Project Fenbury

I recently reinstalled TS3 and decided to start again with Project Fenbury. I am somewhat embarrassed as I am not gifted with use of CAW but I am pleased with the progress I have made so far. For background Fenbury is going to be a small village on the South Coast of England. If you can imagine somewhere around the Devon, Somerset and Dorset coast where the geography can be surprisingly rocky along the coastline. I love water so there had to be a river. The families and some buildings are already made. The decision not to use CC or mods is personal, mainly because I lack the skills to sort it if anything goes wrong. Like most small villages it will have a manor house, pub, green and almshouses. It will also have an abandoned railway (thanks Dr Beeching) and castle ruins.

This will form the back of the world and I thought it a good place to put the farm. I think the terrain shaping needs more work but the work done so far is to help me plan the layout.

This is a potential site for a waterfall.

I am going to put the castle ruins here. Again the terrain shaping needs a lot of work. In Norman times they would have looked for the highest point to build because they had a real problem with Viking raiders.

The bridge is in as a marker, it needs considerable work but I have found adding bridges at a later stage when the roads are already down causes me real problems.

How's it going? Are you still working on it? :)

It looks good so far! I have a hard time with painting the terrain too, but I think you're doing better than I do!
I typically just outline the entire land mass with sand and leave it there. I'm not very creative.

Hello @Rflong7 apologies for the delay. I got as far as putting down roads and lots and then I realised a small map would not be big enough. Current medium map is progressing slowly but the bridge is in and the site for the castle ruins.

Steep learning curve but I have been reading up on rabbit hole rugs. I have never used mods before so this could be interesting. In terms of building I have been working g on a couple of community lots. One is the cottage hospital (hence the rabbit hole rugs), the other is The Bridge Inn, am old coaching inn now used as a pub with B&B. I could post a few pics if you would like to see.

Hello @cleo00 I have discovered some more terrain paints which I can download. For now though I am concentrating on terrain shaping first. I have added a few trees as well and put a basic layer of rock on the cliffs and river bank.

This is the view of the castle ruin site at sunset. It was done deliberately this way because it reminds me of Tintagel in Cornwall.

For some reason tinypics has removed my other images.

That's very kind. After making such a mess of my previous attempt I am really trying to plan so I can fit in everything without it looking over busy. Not many pics yet of this latest effort but there will be more. Concentrating my efforts on finishing a couple of community lots at the moment.

Do you make your world map based off any particular town or do you use your own imagination? I am currently working on a world that is going to be somewhat based off Terrasen from Queen of Shadows/Empire of Storms but I am planning out the map from my own imagination and right now I've got some of my community square built and it's pretty busy.

Hello this is my idea of a small seaside town in the South West of England. This is home territory for me as I live in Somerset and know several small towns quite well. Streets and some lot names are from my personal past. My first attempt failed because I used a small flat map which would not accommodate all the lots I want to place without it looking crowded. Imagine a valley with a river running through it to the sea. Most lots would be clustered along the shoreline and the river bank. Using a medium map allows me to do this without the crowded effect.

I've been having trouble with my image hosting site so am trying a new one. I split my project time between CAW and building. I am currently working on a community lot, in this case the hospital. Once I get myself sorted with rabbit hole rugs, I want to edit Fenbury in game and add this lot. It is important to me because it represents the early 20th century health care of the UK pre NHS. In a lot of small towns people paid what they could to set up memorial hospitals in remembrance of the fallen in WW1. These were true community hospitals and integral parts of the communities they served. Many survived the advent of the NHS but there are very few of them left today. The one in the town where I lived as a small child is now a derelict building awaiting demolition. This post shows both the inside and exterior of the hospital. I wanted to decorate the interior because I know we have all tried to look into community lots and been very disappointed. It is a work in progress. I shall be going into buydebug to find the necessary bits and pieces to mark it as a hospital. It will eventually be placed on a cliff top. I would like to think that returning hero sims got a chance to recuperate here and had wonderful views to lift their spirits.

Front note the roof line which is all over the place. This is typical of Cotswold architecture.

    cFGEPRx.png

Entrance hall note the huge space at the front where the rabbithole rug will go.

    PzH0ghO.png

Two ward views. I cannot think of a way of hanging privacy curtains unless I use MOO. Am mulling that one over.

    I6j7XZ4.png

Back view not the balcony and french doors from the wards. Patients would have been encouraged to get as much fresh air as possible in the 1930s. TB was very common both in the UK and the US then.

    O5YGgZz.png

This shot shows the lift shaft and the A&E with the operating theatre above it. Even the cottage hospitals and memorial hospitals still open today have a minor injuries unit. In the old days the local doctors would also have been surgeons as well. Specialists were found in the major teaching hospitals or Harley Street in London for the wealthy.

Not sure whether I have bored or entertained. I have two other community lots as WIP. Let me know if you want to see pics of those.

Today is a CAW day and after a disastrous attempt to attach roads to my bridge I decided to start working on the waterfall area. This will probably make the more experienced and talented world builders wince but I have never really played with water in CAW before. I emphasise this is WIP.

    Hi :)

Your waterfall looks fine! Much better than my first waterfall. :)
Don't forget you can rotate the water fxs and some of the splash fxs for the waterfalls. :)

The terrain is definitely what stumps me most with CAW which is awful because it makes me want to give up before I've even started, lol. If the world is already pretty much laid out, I have no problems placing trees, houses, lots, etc but to start from scratch? NOPE, lol.

That being said, I think your world looks great and can't wait to see more!

Thank you. I'm not finding it easy. In fact I have lost my temper several times this week. It is hard to explain but I want this world to be mine. I don't mind the prep work but I do rather resent roads and bridges that don't join together however hard I try.

Not much to report except I have placed a couple of community lots, worked on the beach and harbour and done some more backdrop. The train tunnel is now in and the farm. The main change this time is the bridge has now gone. It was proving impossible to link to the road network. In the end I lost my temper and deleted it. I have decided to concentrate on terrain work and laying out the rest of the road network. By putting in the train tunnel I can now start to think about the art gallery which will be in the renovated train station. Most big aristocratic houses had a local railway station in Victorian times. Fenbury was no different and Fenbury Holt would have been built sometime in the 1860s and closed in the 1960s as part of Dr Beechings closures. This infamous act saw the closure of hundreds of miles of rail track and stations including the one where I lived as a small child.

Thanks to a lot of help from @Rflong7 most of my time has been spent sorting out issues I have with the actual CAW build. At the moment I am pondering the best way of dealing with my huge amount of store content which is almost certainly stopping EIG from working properly. I have, however been able to progress the road network and have been busy planning the placement of community lots. Here is the police station.
    vA22nUv.png
    EvRXOEq.png

Most old towns like Fenbury would have had a town lock up. In some cases these would have been located near the town bridge and been incredibly tiny. I have assumed that Fenbury town lock up dated from roughly the same time as the castle, was allowed to become a ruin in the time of Oliver Cromwell and the Roundheads and then restored in Victorian times to become the police station. I have other plans for the town bridge so the police station is going to be on the approach road.

The trouble with husbands is they bring nasty colds home from work and expect you to nurse them. The result was inevitable and the last thing on my mind has been world building. To be fair hubby did look after me but it was a flat refusal to let me have the laptop to sneeze and cough over.

Anyway the road to recovery allowed for valuable thinking time. I now have a list of all the lots I should find a home for in Fenbury. One of these ideas is a square of houses with a small park in the middle. This is typical of many small towns. In some places the squares are Georgian and very special like Bath which is a world heritage site and right on my doorstep.

Anyway I have worked out the layout for the Fenbury square. It is to be called Queens Square in honour of two local squares of the same name, one in Bristol and one in Bath. Both are Georgian, although the one in Bristol is much older and the Georgian buildings actually replaced earlier houses. My square will be full of late Victorian houses, some of which have been coverted into busnesses.

    So first the layout
    qTgx9F7.png

And one of the businesses for the square. Correct guessers will get a gold star, metaphorically speaking.
    M4y7xo6.png

The small lot in the centre will be a small park. Think Nottinghilll and you will get what I mean.
