Something is wrong with mourning in my game

I'm not really reporting this as a bug as I use mods, and there's no real way to remove the mods to test. However, my vet sim has witnessed four animal deaths so far. Two of his own and two at the clinic. Here's the problem: with his own pets, one he didn't react at all, and the other he got the 4 hour witness death. With both the animals at his clinic, he went into deep mourning.

Is anyone who doesn't use mods having this issue?

Yes it's totally messed up for me. Sometimes they'll mourn a pet, sometimes not, and they mourn pets that die at the vet clinic too, so annoying!!!
