Avoid Windows Creator update for now - FPS issue solved

UPDATED title
Hello smart people, my fps is running high. I'm on Windows 10 and installed the new creator update. There were issues with the screen blinking out every time I started playing a video so I rolled back to the previous version. Now when I start my Sims 3 game there is a thin white border on the right side and bottom of the screen instead of being just plain black, this is there until the logo comes up. That worried me so I checked my FPS and it's running high. Another issue is while I am running Sims, my desktop and anything open on it goes super bright. This goes back to normal as soon as I exit and the game closes. The game brightness looks normal. I am playing full screen, but I hit the windows key to get to my desktop.

I've checked all my settings. Nvidia is set to Vsync on for TS3w.exe. Intel graphics is set to 60 fps. These two things used to keep my fps at 60 or below. Now it's not working.

Oh also I have tried updating through the Nvidia site, which had me going in circles cause it said I needed to install java to get the auto detect to work, so I did. It still says I need to install java. :rage:

But I did check through the computer device manager by right clicking and both intel and NVidia say my drivers are updated to the latest version. I would so appreciate any help.

Okay been reading other threads (shoukd have done that first) and I'm going to try the Nvidia inspector. But that still doesn't explain why my screen goes so bright when my game boots up? I mean see through icons bright. It's crazy.

Nvidia direct drivers are for desktop not laptop. they give you warnings before downloading drivers to check with your laptop manufacturer. Some may not be compatible with laptop video cards. I would try re-updating your drivers from the lenovo web by searching for you make and model laptop there.
  • ZeeGeeZeeGee Posts: 5,356 Member
@phoebebebe13 I will try that. Thank you.

@ZeeGee Your very welcome. I was also reading the sims 4 section. Someone was having issues with their video card. They have AMD and desktop but they claim a new windows 10 update was causing them issues. I don't know if this is effecting everyone. I don't have windows 10 . See last few posts in this thread on windows 10 update. http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/916997/game-will-no-longer-run-was-fine#latest

@phoebebebe13 do you know if I can download the latest version of my videocard drivers on the NVIDIA website? I have a laptop. Should I go to the HP website instead?

@Jean yes you should update your drivers on the HP web if you have a laptop. Nvidia direct download drivers is for desktop

On a somewhat related note, I don't think I've read a single report from a player saying that the new Win 10 Creator Update thing is doing anything good at all for their TS3 games. Is there some benefit to it that's being missed here?

@phoebebebe13 Really? Because I see on the website it states '' Notebook '' :) Just wondering what's best to do..

Reasoning for saying this, is because the latest version on the HP website is Aug. 5th 2015, while the one ( notebook ) on NVIDIA website is from begin this month.
    What's wise to do?

I would contact HP and ask if they have any newer drivers

Some people are installing it for the "game mode" it offers. It manages system resources so the system can focus more on the game vs background task. The benefit is very little. More often than not, it does the opposite for those with a dedicated card + a decent cpu.The only people who might see an improvement are those with integrated graphics. This is what I've gathered from reading reviews on game mode. Right now creators update is an option. It's assumed eventually it will auto update on it's own. I'm not installing it and when it installs itself, I'm going to turn it off.

I updated my drivers from Lenovo and it reinstalled GeForce. :grimace: I don't remember why but I remember uninstalling that because it doesn't play well with Sims 3.

Anyway, I thought my brightness issue was fixed at first. I launched my Sims 3, looked at the desktop and everything was normal, yay. But after I reset the options menu back to high quality on most of the options, the excruciating desktop brightness was back. So weird. How are the options settings in my game affecting how my desktop looks?!

@igazor I didn't see any benefits at all. I accidentally hit the 'update and restart' instead of just 'restart' or I wouldn't be in this position. I think for now Sims 3 players should avoid this update like the plague.

    @ZeeGee
You don't need to use Gforce Experience even if it's installed. I just keep it on my desktop so It informs me of driver updates. I don't use it to install drivers or have it run my games

@phoebebebe13 what if they cannot tell me there's a newer one? Would you still suggest to download the one at the HP site? That one is from nearly 2 years ago..
Also, where could I contact hp online? Haven't seen any option to do so! Could be me..

I'm considering a complete wipe and start over on this laptop to get rid of whatever that creator update did to my machine. It's a 500 GB ssd so might add another 500 while I'm at it. It seems like a relatively simple thing that I could do myself I think. Am I right? I found a 500 SSD drive on Amazon for $169.00

So if I do that windows 10 will need updating of course, but will it update all the way to this creator thing? Or is that still optional?
  • Dusty_BootsDusty_Boots Posts: 236 Member
@ZeeGee I believe that you can just do a rollback on the update. Much much easier & quicker than a wipe.
How to rollback & uninstall Windows 10 Creators Update
Funny, I'd read a little about that app but decided against it. It seems aimed at boosting low-to-mid end PC performance, which testing seems to bear out. But it actually seems to detract performance from high-end PCs.

Depends on if your laptop can fit another drive and if you will void the warranty. I recommend following the link Dusty posted here instead. It tells you how to rollback so no wipe necessary. Right now, Creators Update is optional. I read somewhere if it becomes an automatic update then there will be a way to disable it.

@Dusty_Boots I already tried the roll back and it didn't solve the problems it caused. :( I do have a gaming laptop so what you said sure applies in my case.

@Simasaurus09 Thanks. I'm struggling for time right now so that's good to hear.

I've had the update for at least a week. It hasn't affected my game that I can tell. FPS is still fine, my Nvidia Inspector settings were preserved as far as I recall, which surprised me. I think I updated my Nvidia drivers right after though. I'll have to look into this "game mode" @Simasaurus09 mentions. I wonder if it would help any. I wonder if it's even on, lol.

@TreyNutz Glad you haven't experienced the problems. Actually I had more problems when I rolled back from the update than when I originally had it installed.

I'm wondering if my problems are also connected to the Creator Update. I don't have the brigthness issue you are having, but I have awful screen tearing issue which I could not solve. Also the v-sync stopped working for me and I only could get it to work with Nvidia Inspector. What is weird is that it only happens with TS3. TS4 works fine (if you don't count awful constant cooling when playing the game).

Did you install the Creators Update? Right now it's not automatic so you would know if you have it. Did this all start after installing it? You can try rolling back.
