Large black square on Willow Creek loading screen

«1
Please suggest solutions for removing a large black square that appeared last week on my Willow Creek loading screen. There are no mods. Graphic quality is set at 'Ultra.' Game version is 1.0.797.20

I do not have enough forum points to be able to post the image, nor the link to the image on Photobucket.

Thank you.

Open Origin, rightclick on The Sims 4, choose Repair.

If that fails, please delete game cache:

    JoxerTM22,

    Thank you for your assistance.

Repairing the game via Origin did not resolve the problem.

Removing the following cache files (all that were available) did not resolve the problem:

    localthumbcache.package
    cachestr > spotlight.package
    cache > temp309533283.js.cache

    ~

The black square is covering two houses and portions of third, fourth and fifth houses. The bubbles for the first two houses have been repositioned above the black square. The bubbles for the third, fourth and fifth houses are missing.

It is interesting that I can still click through the black square to activate all houses that are covered.

The third house also had a problem in which water puddles that were left over from watering the garden would not go away over time, and could not be deleted nor mopped up. The only way to remove the water puddles was to pull the exterior wall of the house over the puddles. When I pushed the wall back, the puddles were gone.

Try rebuilding the whole game file. See my sig link about restoring factory settings without losing your content.

Also, do you have any mods or CC?

Have you tried lowering the graphics settings?

Sounds like your running your graphic card on to high a setting. This is one of the things that was mentioned in in the Sims 3 forums.

    luthienrising,

The following mods were removed as patch 1.0.797.20 started downloading:

    FogityMenuEnabler_v1.1
    MTS_plasticbox_1460655_pbox_strawberrycake
    MTS_scumbumbo_1468537_NoLeftoverParts-JustTrash

No mods have been placed back into the game after patch 1.0.797.20. The black square appeared a couple of game play days after patch 1.0.797.20 was installed.

    luthienrising,

Thank you! I followed the link in your sig for restoring factory settings. The black square is gone.

Next, I followed the instructions for reloading the 'Tray' file folder. This restored the 'My Library' portion of the Gallery. I am now resettling my Sims back into their homes.

one thing I did notice in your dxdiag is this:
    Drive: C:
    Free Space: 83.4 GB
    Total Space: 228.8 GB
    File System: NTFS
    Model: MKNSSDCR240GB
You are running low on space and this is your only drive.
I realise you have solved your problem but you might want to look into the space issue.

    Jessa_Dakkar & Sid1701D9,

I still have to consider what may have caused the black square to appear, such as which subsection within graphic quality is too high. Thank you both for bringing the consideration of the graphic settings to my attention.

    chesterbigbird,

What space solutions do you suggest?

    Edit:

Drive: C: is used mainly for running programs. Images, songs and etc are stored on thumb drives.

Not so much the graphics are too high.. as your card is a very good graphics card, but maybe your fps might be to high.
Do you have vsync enabled in Nvidia Control panel? and in game?

Well you have a 250GB ssd as your only drive.. I suggest you get a secondary HDD for games and other applications.
Usually people will have a SSD for windows and a few applications and have a larger HDD for other stuff.
250GB is not enough for space these days. And you only have 83GB left.

I would have to say I agree with chesterbigbirde in your hard drive space especially if it is the boot drive with windows installed in it. It is really small normal size is 1TB to 2 TB.

Hard drives are relatively cheap so I would suggest adding another one. 1tb would be a good idea, thumb drives are good for backing up ect, but I wouldn't use them as a substitude. And with only 80gb left your not going to be able to install many more games on your pc.

Thank you everyone for the unanimous vote that I should increase my hard drive space. I will comply with your suggestions. Please suggest make and models of 1-2TB SSD hard drives that are very reliable. What web sites offers independent comparison?

Over the years when hard drives died, I would loose all data that was not backed up onto thumb drives. This experience has conditioned me to think that thumb drives are more reliable for long term file storage. That is why I now use thumb drives for back ups and for file storage.

I have about seven games on my hard drive, but I usually play only two of them. I guess that I am not someone who needs more hard drive space for additional games that I will rarely play.

    chesterbigbird,

I will have to learn about vsync and about the preferred frames per second (fps) per application. Please suggest books and web sites that I should read.

    chesterbigbird,

I did not consider a second hard drive because I do not know the rules that determine what types of programs can go on the second hard drive, and what types of programs must always be installed on the drive that has the Windows operating system.

Ok first off, lol your not going to get a 1 or 2 tb ssd.. it will be a hdd. A normal hard drive. I just have a Seagate 7200rpm hdd.
You can install whatever you want where ever you want.. but for the ssd it's usually just Windows and maybe 1 or 2 games and smaller apps.. depending on the size of your ssd. For the hdd you can install whatever you want.. just remember to keep checking how much space you have left.
Vsync.. just caps your fps (frames per second) to that of your monitors refresh rate which is usually 60 or 120.
Anything over that can stress out your graphics card. You can enable this in nvidia control panel. Google if your unsure how.

About the free space 'issue'. It is recommended to keep at least 30% of your SSD as free space, for performance reasons, which would be about 70 GB in your case, so make sure you don't go below that. So, as others have already pointed out, it might be worth looking into adding an extra drive to your computer for additional content storage.

Correct. However, there is also a vsync setting in The Sims 4 itself - using that though would require the vsync setting in the nvidia control panel to be set to 'application controlled'.

Yeah.. it's best just to make a ts4 profile in NVidia and set it that way.
