Must have mods..

«1
As I'm beginning to learn about mods, my question for all of you is what are you must have mods that you cannot live without? I'm finding Nnraas story progression and errortrap are two popular ones.

For me, the following NRaas mods:

Saver - has saved my game on a number of occasions, but mainly just limits lost playing time due to the occasional crash
Relativity - I don't think I can play at all without this anymore
    Overwatch
    ErrorTrap
    MasterController+Cheats+Integration
    Traveler
Tempest (to stop freezing in Spring & Fall, plant indoors and on community lots)
Consigner (my sims tend to consign a lot)
Portrait Panel and Mover - mainly because I tend to play overstuffed households
    Careers+Academics+Schools
    StoryProgression+Extra+Career+Population+Relationship
The one we can't talk about, mainly to allow my same sex couples to try for baby.

There are other NRaas mods I use, but those are my "must have."

    Others from modthesims:

Buzzler's Box of Seeds (my sims always tend to garden)
Treeag: Storage Box (to satisfy my organizational OCD), Store in Fridge
icarusallsorts: bartending mod and serve meals mod
Mix Many Elixirs (my sim would never achieve the Excellent Elixirs challenge without this mod)
Interaction Queue Fits 30 (for gathering, mainly. There are shorter versions.)
No zombies, no IF's, no lunacy
    Add Any Lot Size

    From simsasylum:

    No attraction calls/gifts
    23 hour bars and clubs
No wishes to form groups, jam with other sims, or pillow fight
    24 hr classes
    Meals anytime
no autonomous clean up nectar/bar drinks
    No curfew period
Toddlers (and infants too, I think) sleep with no social decay

I've also started dabbling in making my own tuning mods. I could probably live without those, but it's nice to make some small changes here and there to better fit my play style.

I have other mods too, but most of those aren't really "must have."

A lot of NRaas' mods to make games playable, i.e. MC, SP, OW, Traveler (If no mod, the Adventure Board is useless), Relativity (slows time), Desensor along with cmar's wonderful anatomical mods because I'm not an impressionable child (lol), probably any mods by the talented icariusallsorts, plasticbox, Inge Jones, dougviega, pralinesims, (nope, sorry that's cc), um I think that's about it, I have probably left some out that I can't remember right now. All mods I put in my game are thought over very carefully. If I need them for my game, I get them, otherwise I skip the, what I call "goofy" mods that adds, well, goofiness, lol.

I hope all this made sense...bb (before breakfast). :#

NRaas Overwatch has a setting to stop the full moon glow. I only discovered that recently.

@TreyNutz Wow, thanks for sharing all that are important to you! I'm starting to see there are a lot out there that not only help bugs but make game play better.

@LaBlue0314 I do not have the Supernatural expansion pack to need some of the mods you have listed. HOWEVER, if I get that pack, I might need some of those. Thank you for sharing!

@bshag4lv I feel like I will be using mods that will only help make my game play better instead of using the mods that add some different but funny things to game play. Every one is different so that really depends on how you play your game! Thank you for sharing yours with us!

For me, the main mods I absolutely could not live without are Overwatch, ErrorTrap and Traveler.
I actually like EA's story progression already included in the game so I really don't want or need Master Controller or Story Progression :)

Just FYI, I understand not everyone wants or needs MasterController. But having it installed does nothing to or for your gameplay at all unless you count its optional CAS replacement. MC provides menus of commands for players to select on sims, objects, lots, and the town. Then it sits back and waits for one of them to be used.

StoryProgression is, of course, another matter entirely. :)

I've got 88 NRaas Mod files including all of the story progression and the extras,Master Controller,Overwatch,ErrorTrap,HomeOpener(for home inspections)Selector(for switching families)Retuner,Traveler, and many more.
I've also got a large number of Mods from MTS and Simlogical installed and that's a heavy load of Mods to fix some major issues I had with the game.I wouldn't advise trying to play Mod-free at all unless you want to have a horrifying unplayable nightmare or a massive glitched out bug-fest trying to manage your town instead of a working version of story progression.

@Simasaurus09 Is it a hassle to install and uninstall mods when you need them? Just learning about them so trying to get a feel for how they are and which are good to use! Thanks for sharing your favs!

@TadOlson In all the years I've played the sims, I have never used mods! I just didn't know much about them. But that is changing! Thanks for your input.

Generally installing and uninstalling mods is very easy. You just move the package file into (install), or out of (uninstall) of your Mods/Packages folder which you get from installing the mod framework. With the game not running, of course. It's pretty rare for a mod to require more, and if it does the creator will spell out what is needed.

I try out mods all the time. Some I keep, some I later take out. Others I find I don't need anymore.

I'd like to add once you remove any mods and even CC, clear cache.

Oh, yeah, @Simasaurus09 is right. After making any changes to my mod set up, I always delete the scriptCache.package file. I don't think it's necessary to do the others when installing, uninstalling, or updating mods.

I use most of the Nraas mods and couldn't live without most of them.

Also a good lighting mod makes the game so much prettier. Most people recommend Brnt Waffles.

I never used mods at all up until a year or so ago and I really wish I had. It totally changes the game and they can fix so many issues. And as other people have said, if you don't like it, it's extremely easy to get rid of.

If you remove any defaults it is important. I've had default skin blend together making this really glitchy mess because I didn't clear cache.

Probably just portrait panel and maybe woohoer. I only have the basic sims 3 game and high end loft stuff. So I can't much else.

If I remove CC, I'll clear the others but for changing mods I only delete the scriptCache.

I have only used one default and haven't tried any others. Good to know.

I found NRAAS made some very good mods. My favorties are OVERWATCH and ERRORTRAP. Those are the only 2 i ever use. There great and i love them. I don't really like using mods, but i had to make an exception because i had so many errors with sims 3.
A sims 4 player, but i mostly play on steam. I do not own sims 4 on steam, but thru origin. I play on few occasions sims 4.

A little Friday necromancy, because I have been mod-resistant for ages. Then I got "The Mod That Dare Not Speak Its Name" specifically because it allowed same-sex pregnancy / genetic offspring for gay couples. And for a long while, that was pretty much it.

But because it offers a more robust "Reset Sim" function that allowed me to actually have a CAS change work on a Sim where the base-game wouldn't (changing the style of a Fairy's wings), I have finally buckled under and installed Master Controller.

Still finding my way around all the features, but wow! it can do a lot of things I have wished I could do for a while! So another shout-out to Nraas for quality mods, and an invitation to @igazor to come say "I told you so". ;) Seriously - having you so active here in the Sims 3 board has cured me of a lot of my mod anxiety, so thanks.
  • igazorigazor Posts: 19,330 Member
@Sindocat - Not so much "I told you so," but more like, "Well, for the love of sim it's about freakin' time we won you over on that one." I'll be sure to mention this at the next staff meeting. ;)

After reading the whole topic, only one thing runs through my brain; "-Must have new computer. A big one."
    :(

(Oh, lords. I have to really go through my screenies, to make sure, REALLY sure, that they are in 'order' to print. -This game can make Hugh Hefner a shy boy again).

Almost got a tiny warning once. I happened to [Edit] a [Edit] to [Edit] an [Edit] with an [Edit]. I must have broken eight rules or something... It was thankfully quickly observed and a honourable moderator moderated it wildly away. -And no. Nudity weren't even included... :o

I have quite a few mods (but nowhere near as many as some simmers) but the ones I find most useful are mostly NRass mods:

    Can't live without

Overwatch - fixes many glitches. Very useful in making Bridgeport playable because it removes the excessively generated cars.
MasterController and most of its add-ons - can be used to fix problems or find out info about any sim.
    N___ can't be mentioned

    Won't play without

Tagger - allows you to identify sims in town from map view relative to the active sim. So you can see all their friends by the orange tags, their romantic interests and partners by the pink-magenta tags, bosses by the purple tags, acquaintances by the yellow tags, sims they don't know by white tags, household members by the green tags. Placing the cursor over a tag you can see info about that sim, depending on how you set it up, such as their sexual orientation, if they are in a relationship, what they are doing, how they feel, etc.
Register - can manage service sims and wildlife and paparazzi, school mascots, etc
Tempest - can configure the weather for each game
Relativity - I only set one thing "set speed" to 25 so that time runs slightly slower but the animations take the same amount of time. So if normally taking a shower takes 1 hour of sim time with my setting it takes 40 sim minutes. So sims can do more things in a day. When sims are woken up 2 hours before going to work they can get a bit more done in those 2 hours.
    W__H____ and its add-ons - can't be mentioned
    D_______ - can't be mentioned

Could play without but don't want to

StoryProgression and some of its add-ons - can have more control over what happens in the non-active households in town.
Traveler - fixes glitches when traveling, also sims can travel to other not WA worlds.

I have some non-NRaas mods that I won't play without but won't mention them here. One in particular can't be mentioned.

Don't mind me, I'm a little slow on the uptake... When I figure out how to install mods, I'll probably pick up NRAAS Master Controller and the other mods NRAAS Studios has...

But unfortunately, I'm a visual learner so I need to have it pointed out step by step visually on how to install them. Or I might just cark up my game.

    Visually, step by step:
    http://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Installing_Sims_3_Package_Files/Setup_and_Files

(nothing to do with NRaas mods directly, this is for the setting up of the Framework to accept package based files of any kind...)
