GTW dance floor problems

I've built a basement nightclub with a dance floor on a platform. When I try it out in the game, a crowd of sims collect to the side, away from the platform and floating in the air.
Any ideas about how to prevent this from happening? If I don't need to, I don't want to expand the size of the platform (which would place a floor under the floating sims).
