Game performance is doubled whenever Mac UI appears....

I have a Retina MBP, 2.6 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB.
For some reason, whenever the UI of my Mac is present, the framerate of the game increases dramatically. For example, if I'm playing in fullscreen mode and I increase the volume of my computer, the volume increasing image that fades in over the game nearly doubles the FPS. Whenever I drag my mouse to the top and the top bar appears over the game, the same thing happens. I want to know why playing the game in fullscreen mode gives me about 20 FPS and then suddenly if any of the Mac UI appears, it's around 45 FPS.
It's annoying because I feel like the game could run MUCH better on my computer if it weren't for this fullscreen issue.
