His Majesty's Hospital Ship (H.M.H.S.) BRITANNIC - in hospital ship colours. She would never get the chance to carry a paying passenger.
Following the Titanic's sinking, White Star recalled the Olympic from service and halted Britannic's construction. The Olympic was given a complete over-haul of the safety systems - anything/everything that might have contributed to Titanic's sinking was replaced or repaired. Since Britannic was still in early stages of construction, it was an easy task. The Olympic was out of service for six months due to these renovations.
The Britannic completed five successful round-trips between the Middle Eastern theater and Belfast, before sinking on her sixth out-bound voyage. If Britannic sank inbound with her load of 3,000 wounded soldiers, the tragedy would've surpassed the Titanic. Thankfully, all but 30 would survive. Those lost were due to lifeboats being lowered without the captain's orders. The captain, unaware the lifeboats were being launched, attempted to beach Britannic on the Greek island Kea. Britannic's propellers broke the surface and caused a whirlpool that drew in two of the lifeboats. Only after the lifeboat incident is the captain told about Britannic being evacuated and orders the engines shut down.
Britannic sank in 400 feet (120 meters) and impacted with the seafloor before being fully submerged. Other than having the bow nearly torn off, this is an intact (virtually identical) version of Titanic. Exactly why Britannic sank so quickly hasn't been understood - 55 minutes! Despite all the safety upgrades, Britannic sank faster than Titanic. Why remains a mystery...
