My graphics card isn't recognized by The Sims 3??!!

I recently bought a Radeon R7 200 graphics card. I mean it's a huge card with 2 fans. It's an awesome card. When I boot up my sims it doesn't recognize my card and it uses my on board graphics card instead which = extremely poor graphics. Why doesn't the game recognize this card and is there anything I can do about besides the idea of buying a new one? I won't buy a new one becuz to run this card I needed a 650 W power supply so I had to buy a new power supply too.

I'm very unhappy :(

Make sure that on your computer you have told your graphics card to use the Radeon Graphics Card for the Sims 3. My computer defaulted to the Intel Integrated Graphics chip for the Sims 3, I had to manually tell the Computer to use my GeForce Graphics Card.

Look at your DeviceConfig folder that is in your Sims 3/Electronic Arts/Sims 3 folder

Refer to this Wiki to get the Sims 3 to recognize your graphic card:

CeeJay. It says it's an AMD Radeon R7 200 series. That's all I know about it. I hope that helps. It looks good. I think crisper.

THANK YOU CHERI! I checked out the wiki guide, made a change, booted up the game and they have faces now so it seems the game is reading the card. Thank you!

So glad to help! I just went through this with my new laptop and the game not recognizing my Nvidia GeForce 745M so it was pretty recent in my mind!

ok LeahxRIx8 it will say on the box the card's number. i recently added msi 29 270x to my game but my cpu does not have intel chip so i have just the one card

my card is not recognized by the game but its not an issue.

now in the past it was typical to disable the integrated chip when adding a new dedicated card to a desktop. this is different then laptops

i be interested in knowing if you treated the set up like a laptop dual card - setting up the better card to run the game

if it works then thats fine :D but know there is no need to get the card officially recognized by the game if the graphics are good. in fact newer dual graphics need an external additional program to make this happen, so not necessary.

I have the exact same card/problem- where did you add the card in those two files? My attempt at adding it at the top of the ATI cards (on the graphicscard.sgr) did not make a difference :(

hi @Pritzooo are you saying like the OP here you added a new card to your system and the card is not being read by the but instead the intel video chip?

can you post your dxdiag so i can see your driver info also some recent driver updates have been giving sims 3 players issues, rolling back to prior drivers may help. there also a week ago AMD released a "fix" for the crimson drivers have you installed those?

to post hit windows key + R enter dxdiag run report hit save all info and notepad doc will open copy/paste the whole long report here, thanks!

Hi @ceejay402, thanks for your reply! I have the exact same graphics card as @LeahxRIx8 and have tried to follow the simwiki (it didn't work). I am more confused about where (location) to add my card in both sgr files. To be honest, my game runs perfectly (so is utilising the GPU), but I'm having the pixelated shadow issue. Here is my dxdiag (graphics section):

thanks so im little confused its probably related to the dual set up. sorry i shouldve just made you post the full report so i can view the system devices section. the date of your posted drivers:
    Driver Date/Size: 04/12/2015 00:00:00, 1519232 bytes

but you have drivers installed Driver Version: 15.300.1025.1001 which are these http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows 10 - 64

the other thing there was a fix released on 1/7 because of the many issues folks we were having, Crimson Edition 16.1 Hotfix

so what i suggest do a clean install of your drivers, thats just uninstalling current and then installing - consider doing a custom install to not add the gaming experience app by raptr and add fix

    afterwards tweak card settings

the jagged lines is related to aliasing - others have reported issue with newer drivers for sims 3 you can try tweaking AA settings. i use the setting "application setting" i havent updated to crimson but heres overview for help http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2203-review-of-amd-radeon-settings-crimson-software

its possible the AA settings arent working well because of the drivers i have myself held off updating drivers to avoid the issue but i also run w7 so i have more older drivers i can use. its also possible the new drivers just need reinstalling or its the settings of the new crimson. some are reporting issues with getting custom settings to save correctly. othersw report issues with raptr. i never use raptr :) and then factor in the dual graphic set up

so try reinstalling drivers making sure both drivers are updated rerun your dxidag to confirm its updated correctly and then tweak settings and then try the game and let me know how it goes, good luck

thanks so im little confused its probably related to the dual set up. sorry i shouldve just made you post the full report so i can view the system devices section. the date of your posted drivers:

Wow! Thanks for this. So is there another set of drivers I am missing? AMD is so confusing (I've always has a Nvidia card). I'll def do a clean install, but now I'm just wondering about this dual graphics business. I can post my full report if you want (should of done this in the first place-apologies!). Also I've seen the hotfix- again, could not understand a word of the description. Would it impact on my pixelated shadows issue? The game itself runs beautifully, except those shadows.

so i was about to watch this youtube to confirm how to update dual graphics and check out what they added:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI5JXIn9VbA

the user is stating the new crimson drivers dont work for dual. amd nevera dull moment. ok here's what i think you should try that video was released before the new fix so try the fix

i would use the autodetect http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/auto-detect-tool save the new drivers to the desktop like a file. uninstall old drivers and then add new ones. confirm its the fix http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Radeon-Software-Crimson-Edition-16.1-Hotfix-Release-Notes.aspx

its also possible you may need to consider disabling the dual set up and just run the game with the 270x, again since you only have w10 you only have one prior drivers, until amd provides better drivers if the update doesnt fix your issue

@ceejay402 - you never guess what?! I got my game to recognise my card= no more pixelated tree/building shadows!! So happy! Thank you for all of your help @ceejay402, turns out I did not even need to reinstall my drivers. If anyone has this issue please read this thread. A lovely simmer on there even wrote out the new graphicsrules coding (which I adapted for my own R7 series card). Good luck!

    Hi.
I still can't make this work for me.
I tried my only got this found: 1 match: 0.
I don't know what and where to write in the graphics rule sgr file.
    Can anyone specify for me?
    I have a radeon rx 560 series.
    Thanks! :)

    Hi there.

Much more important than formal card recognition is getting the frame rate on that card capped and making sure it stays that way. If you haven't already done so, you will want to use Radeon Pro or a third party application like RivaTuner Stats Server (RTSS) to limit the frame rate for TS3 to the refresh rate of your monitor. Most monitors and laptop screens are 60 Hz, so that would be 60 fps. Uncapped frame rates will lead to graphics glitches, lag, screen tears, crashes, and can ultimately burn out the card. TS3 does not have a built-in fps limiter.

Checking the frame rates you are actually getting is easy. Ctrl+Shift+C to bring up the cheats console and type fps on (enter). As you play and move the game camera around, you can see the actual fps rates displayed. To make the display go away, cheats console again and fps off (enter).

Once that's confirmed, if not already, I can ask for the info needed and send you the instructions for the formal card recognition by way of PMs. We don't like to put that out on open channels because there are so many different cards out there and the instructions tend to confuse players on different device IDs.
