 folder and let another one spawn. Is there something else you are talking about?

That is the one I meant. If the game is crashing on exit on a clean, freshly spawned game folder with no content yet added at all (meaning a new test game started in that environment), I would be worried about a faulty installation or patch job. Or possibly not enough hard drive space to work with where you have the game running. Does it really happen with newly started test games or only with older long-running game saves brought forward and which patch level are you running? This is not typical game behavior.

@igazor it does it with everything. I don’t even have my old saves anymore and it does it. I’m on patch 1.69 thanks to origin and I’m about to just uninstall and reinstall everything because this is really aggravating.

And just to confirm here, you have plenty of free space on the hard drive on which you are playing the game?

@igazor yes. It’s a new laptop with over 1 tb of space and I have over 900+ gun available. I don’t have any files except a few pictures and the sims on it. All of my school stuff is on my thumb driv

Only other thing I can think of is trying an Origin Repair Game, since you are already on 1.69 and have that available. Usually hardware related issues prevent the game from being played, not from being quit, but we could talk about your specs on this new laptop if you share them with us.

@igazor here’s the link. I just got the laptop so I’m still getting familiar with windows 10 and where everything is.

How much free space do you have on C drive? 256 gb ssd is small to game on . Do you have more than one game installed on C drive?

Yes, you have two drives, a smaller SSD and a much larger HDD. So have you installed the game on C or on D (where is its Program Files?) and have you redirected your Documents folder, which is where your TS3 user game folder would be, from what would be the default location of C over to D?

Your laptop isn't going to "know" that it's not suitable for installed programs and user folders to land on C without being told otherwise.

If you just open up My Computer or the equivalent in Win 10 and look at the C and D drives, or right-click and do Properties if you must, that should tell you how much free space is available on each. But only you can tell us which drives are holding the installed program and the user game folder.

@igazor I believe @IllyDior is playing the sims 3 on C drive SSD. We had this conversation before. they also play TS4. We need to make sure only TS3 is on the SSD and that TS4 is on D drive and any other games. the 256 gb SSD can only handle having TS3 installed

@igazor // @phoebebebe13 sorry for the extremely late reply, I had GradBash this weekend and haven’t had a moment to check the forums until now. I only have ts3 on my SSD.

Ts4 is on my HDD because I didn’t really think ts4 needed much of a boost in terms of startup and loading times.

I had help from phoebe to move my game to the SSD and it worked fine for a few days but then I started having this issue.

Okay, but the open question remains: how much free space do you have left on the C drive?

@igazor it says I have 149 gb of space left. Is that not enough?

Out of 256 GB? Yes, that's plenty. But we did have to rule that out, lack of drive space is a common cause of the game crashing on loadup, saving, and quitting (among other times not even related to the game).

Okay @igazor should I maybe try to uninstall and reinstall the game? Because I think that’s the only thing I haven’t done at this point.

And have you tried Origin's Repair Game as I suggested earlier?

Also worth asking, what kind of frame rates are you getting in-game? Cheats console, type fps on (enter) to see the value displayed. As you play and move the game camera around, the value should never go above the refresh rate of your monitor -- usually 60 Hz, so 60 fps. To make the display go away, cheats console again and fps off (enter). It's not typical to see uncapped frame rates causing crashes on exit in particular, but it wouldn't be totally unheard of.

@igazor, I used the repair game function before creating the post, my apologies if I forgot to mention it in the original post.

As far as my FPS I am unable to open my game now whatsoever after going 2 days without opening it. The game gets to the first loading screen and crashes.

I don’t know if this is important but I only play with Ambitions, late night, gen, Uni, Supernatural, & seasons.

@igazor just an update l uninstalled and reinstalled the games and expansions. Did a complete rehaul of all of my cc and mods and so far there hasn’t been the problem of not closing anymore.
