Game deletes all my saves after returning back to main menu

So apperently I experienced an annoying bug just now. When I create a family from "new game" and go to the world screen to move them into a house I clicked main menu and exited without saving then BAM! All of my savings were gone. Well actually they weren't gone there were a saves file still full of my saves but game couldn't read it so I can't my saves in the game. Can this actually be a bug? Do I have to back up my saves all the time?
