FPS/Nvidia inspector problems

Robinh4Robinh4 Posts: 282 Member
I got a new laptop with new video card (Nvidia GTX 1050). I installed Sims 3 (some exp. packs too). I got my video card added (per instructions on the forum). Then I checked the fps in the game and it was fluctuating between 150-200 (I think it was high before I added my video card). I went to the Nvidia control panel and added ts3w.exe (I have patch 1.67) and turned on vertical sync. But, that didn't work. Also, before I realized what patch I had, I added ts3.exe and I can't remove it, will it cause problems? I installed Nvidea Inspector (I found the link in the forum), this one: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/nvidia-profile-inspector-download.html. When I went to the folder for it on my computer, I pressed on nvidiaInspector.exe and it crashed my computer. Tried again, it did the same. I'm at a loss of what to do now. Any help would be much appreciated.

For what it might be worth, that's not Nvidia Inspector. That is Nvidia Profile Inspector, kind of an add-on (I think). This is the actual application:
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/nvidia-inspector-download.html or at least one worth trying anyway.

@SimplyJen - can you confirm the difference between the two for us or does the newer one include the original functionality? Are there Win 10 update specific things to account for like the Creators Update? I'm on an AMD card so have to use different tools for this, and an not on Win 10 (sighs...yet).

@igazor Ugh, I'm not the smartest person when it comes to tech stuff. Ok, so should I delete it and install the real Nvidia Inspector? Also I'm not sure how to delete it?

Pending Jen's clarification for us when she gets to this thread, all you should have to do is drag the downloaded app to the recycle bin if it's not something that's really installed but was just sitting there hoping to be used (but couldn't be).

If it's really been installed, then it should show up on the Windows built-in Programs and Features control panel where it can be uninstalled.

Got it, I'll wait for Jen's response to delete it. and thanks for telling me how to delete it. I looked in my control panel on my computer and it's not there. Thanks so much for your help. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

I'm not usually up this early... You can thank my cat. :D

@igazor That's the version I usually link to and I believe, it's the version I'm using. Nvidia Inspector / Nvidia Profile Inspector = essentially the same thing. The Nvidia Inspector.exe tool is launched and then from there, you open the Profile Inspector to adjust settings. Just to show what it looks like...

@Robinh4 igazor is Correct, it's an app that's not installed through program files / uninstalled via Windows control panel so you just delete the downloaded applications and file. (can't remember if it extracts into it's own folder)

I'm seeing crash reports from others a year ago using this version apparently related to Pascal cards (10 series NVidia GPUs) & driver version 372.54. Must be something else in the mix to cause this since I have a 10 series card too & my driver is 388.13. Anyways, something is getting caught up and it conflicts resulting to crashing. You shouldn't be concerned that you've done damage to your laptop. Try this version: https://ci.appveyor.com/project/Orbmu2k/nvidiaprofileinspector/build/artifacts

It's a direct download for the Profile Inspector.exe alone which is what you use to adjust settings. Those that reported crashing were able to use this version instead with much better results. If that doesn't work... igazor can tell you about rivatuner.

@SimplyJen Ok, I deleted the other one and downloaded the Nvidia Inspector from the link you gave. Then I unzipped it and it went into a folder in my downloads folder. I don't want to mess anything up again, which one do I press: nvidiaProfileInspector.exe, nvidiaProfileInspector.exe.config, nvidiaProfileInspector.zip, OriginSetup.exe or Reference.xml ? Thank you and thank your cat for me ;)

Nothing to sweat and it's not your fault it was crashing. :) You can delete the .zip... it's of no use unless you want to back it up for later in case this version works out for you. OriginSetup.exe is to install Origin (not related), you can go ahead and delete that too.

This .zip extracts to nvidiaProfileInspector.exe, nvidiaProfileInspector.exe.config, and Reference.xml. You want to open nvidiaProfileInspector. Should have a little green icon sitting next to it.

@SimplyJen Thanks. I pressed on it. Umm... what do I do now? It does not look like the picture you attached earlier.

Sorry, that was to show what Nvidia Inspector looks like... The version you originally linked and the older version I also have comes with Nvidia Inspector & Nvidia Profile Inspector but all you need is the Nvidia Profile Inspector that you just downloaded.

This should be what you're seeing... Select Profiles at the top and scroll through the long list to find Sims 3.

Under Sync and Refresh, select Vertical Sync > Force On
In windowed mode you may have to add an additional setting. Frame Rate Limiter > 60 fps *This number should reflect your own refresh rate so be sure to double check what yours is.
Windows search > Display Settings > Advanced display settings > Display adapter properties > Monitor > (here you will see refresh rate for your screen)
    32116585594_ca5589cd12_o.png
    Apply Changes top right corner.

Track FPS in-game with the cheat fps on. Small text will appear in the corner and it should be capped at whatever your screens refresh rate is. Frame drops are normal but the goal is to not go over that number. *A couple of numbers over for a split second or two is fine. Nvidia Inspector does not require fullscreen mode but if the frames aren't capping, you can try the additional setting under Sync and Refresh setting Frame Rate Limiter to whatever your screens refresh rate is.

@SimplyJen I checked and mine is 60. I did what you said, all though I didn't have to change it, vertical sync was already set to 'force on' in the inspector. That's ok right?

Ok, I'll check in the game to see if it's working. Thanks so much for all your help. Also thanks again @igazor . I'll let you know if it works.

Yes, and that would make sense because you've turned it on already through the Control Panel. The two work together and share setting adjustments.

Go ahead and set Frame Rate Limiter > 60 as well for good measure. Actually, you may see 60.7 and that's fine too. For some reason, the Control Panel won't work for everybody but Inspector usually does the trick. Go into the game now and load up a save. Type in the cheat FPS on... small text will appear in the corner and it should be capped at 60. Frame drops are normal but the goal is to not go over that number. *A couple of numbers over for a split second or two is fine.

@SimplyJen It worked.... It worked. :D Thank you so much. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. It didn't work until I changed the frame rate limiter to 60 like you said. It's so much quicker to load now. It's going from 59 to 60. Thanks so much for everything.
