I might continue the story with a son but I never start with a male.
Rarely. I just... male sims kind of bore me tbh, there's just not enough content for them and it's harder to make them look good and I'm shallow and like to play with good looking sims, so I just generally play female sims because they look better. LOL.

I'm the same way. Have a number of different saved games, and only two of them started with a dude. Of those two, I only made one of them in CAS. I think it can be easier to come up with distinct female character designs.
I try to mix it up mostly, I like to keep a gender balance in my game. However in games where I use CC (TS3 & 3) I'm more partial to making and playing female Sims because they're much more fun to make with all the pretty hair, make up and clothes. In Sims 4 though, I'm pretty equal with males and females.
