Help me, @chesterbigbird!

«1
Hopefully, you see this post :)

You and I talked on another thread about my getting a new computer, and I decided to wait until the Black Friday/pre-Christmas sales. However, my game is quickly going down the tubes, and I wanted your advice on whether or not it is my computer or if something else is going on.

My game is crashing CONSTANTLY. At this point, I can't really save or travel without a crash. When I first installed the game, I was playing at High settings, no issues, but I lowered them to Medium when my crashes started (after the October patch). This kept my crashing situation at bay for awhile (I could play for a few hours, no problems). Now, though, it's just pointless to even try. I've been trying to play since this morning (it's now almost 4 PM), and I've progressed ONE SIM DAY. I have repaired the game, deleted the Sims 4 folder, rolled back saves...pretty much everything except uninstall/re-install.

I know my computer is older, but this feels ridiculous to me. I played TS3 with all expansions/stuff packs (minus that awful Katy Perry ;) ) with very few issues. Surely, this should take up fewer resources, right?

Is it my computer, or is something up with the game? I am looking into a small home loan for some improvements to my house (built-in bookshelves here I come!), so I don't want to charge a new computer to my credit card and take a hit on my credit score just--if at all possible, I want to wait until next month. Are there any other fixes/ideas I should try? I love this game, but this is driving me crazy.

OK.. so the biggest road bump is going to be the ram.
So what I would try first is to end every unneeded background task that is running.
Also try performing a clean boot :
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Is the crashing happening on a new save or one that you have played for a while?

It's one I've played for awhile, but there's not much to it. I've been piddling around with just two generations (because I'm patiently waiting for a family tree ;) )
  • chesterbigbirdchesterbigbird Posts: 8,581 Member
when you play the game open task manager and have a look to see how much available ram you have.. if it's a larger save file you could be running out of ram... other than ending background tasks there is not much to do.. if it's ram related.
    Also try a new game.

I'll do that, thank you. I've already shut the computer down for tonight, but I'll look at that aspect tomorrow.

I just don't get how all the TS3 games ran and this base game can't. Also, if it means starting a new game, I'll just wait until I can get a new computer. The whole fun it it for me is in playing the families throughout multiple generations. It won't be any fun to just progress through a couple and then have to start over.

I know it's frustrating.. I consider myself lucky I haven't had any issues playing the game at all.
It's sucks that you have a good graphics card but your ram and cpu are lacking a little.
I cannot pin point what else could be causing the issues.. I would suggest the folder reset but you have already done that.. so that rules out bad cc or mods.
You can do the uninstall and reinstall.. backing up your saves first. But I cannot guarantee that's going to help.
See how you go with the clean boot ;)

hey @kathrynmarien i agree about ram but i also think its possible your card is too powerful for your processor, this bottlenecking maybe reduced if you lower your in game resolution this is your native mode:

    Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (75Hz)

select lower and see if this helps. also i noticed you didnt post storage section so does your hard drive have enough free space?

and though the crashing is probably hardware related wondering if you confirmed yet it isnt your game, you could try a reset to check. simply pull the sims 4 folder to the desktop run a test game, even make a back up of your saved game and run within the new files

    path my documents/electronic arts/sims 4

I've lowered the resolution since posting the dxdiag, but no luck :( I've also run test games with a refreshed folder. I can play brand new saves, but the game I've been playing for awhile crashes when I try to save. I've rolled back saves, used older saves (because I choose "save as" a lot), but the crash continues. I'm playing TS3 for now.

Edit: forgot to mention, I do have plenty of space. I think I have 100ish GB of free space.

ok, if its just the one game perhaps its best to just save the family and home to gallery and try a new game.
  • kathrynmarienkathrynmarien Posts: 239 Member
I've been thinking of trying that. There are four families in that game, and I hate to lose the progress, but that's my next option to try.

    That looks good.
The ssd is rather small though.. I think you need to increase that to 120GB.
Do you play any other games? higher demanding than the sims?

No, just Sims. I'm not a gamer at all other than this one (and the other Sims games). I'm sort on confused on the SSD thing. The only SSD option was the 64, but if I go to the secondary hard drive section I can find other (larger) options. They're kind of expensive though

I've always used the Nvidia cards, so I prefer them. But I honestly don't know if one is any better than another. I saw this on the configuration, too: would this hard drive thing be better: 128GB ADATA SP610 SSD + 1TB 7200RPM HARD DRIVE

Ok what I did was changed to the amd R9 280 and you get free upgrade to 280x.. this is a faster card than the NVidia.
And I also added the intel 530 series 120GB ssd as the main drive. And the 1TB as the other drive.

I have a 1 TB external hard drive--do you think I could make due with 500 GB hard drive in the computer? It's only $14 less, so not a huge difference, but I'm cutting off whatever costs I can :)
