For anyone who doesn't mind a little CC... I love using the chest-like storage objects over on ATS. They work like the treasure chests from WA but their appearances are a much better fit around my town. I use them pretty much everywhere.
A big reason I use so many is because I play the entire world. I don't want every sim to garden but I do want them to benefit from the skills of a master gardener. So in the local grocery store, I use them for my master gardener(s) to store their excess produce. When I switch to another sim who would like perfect produce, I send them over to pick some up.
The same holds true for fish. At the local fishing hole there are two storage creels. One is to hold excess perfect fish and the other is for perfect bait.
Maybe I don't want my gardeners to spend time and simoleons on working to get a masterful harvester, but I want them to have one. Over at the local hardware store there is a tote for my master crafter to keep a good supply.
You get the idea. At the museum and gallery - a few 'newspaper dispeners' for artists to donate artwork, anyone who wants a nice painting for their home is free to stop by and pick up what they like.
Outside the bookstore, as well as a few other locations around town, I have more dedicated to house donations of uncut gems, metals, etc. Space rocks in a convenient location for aliens looking for a quick snack... extra books already read but not needed, and so on.
The hospital has some coolers and cases to hold cure potions and elixirs, a supply of life fruit.. the kind of stuff that makes sense to visit the hospital for.
In the local bank, a small vault room, there are two safe chests to keep smelted metals, cut gemstones, etc.
Sometimes sims just have too much stuff, and others have too little time to travel to China and look for specific items, or become a witch to make potions, or be a farmer to get perfect honey, eggs and milk and so on. There are so many choices and so many ways to use them. Storage totes and boxes in my sims' homes, attics, storage sheds, keep track of diplomas, awards, plaques, memories, seeds.. whatever they like to keep around but not clutter the inventory with.

This is a great idea, also. I have used these a lot.
