OK, now bring some of the downstairs out a little, like for a side room or a porch, and make a roof on it from the first floor. This is where the problem comes in. That roof on the first floor will break through the open space in the wall. It's no problem if you just want to make a box house. But if you want to make something other than a box, the roof will come in.

You can build a loft, it just takes a bit of using the games build mode, place your 1st story down, go up a floor and using the fence decking place the room as you want for your loft
you can now knock out the floor you don't want any longer,
use the room tool to draw your outer walls
draw the upper walls around the other part of the room so the room closes
Go up to 3rd floor and use the no wall decking tool to place over your loft so that there is a flat roof, once this is done you can now place a roof on it and then drag it to cover the whole house.
"If you could read my mind, I'm pretty sure you'd be traumatized for life"
OK, guys. I know you can place a roof on the top floor of a square building with a loft in it. That is not my problem. If you have any sort of protruding areas on the first floor, you cannot place roof on that floor because it will come into the room with the loft. Please see my pictures for examples of what I mean. I'm really not sure how to explain it clearer.

Actually you don't need the ceiling for a roof to go on.
I know you don't need the ceiling for the roof to go on! That isn't the problem. I seriously do not know how to explain this clearer. I don't know where the breakdown is. PLEASE, look at my pictures. Can someone please help me explain? I'm about tearing my hair out here.

I built a home with a loft from house plans I found online a long time ago. It's called Willow Wedge. Here's an overhead view of the loft:
A couple different angles:
A view looking up from the living room. You can see that it's a closed room because of the ceiling above and from underneath the floor, the ceiling over the kitchen:
Here's an outside side view of the entire house:
And a link to the entire slideshow if you want to see full details of the build:
Sid, add a porch to the front of that and maybe a side room. Make the first floor larger than the lofted area. Now make a roof over the first floor areas and pull it across. Your roof will break into that inside space. You can try to use the single pieces and create the roof piece by piece, but a lot of the time the roof still either comes inside or doesn't reach that wall, so you have a gap.

🐸🐸🐸🐸. Nope. Even if you place the second story roof first, the first floor roof still breaks through.
@Karababy52 The roof you used was different from the one I did, but how did you make yours flush to the wall? When I use those pieces they either don't reach the wall or break through still, depending on how far I pull them.

@Piperbird I'm sorry, I honestly don't remember. I made that house over 1-1/2 years ago. I think I just plopped it on and it stayed. I'll have to load up that build (if I can find it) and take a look.
And then here is what I mean about trying to use the single roof pieces to create the roof around the room. Besides not being anything near what I wanted the build to look like, it still comes through the wall.

@Piperbird Looking at my build again, just from the pictures so far, it looks to me that I used separate pieces for the first story roofing on either side and I pulled in the over hang edges using the arrows to shorten them. Did you try that?

No, it's OK. I love to make lofts, and use them a lot. But unless it's a box, I can't figure out how to keep the roof outside the room.

ETA:
I love the rich colors you used in it. Vibrant yet calming.
Saying "not to be rude", then blatently being rude does not excuse rude behavior.
! Really! Ima go try this right now! If this works, you are a hero. No, a GOD. BRB.

Thank you! I made it for one of my musician Sims.

The build is correct, with the loft, but pull that roof through, like in my pictures.
