Do Adult Dogs Ever...?

«13
Do adult dogs ever learn to go potty on their own? I have had my dog for at least 2 Sim weeks and he has not learned to go potty on his own. He eats on his own, but will not go outside to relieve himself unless directed.

Any experience with this?

My dog has the Friendly, Smart & Loyal traits (if that’s relevant to this issue).

I have had a few dogs now and I can't quite figure out how that works. Even though mine are potty trained (I had the pop up that said they had learned to go pee outside), they don't always do it. Sometimes they will just sit in front of the door and wait for my sim to direct them to do it, and sometimes they will go do it themselves.

Interesting. When you got the pop-up notices were they adult-aged or were they puppies? I read another post where someone said they got the pop-up of a potty trained dog when it was a puppy.

They were all older dogs. I haven't played with puppies, even though I've been breeding them. I age them up pretty much as soon as possible, I don't like the puppies one bit, to be honest. xD

    Lol @Olber!

I wonder if/when I’ll get the potty-trained notification? It would be nice if I could keep track of his progress.

My poodle,Polly, always runs outside to do her business. The only time I direct her to go is right before bed. However, she never seems to go when we are on walks..

Aww @SoulPunk - Polly sounds like a good dog!

My dog only seems to pee during walks.

When mine peed in the house and I scolded him, he became instantly potty trained. But for some reason if you direct them to pee outside over and over again nothing happens. I know it’s not ideal but I would just wait for an accident and then you can train them.
    Happy Simming!

One of my border collies hasn't learned to pee outside by herself yet she keeps needing to be told.
Maybe she had the notification or she didn't, I dunno. I got 3 dogs I lose track xD

I have the same problem. Two of my dogs always wait in front of the door. The other five have already learned to go outside and some of them are even younger then these two

Ahhh this is the missing link. I will wait until he relieves himself indoors and will scold him. I will report back when I do this.

@AmySims09 & @Mikado-chan try this and see if it works. :)

@AmySims09 I know :D I had four but than my she-dog gave birth to three puppies. My sim has no time for herself lol

i do not know the answer to this personally since im playing a rags to riches game and adopted a stray just this morning but could it be because the door is locked maybe if you dont already get them a doggy door

Doors are definitely not locked. I think it's some kind of bug. I noticed that both of my dogs have smart trait same as @TheSimsBoi13 's dog. Maybe it's bugged because none of my other dogs have this trait and there are no problems with them.

Both of my dogs are potty trained. I walked outside, and called them over. I told them to do their business. I did this maybe 4-5 times, and I got a pop up for each one saying, Congratulations! Your pet has learned to go outside. I didn't have to scold them at all.

well i could see that LOL but hay that would be helpful with an apartment if you lock the door so they dont run off while your at work and you have a balcony put down the paper.

suddenly im curious can pets be paper trained? i know we have the decor item does it attract them?

I've had pop-ups telling me they have learned, but they still want to be told to go out. It is really frustrating.

Okay an update from me on this issue.

My two adult-aged dogs will pee outside (after a day or two of whining at the door), but they will not poop outside or even inside unless my sim directs them to potty. This is really frustrating, because all they do is sit at the door and whine.

My dog has the Friendly, Smart & Loyal traits (if that’s relevant to this issue).

Just put in a doggie door, and encourage him to go potty. then you get a pop-up that says he can now go out to potty himself. and they will use the doggie door, but if you have a porch they will wet your porch, so if you like you can take them to the yard. :) have fun
we'll give you a full refund. Just make sure you make your request within 24 hours after you first launch the game, within seven days from your date of purchase, or within seven days from the game's release date if you pre-ordered, whichever comes first.

I also had a border collie with the smart trait, and she will not learn the potty trait. But my other dog, who doesnt have smart learned to potty is 10 seconds flat.. i think the smart trait is bugged

@dmeta @AmySims09 I think you both are onto something. My dog with the smart trait has not learned to go potty outside. My other dog that has the sleuth, glutton & hairy traits has learned to go potty outside in just 2-3 sim days. We've had the other dog for a few sim weeks now - still hasn't learned to go potty. He has the smart, loyal & friendly traits. I'm thinking there's a bug with smart as you both suggested.

I've finally noticed it too. I've had households where the dogs go outside like they should and now I've got one where both don't won't go unless they're about to have an accident.
