I love history too and think this story is great. It's sad her baby girl was a stillborn, but that did happen more often back then.

This is good! I stumbled upon it looking for something to read! Im doing something similar, but mine is more story based. I started in the Edwardian era. I planned on turning mine into a legacy, I actually have every year planned out when babies should be born in everything! Im using the Sims 4 though (: I love your writing style!

I'm gonna give yours a read then! I love the Edwardian Era. I wish we could bring back some of the clothing style, but without the social code. ;) haha

Im using CC in mine, and its becoming a real pain to find historically accurate clothes. Honestly, I love that era but it will be so much easier when I reach prohibition lol.

So freakin true. Even the CC websites don't have that much. On TSR I found like 5 dresses.

DID YOU KNOW: Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas A. Watson conducted the first telephone conversation between New York and San Francisco in 1915. Daylight savings time went into effect in 1918. By the middle of 1918, the United States military forces had over one million troops in Europe fighting in World War 1.

The family dealt with their sorrow over the recent tragedy in different ways. Zachariah threw himself into his work, rarely emerging from the study. This suited Delilah just fine, since she wanted to be alone. She felt numb, and was unaware that weeks had gone by. Ruth was too young to understand the severity of the situation, or to notice anything different. David however, felt everyone's emotions, though he did not know how to deal with the adults, and mainly entertained Ruth. He become more withdrawn and quiet during this time.

"Mama, I picked these flowers for you. I remembered cosmos were your favorite. Please don't be sad...."
Delilah held the bright red flowers in her hand, and felt the walls within her breaking down. Healing tears started to flow.
"Mama, did I do something wrong", David asked.
"No sweetheart, I'm just feeling happy," Delilah said. Her eyes made her look exhausted, but she managed a small smile.
"Well then, why are you crying?"

    KToY8gY.jpg

Delilah knelt down to give David a tight embrace.

"I was just wondering...how I became blessed with such a sweet son like you."
    "I love you mama."
"I love you too David. To the moon and back."

Years passed, and the kids grew older. Ruth was the perfect lady, who also showed high intelligence. She was inquisitive, yet also mature for her age.

    NOB9p34.jpg

She could often be found in her room reading whatever she could get her hands on. Most girls her age that could read, preferred fiction, yet she always read nonfiction, preferring to learn about the world around her and how things worked.

    iJK9GtA.jpg

David was becoming a handsome young man, yet as siblings, their bond remained strong. Unlike the other boys around town, he was not annoyed when his sister tagged along with him, and when Ruth pestered their parents with too many questions, David would try his best to satisfy her curiosity.

    km6NT4U.jpg

Ruth was ladylike, and not rebellious, yet something about David brought out her fun side.

    ZV4zOlQ.jpg

David was now shadowing his father, learning how to manage mine operations and budgeting. When he needed to unwind, he escaped to the local 'watering hole' he liked to call it, although his father would not approve...if he found out. The miners that frequented the establishment didn't inform Mr.Wallingsford that his son was hanging around, they liked David's easy going and humorous personality.

    oGClS3u.jpg

"Hey David, this round is on the house if you can do another one of your impersonations", said the bartender.
"Give me a name and I'll give it my best shot!"
Someone sitting at the bar, who was listening, threw out a suggestion.
"Hey, do Donald Thompson, from the council!"
David stood up, cleared his throat, and shouted for all the room to hear:
"No no NO, we can't allow those shady ladies in town, they will give Gold Ridge a bad name! Don't they have any decency?? They shouldn't be parading their private lives like that, they should make it secret, like my affairs!"

    EiRmOMn.jpg

David seemed to be in his prime whenever he was given the chance for an audience.
"Hey, aren't you one of those ranchers coming through town", David asked a newcomer.
"Yes, I am stopping for the night and continuing on my journey to St. Louis. I'll be selling the cattle there for what I can get."
"Well then, you should get this joke more than anyone. If a cowboy rides into town on Friday and three days later leaves on Friday, how does he do it?"
"Hm...I'm not sure, that's a tough one", the stranger said.
"The horse's name is Friday!," David laughed.
"Well alright you got me there."

    h4YkSI0.jpg

David made his way home, feeling particularly buzzed, unaware that Zachariah had gotten there earlier than usual, and was waiting for him.
"What are you thinking, hanging around a place like that?? The type of people that go into those establishments have no morals, they have no concern for the town's name, and it's an embarrassment to be told my own son is going in and out of there! Haven't you thought of what it could look like, for the mayor's son to be frequenting a questionable business?"

    pkVfj68.jpg

    David had enough.
"How about you? Haven't you thought about what it's like to be the mayor's son, to know that my father seems to only care about his reputation and the town, and not about his own children? You know what, I don't even want to go into this with you. I'll be upstairs. I won't even bother with dinner. I know you don't want to see my shameful face across the table."

    zo03dbc.jpg

David sat on his bed, fuming about the argument. He was almost an adult, why couldn't he do what he wished? He was doing just fine learning about the mining trade, what did it matter what he did in his own free time? He didn't care what the council thought of him, besides, they were all such judgemental, stick in the mud type of people, he didn't need their approval.

    sOhjfrR.jpg

He went to his sister's bedroom, and knocked on the door, but no one answered.
Maybe she is still at the quilting group with Mama, but I am sure she won't mind if I borrow something real quick, he thought.
He started rummaging through her large bookshelf, filled to the brim.
Cmon, there's gotta be a book of maps in this massive library.

DID YOU KNOW: On January 21, 1919, 35,000 shipyard workers in Seattle went on strike seeking wage increases. Theodore Roosevelt dies January 6, 1919. The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I, signed on 28 June 1919.

"You've been working on strategies all night, what is the matter dear?"
Zachariah furrowed his eyebrows, trying to calm his nerves with a game of chess. His toughest competitor had always been himself.
"That boy doesn't know a thing about responsibility. He goofs around, and messes things up, yet never learns!"
Delilah smiled, trying to ease his tension.
"Zachariah, he DOES know responsibility, and he does work hard, it's just that he gets distracted. I am sure when he gets older, he will learn from his mistakes. He will have to take the reins sometime, perhaps you are just not sharing them enough. He is destined for great things, but so far, you've given him trivial jobs."
    Zachariah began to get frustrated.
"I don't trust him with crucial jobs because he hasn't demonstrated his abilities for the menial things! Just a few days ago, he left a carbide lamp in the mine without supervision and almost started a fire! And instead of investing his casual hours on mature hobbies or forging business relationships, he is down at the saloon talking with tramps and gangsters! I care an awful lot about this town because I forged it from nothing, I wanted this town to be safe for him and Ruth, but he isn't concerned about that at all!"
Delilah hung her head in defeat. Perhaps she would try again in the morning, after he slept off his anger.

    0dHGlSb.jpg

"Father wants me to take over the mining business someday, but he doesn't ever give me a chance to shine! I ask to make an important decision or to talk with one of our customers, and he tells me to just sit and observe! And when he wants me out of his hair, he tells me to look at the mines or make sure the men aren't slacking, and somehow that's not good enough for him either!"
Ruth was the only person he could trust to vent his frustrations. He would tell Delilah, but he was tired of hearing her say to be patient with his father and that he means well.
    "Papa is a perfectionist."
"You're tellin me!", David said. He continued, "maybe that's why you both get along so well. Both of you are perfect, with sticks up your butts!"
    Ruth laughed, shoving his shoulder.
"Nuh -uh! I can be fun!"
David laughed along with her, but inside, he was hiding a secret. He felt that he had to enjoy this moment more than ever, because he wasn't sure when he would see her next.

    TidaH7m.jpg

Later that night, he sat at his desk and wrote a letter for his mother. He didn't want them to think anything bad had happened to him, and wanted a chance to explain himself.

    fE7DoGb.jpg

Early the next morning, while the rest of the family still slept, he got dressed and slipped out of the house.
"You be good Goldie, I won't be around for awhile. I'll miss you bunches, but I promise, I'll be back."
He jogged to the train station with a single suitcase, and caught the next train heading East.
Part of him felt guilty to leave his mother and sister behind, and the other part of him knew that he needed to take this journey for himself.

    QyzkTDG.jpg

Delilah knew something wasn't right when Huan announced that breakfast was ready, and David wasn't at the table.
She went up to his room, but he wasn't there. Instead, there was a note on the writing desk addressed to her.

    Mama,
I have left on the train going East, towards Chicago. Please don't worry about me, I will be fine.
I need to get away from everything here, I think this trip will do me some good. I just need a chance to be
on my own, to trust my own instincts and spread my wings. I feel suffocated here.
I don't know how long I will be gone, but I promise I will be back. I will return when I feel ready.
    I will write you often.

I love you, and wish you happiness.

    -David

    tiHlsMn.jpg

    "Zachariah, David is gone!"
Delilah had ran downstairs clutching the letter, crying hysterically.
    "What do you mean 'gone'?"
"He left this letter, he says he is going to Chicago! This is your fault! If you hadn't pushed him away and been so hard on him, he would never have left!"
Zachariah grabbed the letter, reading it with concern.
"Delilah, I know you are worried about him, I am worried too. I really am. In fact, I badly want to hop on the next train and bring him back. But perhaps this is something he DOES need to do. Maybe this trip will help him grow up. This town is all he knows. Being on his own might make him a better man. We need to just respect his choice."
Delilah sobbed, nearly fainting. Zachariah escorted her to the couch, where she remained most of the day.
She felt as if she had now lost two children.

    Dear Mama,

I hope you are well and happy. I have arrived here in Chicago, and wow what a sight! The buildings reach right up to the sky. I have never seen so many people in my life! It seems everyone here has a fancy car, maybe I'll get myself a Rolls Royce. The government prohibits alcohol now, but not to worry, I still have fun at these 'speakeasies', they call them. They serve alcohol there, but I can't tell you too much, it would spoil the secret. I love the Jazz music there, and watching the pretty girls do the Charleston, and even got them to teach me. The people here dress so suave, I will have to go shopping. I feel so out of place.

I am having fun, and I am safe, please do not worry about me.

    -David

    2PnEMdg.jpg

    Dear Mama,

I visited a movie theater today. Apparently, the ticket master said I should come at night, because that is where all the action is. I'll know that for next time. Speaking of night time, Chicago is so bright! There are so many lights here, it's almost like it's day time! I particularly enjoy the Green Mill Jazz club, there are some really talented musicians here. Although I would be lying if I said I didn't also come for the girls they call flappers. But don't worry, I am behaving myself!

    -David

    0BsVAq7.jpg

    Dear Mama,

I had a wonderful time watching the White Sox play at the stadium. When I get back, I outta get a team together, I know the other fellas would love it. I've been hearing the games on the radio in my apartment, but it's just not the same as watching it in person. I met a special gal at the Jazz Club a couple nights ago, and we've really hit it off. She isn't like the other women here. She is funny, genuine, and a sweetheart. Her name is Virginia. I really think you would like her. She has been giving me a tour of the city.
I have been missing home. The city is glamorous, but there is nothing quite like home.

    -David

    IA4MzPC.jpg

    Dear Mama,
Virginia and I have been spending plenty of time together. She has been so swell, and I am torn between being with her and coming home. I knew then, what I had to do. While we were at a party at a dance hall, I strummed up the courage to propose to her. I bought her a diamond ring, although I wish I had one of the diamonds from the mine to put in the ring instead, though I really didn't think I was going to meet someone special. She said yes! I feel like the luckiest man alive! We are making arrangements to leave in a couple days to come home, to give her a chance to say goodbye to her folks. I can't wait for you and father to meet her.

    -David

    NITa7HV.jpg

"Oh my word, Zachariah, our son has gone and gotten himself eloped! How could he do such a thing! We don't know a thing about this woman! This trip was a terrible thing, you should have gotten him when he left!"
"Now dear, let's calm down a moment. This could be just the thing for him. Being married can change a man, and hopefully this will give David an incentive to do right, if not for the town, then perhaps for his new wife. Let's give this a chance."

Those kids are adorable, and this was like the most emotional thing I have ever seen.... Like Mr. Watergate would say, "That was the most unprofessional sentence ever." BUT OH MY GOSH! So many feels. All in all, amazing work. I can't wait to see more!

I love this legacy! Especially the historical tidbits. But what's really interesting to me is how it feels like it could have been a real family in that time period. Great job!!!

DID YOU KNOW: The Roaring Twenties was a decade of great economic growth and widespread prosperity. The automobile, movie, radio, and chemical industries skyrocketed during the 1920s. Electricity production almost quadrupled. The United States and Canada became more anti-immigration in outlook during this period.

It had been a couple years since David was gone. Delilah had paced around the house anxiously the day he was expected to arrive. Later that evening, there was a knock on the door. There stood David, looking like a different man. His hair was slicked back with gel, he wore attire from the city, and he had gotten taller. Delilah was taken aback by the change.
"Hello Mama", David said with excitement.
Delilah went to pull him into a hug, but stopped short when she saw someone next to him she didn't recognize.
"Mama, I want you to meet my wife...."

    pofR44i.jpg

"...This is Virginia, she is the special lady I was writing to you about."

    hjSyDoW.jpg

Delilah was shocked by Virginia's appearance. She wore a shorter dress with a plunging neckline, and from what she could tell, there definitely wasn't a corset underneath. She wore bold makeup, which around here, was associated with prostitutes. Her hair was cut shorter than Delilah would have liked. Virginia seemed unfazed by Delilah's gaping stare.
"I am just so giddy to finally meet you Mrs. Wallingsford! You are the bee's knees according to your son! I have heard so much about you."
Delilah shook her hand, unsure of what to say.
    "Um..yes...likewise."

    7jN8iHb.jpg

She turned to her son, looking him up and down.
"David, you have grown so much. You look so different since we last saw you."
"It's probably the clothes, Virginia says they make me look mature."
"Well...either way, I am relieved to see you back home."
Delilah smiled, and they shared a hug. She tried not to hug him too tight, and was sad when she had to let go.

    e8J5cJa.jpg

Zachariah had been watching the reunion from the dining room, judging Virginia silently.
"Father, I really am so happy to see you! If you would let me, I am ready to dive right into the business. I picked up a few ideas from Chicago I feel you would like to implement."

    CpDf1WP.jpg

Zachariah couldn't help but express his discontentment with Virginia. Even though he wanted to try his best to start over when his son came back, he felt the old emotions coming back up to the surface.
"I see nothing has changed, as far as you and women are concerned..."

    4c2cHFv.jpg

Zachariah was expecting David to have his usual outburst, but instead, his son pleaded with him.
"Please father, don't dismiss her before you get to meet her. Sure she is more progressive, but is a good woman. I think you would find her pleasant."

    PrMIXrh.jpg

"How do you do Mr. Wallingsford? It's a pleasure to meet ya!"
Zachariah bowed his head slightly, shooting a displeased sidewards glance at David.
"I am sure you two have had a long journey, trains can be a rough ride. Perhaps you should settle in."
"Oh father, we didn't take the train back. I drove back in my own car!"
"Hmmm....well, I am sure the trip was long either way."

    GloDO9R.jpg

While David and Virginia took their luggage upstairs to David's room, Delilah and Zachariah found a moment to talk in private.
"I was fine with David taking this journey. I wasn't upset when he wrote that he got eloped. But had I known he would marry this type of woman, I would not have allowed it!"

    Jnf6cag.jpg

    Delilah agreed.
"I have heard about these women. They are loose ladies, who act like men, drinking and smoking in public. They are rebellious women who have no consideration for how ladies should dress and act. They really aren't the marrying type. David has never paid much attention to plainer girls. This doesn't shock me. I am more...disappointed, because there isn't anything we can do."
Zachariah scratched his chin in thought.
"There had to be a way to void this marriage."
"Zachariah, that is something I refuse to do. I believe that marriage is a holy and binding contract. As much as I disapprove, I cannot break this. This is a reality we need to accept, no matter how much we dislike it."

    0RbnPHl.jpg

There was one person that was noticeably absent from the reunion downstairs. David was not the only one to change in the time he was gone. Ruth had also grown significantly, and was almost a young woman. She was almost done with school, and already knew that she wanted to be a schoolteacher. She was agreeable, never causing trouble. She was a dainty girl, yet confident.

    O77A07n.jpg

"Hello little sister! I've missed you so much", David said as he entered her room.
"Is that so? I would never have guessed, since you never wrote me."

    WXqO2T2.jpg

"I figured Mama would share the letters with you..."
"David, do not misunderstand, I am not upset that you left. I'm not even upset that you got eloped with a woman you barely know, a woman none of us got to be introduced to. That is something you live with, not me. However, I am deeply upset and angry that you didn't tell me you were leaving. I thought we trusted each other to share everything."
David didn't realize how much his decision to leave had affected her.
"I'm so sorry Ruth. I don't know why I didn't tell you. I just...felt that it was something I should do for myself. I thought maybe you would convince me to stay."

    Mnmk5ya.jpg

    "I appreciate the apology."
She walked past him to the door.
"Now let's meet this mystery woman."

    WW2PiZM.jpg

Delilah made dinner, and Virginia was trying to break the tension.
"oh my, this dinner is just splendid Mrs. Wallingsford! There is nothing quite like a home cooked meal."
"Do you not cook often Virginia?"
"I can cook, I just spend more time eating out at restaurants and clubs, so it's rare that I am ever home, cooking for myself."
    "Oh....well...I wouldn't know."

    wAI1TgX.jpg

Ruth was trying to be accepting of Virginia, after all, she did love her brother, and by extension, she felt she should get to know her and have an open mind.
"So, how did you and my brother meet?"
"Well, I was sitting at the bar of the Green Mill Jazz Club, all by my lonesome. I was feeling down and out because I had gone through another break up. And your brother approached me from across the smoky room, asking me, 'Guess what I am wearing?' I had no idea who he was, but I said, 'A pinstripe shirt?' and he says 'No, the smile you gave me!' I laughed and laughed, and I just got stuck on him. He makes me feel so goofy when I am around him."
"Well, don't let him fool you, he is the biggest dork I know."

    Cg2YzNB.jpg

At bedtime, Virginia and David talked awhile.
"Do you think they like me baby? I get the impression they don't like me very much."
"Well, I did spring this on them. They didn't even get to see us exchange our vows. They will warm up to you eventually."
    "You really think so?"
    "I know so."

David and his sister look so nice! Virginia is beautiful, but why don't David's parents seem to like her??

DID YOU KNOW: Prohibition was inconsistently enforced. In many cases, law enforcement officers were bribed to turn a blind eye to the production and consumption of alcohol. In 1920, the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote and inaugurated a decade of feminist progress. By the end of the 1920s, there were radios in more than 12 million households.
    1.11

    t4SX8ap.jpg

"Virginia and I picked it out before we made our way home. Isn't it sleek? I can't believe how cheap automobiles have become. I never dreamed I would own one."
Zachariah inspected the new car, admiring it.
"It sure is nice son! I can't believe you drove all the way over here though. I bet it was rough on the hands. We outta get you some driving gloves for Christmas."

    eEzec6U.jpg

David was happy that his father was spending quality time with him, and that things seemed to be smoothing over between them. However, he noticed that both of his parents had wrinkles on their faces where there weren't before. He had been so wrapped up in his own life, he didn't take notice that his parents were aging. Maybe it was the stress of the mine, or his absence that caused them to age more quickly. Either way, he felt slightly guilty.
"Papa, I would love to go on a road trip with you. Just the two of us. We could even go to the waterfalls you love to fish at, we wouldn't have to carry the poles and bait over there by ourselves that way."

    1jSZWDr.jpg

Zachariah hadn't heard his son call him Papa in a long time. It felt good to hear.
"You know what son....I will take you up on that sometime."

    YyDPfJW.jpg

Virginia was not having the same luck as David when it came to bonding. She tried to connect to her mother in law through music, but Delilah didn't seem to like what she played.

    j9xlT0J.jpg

"What is it you are playing there?"
"Do you like it Mrs. Wallingsford? It's my favorite song of all time, Toot Toot Tootsie Goodbye! It's got a fun beat to it don't ya think?"
"Hmmm...it's not really my taste. I prefer something more sophisticated. Hymns are much more beautiful."

    CqfC8DB.jpg

Delilah was also finding any way she could to avoid being in Virginia's company. Reading was the universal sign for 'leave me alone.'

    at9Ry99.jpg

Whenever David chatted with her however, she was all smiles and laughs, and it seemed to be more exaggerated whenever Virginia was in the same room. Delilah was turning out to be the difficult mother in law.

    riw2BTA.jpg

When Virginia was not out making friends, partying, or attached to David's side, she was listening to programs on the radio. Her favorites were Jazz and comedy stations.

    JnBl6pN.jpg

"Oh Mrs.Wallingsford, have you ever heard Sam 'n' Henry on the radio? They are a hoot! I guarantee it'll give ya a stitch in the side!"
As always, Delilah had a critical attitude for Virginia.
"I don't waste my time listening to that dribble. Besides, my quilting group takes up more than enough time. You really ought to try a handicraft instead of listening to the radio, at least you would have something to show for it. I find that radio just wastes the hours away."

    ul5driJ.jpg

David didn't seem to share the same opinions on music and radio, however. After dinner, it was a habit for David and Virginia to dance together to Jazz music.

    DChXFQh.jpg

All Delilah could do, was look on disapprovingly.

    fcTzW3O.jpg

Now that David and his father's relationship had become closer, Zachariah valued his input into the business operations.
"People don't seem to appreciate real gemstones and gold anymore David. Women nowadays go for costume jewelry. I personally find it gaudy and tacky, it's a real shame. But that is how the fashion is now, and our mine is producing more than we can sell to jewelers. If things continue like this, we might have to make some staff cuts."
David tried to remember how things were in Chicago, to get some ideas flowing.
"Well, it's true that women don't go for the expensive things anymore, but that's because we aren't using jewelry as a status symbol anymore. However, when I spent time in Chicago, I did see ladies wearing the semi precious stones, and we produce a couple of those. Put some emphasis on our turquoise production, as well as silver. Women also still wear diamonds in the evening, so we can focus on that too. I know a couple guys from Chicago that would be interested in those for earrings."

    MSk7DF3.jpg

David made some calls to his buddies, pulling favors to get product sold. This was his specialty, since he was charismatic. He was a natural born salesman.

    JLwkARV.jpg

After a long day of work, David would blow off steam by taking his wife to a dance club, something of a recent addition to Gold Ridge. Even though alcohol was forbidden, it wasn't something enforced. You simply had to be hush hush about it.

    KT9GiBJ.jpg

David was really getting into pool, and enjoyed a big of gambling with it. Virginia didn't care for the game, but was content to watch.

    z8B3XnX.jpg?1

The couple also danced the night away, learning new dance moves and tearing up the dancefloor to some Jazz or ragtime music.

    HJ61JDH.jpg

David and Virginia were very much in love, which was to be expected for the newlyweds.

    exeOHwU.jpg

"Virginia...do ever find yourself regretting moving here with me? I know this town isn't as hip as Chicago, but it has it's charm."
Virginia moved in closer to him, giving him a peck on the cheek.
"Oh hooey! That's not what I need! I've got everything to make me happy right here with you."

David and his sister look so nice! Virginia is beautiful, but why don't David's parents seem to like her??

They don't approve of the flapper lifestyle. His parents are more conservative. ;) I actually have a really funny video to show you on that:

David and Ruth grew up to be so pretty. I hope Ruth finds a mate one day. Virginia seems like a lot of fun.

DID YOU KNOW: The style of architecture in the 1920s was called Art Deco, which featured strong geometric shapes. 6 million farmers left rural life for the cities during the Roaring Twenties. Famous Flappers of the Roaring Twenties were Clara Bow, movie star Joan Crawford and Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Sorry for the delay in this chapter, my computer was experiencing problems. All is fixed now. :)

"Virginia, what is it you are doing in here? I am hearing an awful lot of bumping around all the way downstairs."

    SykGJM7.jpg

"Oh hello Mrs. Wallingsford! I was just moving some furniture around, I am redecorating! I think this place could use a more modern touch. What do you think of butter yellow paint, to brighten up the room a bit?"

    YgUAU8U.jpg

"Why do you think you have a right to change anything in OUR home? Just because you married my son, doesn't mean that you are in charge! You just don't get it do you child? You think that you can dress like a tramp, put a pile of makeup on your face, flaunt yourself all over town and act like you don't have any sense? You married my son, who happens to the son of the mayor and mine operator. Everything you do, reflects on him! You are a wife now, you need to act like one!"

    qQS8GSa.jpg

"I know what you all think of me. Most people think of me as a dumb dora, and a ditz. You all think I don't hear what everyone says about me. But I do. This town is filled with nothin' but wet blankets. Everyone here is so miserable in their own boring lives, that they talk about people who do as they please. But one thing I can say I am for certain, is I am genuine. I love honestly, and live freely. It isn't that I don't care about what people say, it's that I only care about the opinion of ONE person, that is my husband's, and he loves me for who I am. You have judged me since I arrived, because I sin differently than you do. So before you talk about me behind my back, maybe you should figure it's because I am two paces ahead of ya."

    v8hrDk1.jpg

Delilah was stunned. She hadn't realized how nasty she had been. She was so caught up in public image, that she didn't take the time to see that Virginia was in love with her son, and that they were happy together.
"Virginia....I think I owe you the sincerest of apologies. You make David happy. And as his mother, I should be happy for him. For the both of you."

    TqCviOx.jpg

Virginia felt a wave of relief.
"Well....it's quite alright. I appreciate what you just said. You know, I could really use some help with the bedroom...David and Mr. Wallingsford will be home in a couple days from their business trip and I would love to chat with ya."
    "That sounds lovely."

    lgMlPmx.jpg

They both went to work to redecorate, and the two bonded over the project.
"It looks so much happier in here doesn't it Mrs. Wallingsford?"
"Yes I agree...and just in time. The weather is so dreary."

    YFiLZdG.jpg

David and Zachariah had just gotten back from their business trip into the neighboring state, and before they had a chance to settle in completely, Zachariah complained of a pain in his chest and feeling lightheaded.

    7qSrQGT.jpg?1

On the way into the kitchen, he clutched his chest, and fell backwards onto the floor.

    XGbYdG9.jpg

Ruth was in the living room reading, when she heard the loud thud.
    "PAPA!"

    6nhTRIu.jpg

"Doctor, we have him lying in bed, but we don't know what else to do. We are worried, we need you here as quickly as possible!"
"Try to remain calm, I am on my way."

    5WkicV7.jpg

Ruth was sitting in the living room waiting for the doctor's arrival. She was always so close to both of her parents, and feared that her father wouldn't make it. His collapse was so sudden, they had no idea what the problem could be.

    Fd5ocTt.jpg

"Darling, I don't know if you can hear me. I don't think I can do this alone. We have been together so many years, I don't want to know what it's like not to have you in my life. If you can hear me, I want you to fight this. You will be ok. You have to be."

    HizKAES.jpg

The doctor stopped by, and listened to his heart beat and took his vital signs. He quickly diagnosed a heart attack, but said his arrival was too late. It seemed there was an epidemic of heart disease, but so little was known about it, and therefore there was not much he could do for Zachariah. David went into his room, but he wasn't ready to say goodbye. A part of him still felt he could pull through this.

    GQ7wySy.jpg

"Papa...you know, I still owe you a trip to the waterfalls."
    David felt his voice shaking.
"Remember the first time you took me fishing? You were so proud of me even though I only caught a guppy. But I was so darn happy about it. I still remember while we were waiting for a fish to bite, that you told me you knew I would accomplish great things. You told me to always remember that the world owed me nothing, and it was my responsibility to get what I wanted. You told me that if I did right by others, they would do right by me. I only hope I did right for you Papa."
David now felt tears collecting on his pants.
"I only wanted to make you proud. And I am so sorry for any grief I caused you. It's ok to let go...."

Later that evening, Zachariah passed away.

    anGIN5m.jpg

A week passed, and there was a large funeral procession for Zachariah. He was remembered as a beloved mayor, and fair to all. When the crowds dispersed, the family had their own small and private service in the backyard.

    xR84Wkm.jpg

Everyone in the family had something kind to say. Ruth planted some daisies after the ground had been smoothed over. After standing in silence for awhile, Ruth, Virginia, and David took each others hands, and walked back to the house.

    RETyWLg.jpg

Delilah lingered, not yet wanting to leave.
"I woke up this morning, and reached over for you, but you were not there. I feel like my heart is shattered into a million pieces. I still wait around thinking you will come home from work, and I will hear the door shut and your footsteps echo in the hallway. I cry myself to sleep every night, because it feels so lonely without you next to me. I wish I could go with you. I love you, my dearest. I always will."

    4uhYNcD.jpg?1

'Here lies Zachariah Wallingsford, father, husband, and first mayor of Gold Ridge.
His true wealth was in his generous heart.'

I took inspiration from a family I know personally. Sometimes, a family member is lost, and then another little family member comes along to distract everyone from their grief, like the sun breaking through the clouds. :)

DID YOU KNOW: It was not until the 1920s that wedding vendors began to see the true business potential of brides and their weddings. By the 1920s, the use of anesthesia in childbirth was almost universal. In 1922, Emma Read patented her invention of the baby cage, a device that let babies hang outside of apartment windows to allow them to get fresh air. (Ummmm OMG)
    2.1

    HK7oitm.jpg

David was checking on a story in the paper about the legal change of the name of the waterfall. Recently, there was a council meeting to discuss naming it "Wallingsford Falls" in honor of Zachariah. Of course, the bill was sent through with no disagreement. David's father refused for the town to be named after him, however, this change felt more fitting to his memory.

    RSmiznE.jpg

There was a soft knock on the door and Ruth entered looking solemn.

"David, as you know, George has been courting me for some time now. He wanted to know if tonight was a good time to discuss some matters with you. He wouldn't share his information with me though."

If their father had been alive, Ruth would have asked him. But David was the head of the house now, and any important family or business matters went through him now.

"Of course, and he should stay for dinner. Mom is making your favorite."

    LVoIPyS.jpg

Ruth had grown to be a beautiful and intelligent woman. After she finished school, she became a school teacher, filling the demand for their growing town. Most men were intimidated by her clever mind, but there was one man who appreciated her for it. George Shaffrey, the son of a carpenter helping to run the family business, took a liking to her, and with David's permission, started calling on her. He was a quiet and shy man, but was honest, loyal, hardworking, and kind to Ruth. He didn't know as much as she did, however, he loved to pick her brain about different subjects, and Ruth was always pleased to share her knowledge.

    ERhlYNi.jpg

That night, Delilah made Ruth's favorite dinner, Goopy Carbonara, and everyone chatted while eating. George didn't have much to say, but he listened intently to everyone.

    5GmGtFy.jpg

Delilah was fond of George, especially because he was a gentleman and helped clean up after dinner.

    RvLdAsi.jpg

George, David, and Delilah found some time to talk about his concerns in private.
"I want you both to know that your family has been so kind to me, and I appreciate the time we spend together."
    Delilah smiled, nodding approvingly.
"George, I knew your father when you were still just a baby. You resemble him so much. In fact, it was your father that built me a rocking chair and gave it to me as a gift after David was born. I am so delighted you and Ruth are together, I can't think of a more honorable man for her."
"Thank you Mrs. Wallingsford. That means a lot to me, and I hope you keep that in mind because there is something I would like to ask. I would like to have your blessing to have your daughter in marriage."

    2DgRiq0.jpg

"No kidding? That is marvelous news George! We would love to have you as part of the family", David said excitedly.

"Ruth dear, we need you to come downstairs for a minute", Delilah said, trying to contain her enthusiasm.

    1Qj9fTS.jpg

George stood up when Ruth entered the room, nervously handing her a bouquet of flowers.
"Aww George, they are purple, my favorite color! This is so sweet of you."
"That isn't all I have for you"....

    kXLj1NT.jpg

"Would you do me the honor of being my wife Ruth?"
    "Yes! Oh of course!"

    F7DntYy.jpg

"Oh sweetheart I am so delighted to see you happy. He is a good man", Delilah said, hugging Ruth through happy tears.
"Thank you Mama. I know I am lucky."

    dziENR4.jpg

"I know you would have wanted Papa to give him his blessing. It's not the same without him, but, I am happy for you sis."
"Thank you David. This means so much to me to have you do this. I just wish he could have met George."

    8UrXScq.jpg

After the excitement of the engagement news, everyone headed to bed. Virginia had been inspecting herself in the mirror, trying to find some changes in her body. She found out she was pregnant, and didn't know what to expect.

    Q5YRhGS.jpg

"Hey baby, I have some news to share with you."
David laid next to her in bed, about to sleep for the night.
    "What is it Virginia?"
"I'm pregnant....I already knew but I didn't want to overshadow Ruth's engagement news. I am planning on telling everyone later so she can have her moment."

    ufVOBAJ.jpg

"Really? You're pregnant? First Ruth gets engaged and now this! This day can't get any better!"

    EFxbxJ6.jpg

"I can't wait to tell Mama. I love you."
    "I love you too baby."

    OzVQ6JS.jpg

After planning the wedding for a couple weeks, everything was set. Ruth and George wanted a simple wedding with the family. Delilah was ready to splurge on something fancy, but Ruth politely declined. She never liked being in the spotlight.

"Are you two dressed and ready? We are leaving soon to get to church."

    uFxxnyU.jpg

"I'm afraid I can't make it to the wedding Mrs.Wallingsford", Virginia said sadly.
"And why not? This kind of thing only happens once dear!"
Virginia shuffled her feet, feeling bad to have to reveal the news on a day that should be all about Ruth.
    "Well...I'm ill because...I'm pregnant."
"Oh child this is wonderful news! I haven't felt this happy in so long! Hurry, Ruth is downstairs, let's tell her before we go."

    QrBtMqK.jpg

"No hold on! Let's wait until after the ceremony. I want this to be her big day. Just tell her I couldn't make it because I came down with something. She will understand."

    q68TovN.jpg

The wedding ceremony took place that afternoon, near the end of Autumn. It was a crisp, cool day, but the sky was clear and the weather was beautiful.

    3DroH0u.jpg

Ruth was a beautiful blushing bride as the couple embarked on the first day of what was to be a long and happy life together.

    39wqWRf.jpg

The family gathered by the river to take a final picture before Ruth and George parted ways to go to their new home. Ruth Wallingsford was now Ruth Shaffrey.

    eDHL1hJ.jpg

Meanwhile, as the months passed, Virginia's pregnancy was going well. David was an attentive husband.

    p6wSY8C.jpg

Delilah was smiling more now, and although she still missed Zachariah terribly, she was plenty preoccupied with helping Virginia.
"Hello little one, this is your Grandma speaking! I can't wait to meet you! You are going to be so spoiled."

    OfdaDT8.jpg

Finally, the big day was here. Virginia went into labor, and David drove her to the hospital to deliver the baby. It was a cold winter day, and snow was falling in a steady drift.

    zi5dWJ7.jpg

After recovering for a day, they were able to come back home, with their new son, Robert Wallingsford.
"I swear I think he looks more like me."
"How can you tell Virginia? He was just born yesterday!"

    GQEgWCl.jpg

"Hey little guy! Everything is going to be ok."

DID YOU KNOW: The revival of the Klan in 1915 started in the Deep South, but spread to other parts of America. The Emergency Quota Act of 1921 and the National Origins Act of 1924 made it much more difficult for immigrants to enter the USA. Only 5% of the American population owned a third of the wealth, while 42% of the population were living below the poverty line.

The next few chapters will be dealing with a sensitive subject: Racism. If this is something you are not comfortable with, I would suggest skipping these next few updates. This was a growing problem prevalent in the 1920s and even so today, until membership in the Klan tapered off in the 1930s because of the Great Depression and then was mostly disbanded. Because this is a historical legacy, it was something I wanted to cover.
    2.2

    zflXpyt.jpg

"I just can't choose which wallpaper I love more Mrs. Wallingsford. I know I like this baby blue color, but honestly, I could go either way on the stripes."
"I don't want to be the one that makes that decision for you since Robert is your son and you will be the one that sees his room an awful lot more than anyone else, but you really should make a choice soon. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but babies grow up so quick, you'll wonder where the time went."
"I know, I just love interior decorating. Thank you so much again for letting us use one of the spare bedrooms as his nursery. When he is old enough to sleep in his crib on a regular schedule, I'll move his crib out of our bedroom and into here."

    bTp4m1r.jpg

"It's quite alright Virginia! And don't forget, you have me to help you. I'll never forget the help I received from my closest friends, and to be honest, having a Grandson around has given me renewed vitality. In a way, you are helping me too."
Virginia smiled appreciatively, knowing the hardship Delilah had been through after Mr. Wallingsford passed away.

    tDn1clM.jpg

Meanwhile, David was downstairs talking to a distraught employee.
"I really don't want to lose you Mr.Johnson, we need a man of your work ethic...I promise I won't ignore this issue, I will do what it takes to make sure you feel safe...listen, if it makes you feel better, I will even approach the city hall and talk to the council about this issue on your behalf. I won't even mention your name. Ok...take care."

    38636jq.jpg

Virginia was walking downstairs when she overheard David on the phone.
"What is getting you all up in a lather?"
"Well, it seems some members of the Klan have made their permanent residence here, and they aren't too fond of the fact that I hire people who aren't white. Mr.Johnson is an African American, and he was just on the phone complaining that some of the members are harassing him on his way to the mine, and they've harassed some of the workers of Asian descent as well. So far things haven't gotten physical, but he is worried that they will escalate to that point."

    0fSvBOG.jpg

"Oh, this is complicated. I'll level with you, while living in Chicago, I witnessed my fair share of racism, and I know people who think that way. Chicago, as well as the big cities in New York, are full of immigrants so I guess I never thought of immigrants as a bad thing. I thought this was a bigger deal down in the South, why are they here?"
David shook his head, not sure of the answer.
"I thought so too. They certainly have a bigger following down in the South, but it seems this time around, this organization is having a far larger revival. Listen, I need to take a trip down to city hall, I'll be home in a jiffy alright?"

    PXVzfXh.jpg

    Delilah came downstairs, holding Robert.
"Where did David go? It's getting late for him to be dealing with any business right now."
"He said he is heading down to City Hall to take care of an issue. I don't mind, I am so tired out anyways because of the baby."
"Consider your blessings child. Back in my day, there were no fancy hospitals to help with childbirth. We gave birth at home. And our midwives were women who had a child before, they weren't necessarily nurses. So what issue is David taking care of so late anyways?"

    qrOkeg6.jpg

"He said the Klan has moved here? And they are harassing his workers. I hope this doesn't change the whole town. I like it here, it's a wonderful town to raise Robert. I don't need anything else to worry about."
Delilah stood up to take the baby upstairs to sleep for the night.
"Well...that is a real shame. David's father and I worked alongside people of all sorts to help get this town going. I think he would be disappointed to know this was happening, if he were alive."

    9LmsJzL.jpg

David left the City Hall, frustrated that his concerns weren't important to them. They insisted there was nothing else they could do. What suddenly made them stop caring about the town's safety and it's people?

    hADySzG.jpg

He saw someone familiar and walked over to say hello.
"Mr. Lehman, how have you been!"
Mr. Lehman shook David's hand, pleased to see him.
"Hello David! Wow I haven't seen you since you were about as tall as my knees son! It's a real shame what happened to your father. I'm sorry for your loss."
"We are getting through day by day. Listen, have you heard about the Klan's presence here? Have they bothered you at all?"

    oZsII7I.jpg

"Yea I heard they moved in. I was told there was about twelve families, but they didn't all come in at once. They've been handing out fliers door to door, talkin about picnics and meetings, and they are holding a derby race sometime next week. It's not just about skin color though, from what I heard they aren't inviting known Catholics or Jews to their events either. I know they are here to stay, I just hope it doesn't get bigger, you know?"
"I understand. Hey, thank you for letting me know, for some reason this is news to me."
"No problem kid. I better be making my way home. You have a good night David."

    Wc4GDbF.jpg

"Hi sweetheart, still up so late?"
Virginia was playing some soft tunes on the piano while waiting for David to get home.
"Of course baby! How did it go?"
"Not as well as I would have hoped. Something seems off. Listen I'm going to grab a drink from the cabinet and then we will head to bed alright?"

    0tva0dd.jpg

David felt the pressure mounting, and wasn't sure if he could effectively deal with the problems that were piling up.
He was already suffering from staff shortages because of the Immigration act preventing more people from coming to the country, as well as people leaving smaller towns to find work in large and thriving cities. Now the few workers he did have, didn't even want to risk coming to work. He wondered if his father ever had to deal with problems on this scale.
